AIBU to think that the Nextdoor app is the worst of social media?

Recent post on Next door by a prolific poster. There are many others that post quite extreme views. This post seems rather innocent by comparison, but my reply was not allowed as it failed 'kindness'

Here's the original post and my reply (and I accept that it is a nostalgic view of the 60s, 70s and 80s) However, those times were also horrendous in many ways, and that is what my reply was about.

i thought it was a great idea. Bit no everyone uses it like facebook, i keep it if i need local trades etc but it’s another social media bin fire.

I'm the same. Good for trade recommendations. Other than that my area seems to be dominated by bored pensioners using it as a geriatric version of Facebook.

bombastix · 12/08/2024 22:20

Also a Nextdoor deleter. I got a bit fed up of the endless “don’t build any houses or flats” vibe and subtle racism. Just before the riots it became unsubtle racist (sleepy lions, blond haired kids). Not for me.

These days, I believe Facebook is the geriatric version of Facebook.

Local message boards are the equivalent of a pub carpark at closing time: everyone’s randomly shouting, at least two people are arguing, someone’s lost their belongings, and no-one will remember what happened tomorrow.

RunningThroughMyHead · 12/08/2024 22:25

I think you turned a pretty innocent, light hearted post into something pretty intense to be honest.

Of course you're not wrong in acknowledging there is good and bad in any time period but you didn't need to piss on their parade.

I'd massively roll my eyes at your post.

PickAChew · 12/08/2024 22:27

The post was tedious. You were unnecessarily snippy.

I'm a local lead and the whole moderation mechanism is just plain broken, anyhow.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 12/08/2024 22:33

A bit of a mean reaction to a list of things thst are largely still around today! Doctor Who, selection boxes and Christmas crackers. Hardly memories of a bygone age- more like memories of 6 months ago!

brainexplorer · 12/08/2024 22:33

OP, I think you're getting different response from people interpreting the first post very differently. A nostalgic look at childhood is fine, but it often seems to be tainted with a vibe of "that era was better" rather than recognising that it's always nicer to be an oblivious kid. Doesn't matter when you were born.

I have an aunt who always falls for this tripe and thinks it's evidence of a bygone utopia when all it really proves is that being 7 is generally more fun than being 65. I get why you felt the need to rebut it because Next Door is full of this crap, but you can just delete it rather than retaliate.

Next Door has been long gone on my phone, but sometimes my mum sends me things from it via WhatsApp (will I never escape boomers desperate to drink out of hoses?? I should hook one up to her kitchen tap for her for Christmas).

SootysCaravan · 12/08/2024 22:35

Nothing quite like some lighthearted reading before bed, hey!

FatmanandKnobbin · 12/08/2024 22:39

The first post required an eye roll and move on, not that reply. No wonder they banned it.

I'm signed up to next door, but rarely go on, my area is OK, the worst we get it a bit of a moan about boy racers.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 12/08/2024 22:42

I thought it would be a handy app for finding out what's going on in our village, but no-one ever seems to tick the box to just post in their village/town so I get loads of notifications about stuff happening miles away, which really pisses me off.

SnobblyBobbly · 12/08/2024 22:56

Oh I had to turn it off. Moansville.

All the people that 'don't do Facebook' like they're too good for it but they just spam Nextdoor with trivial shite - not even any memes to break it up.

I also dislike X/Twitter. I had to use it for work reasons so had to follow certain people and my opinion on it is probably skewed, but it seemed full of smug Katie Holmes wannabes trying to be sarcastically clever but it just comes off as mean and a bit sad.

SwedishEdith · 12/08/2024 22:58

Just read the "poem" properly and I don't think 'Give us a clue' fits the era of the other tv programmes or magazines properly. 🤔

I did used to love the second post though. Difficult to justify when no one posts as much stuff anymore.

Marseillaise · 12/08/2024 22:58

Ours is full of indignant posts addressed to people posters perceive have done them wrong in some way. The chances that the wrongdoer will actually see their posts is virtually nil, I always want to ask them why they bother.

You killed a fly with a sledgehammer a bit but I do agree with you.

SD1978 · 12/08/2024 23:55

I hate that faux the 60's 70's &80's were an idyllic time shit as well- and to be honest I would have applauded your reply post, as there were multiple issues- like there is in all decades! Probably would have juts rolled my eyes and moved on like I do every time that overly sentimental shite is pulled out by someone.

imtryingtoleave · 13/08/2024 01:34

oh lord mine for the last couple of weeks has been constant pensioners moaning about the loss of the winter fuel allowance, took a look at one moaning individual profile and what a surprise he is making posts about his new 25k kitchen and 15k bathroom

its deffo right wing torys always moaning about anybody under 50 and like to tell everybody how bloody hard they have worked

Inlaw · 13/08/2024 01:43

I was actually smiling reading the first one thinking aww yes the toasting sticks!

And I’m a 90s baby who just happened to have such a stick.

Then I read the OP. 🫥

Galoop · 13/08/2024 01:57

You seem like a bit of a dick with that reply

MeAgainAndAgain · 13/08/2024 02:02

I had an invitation to join once but didn’t bother. Who is it for? Is it just people in your road who can post on yours? Do you know who everyone is, do they have to identify themselves by their address? What’s the point of it? How is it different from the postcode Facebook groups?

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 13/08/2024 02:14

Next Door is like a suped up version of local FB pages

That poem does the rounds on FB every now and then and fills people with nostalgia. Your reply was a bit twatty.

A "it's good to think of the fun we had when there was so much awful stuff going on" if you felt you needed to but your reply was too much

Codlingmoths · 13/08/2024 02:17

Do you ever let anyone be happy op?
