To book a 6 person lodge for myself?

One of my favourite things to do since escaping my controlling ex is to get away by myself for a couple of nights, somewhere remote with a good view, a hot tub, where I can just relax and recharge.

I've found a lovely site that has a few 2 person glamping pods, and 2 self-catering cottages. One cottage sleeps 4, the other sleeps 6. I dithered over both of them but decided to go for the 6 person lodge as it has nicer facilities, bigger kitchen, nicer views, and an enclosed garden for if I decide to bring my dog with me.

I've just received an email from the company asking me to clarify it's just for me. I've said yes. They've come back and said it's a busy time of year for them (October), so would I like to have one of the glamping pods instead as the cottages are really for bigger parties only.

I've had another look on their website and can see now it says they charge a fixed rate for 2 people, and for each additional person it's an extra £50 per person, per night! So they're obviously thinking they can make more money out of a bigger party rather than just me on my own.

I haven't specified this to them yet but I was planning on paying extra for early check in (£30), bringing the dog (£25), and a bottle of fizzy on arrival (£40). So it's not like they won't be getting their moneys worth out of me.

AIBU to book the larger property just for me?

Oh, I’ve just seen your update about there being no n site facilities. In that case, they are definitely trying it on.

You could feel alone. I travelled the world on business and when the only room available in a hotel was a family room, I found myself in a room with bunk beds and single beds. It was when the children were young and that is the only time I really felt bad and missed them.
I was glad to leave the next day.

Oldtigernidster · 13/08/2024 18:10

Go for it and have a wonderful holiday with your dog.

Sorrypinkfish · 13/08/2024 18:12

Go for it and enjoy yourself! I recently booked a lodge for myself for a weekend that actually slept 4, it was bliss!

LightSpeeds · 13/08/2024 18:16

Book it and I'll come with you 😀

LemonPlayer · 13/08/2024 18:18

Certainly Not! We’ve booked places for four before and been very cramped and uncomfortable (2 of us). As long as it’s in your budget go for it, and enjoy without guilt.

Trinity65 · 13/08/2024 18:22

If you can afford it, then why not ?

YANBU in my opinion

Newgirls · 13/08/2024 18:23

Surely you are a dream customer. Fewer beds to change and easier to clean after, less noise etc

Btb · 13/08/2024 18:26

If that’s what you want then you stay in it life’s too short the company should state 1 person cannot rent them if they are unhappy , so it’s tough luck to them id insist I wanted the one I’ve booked will not take another

HesterRoon · 13/08/2024 18:34

There are 2 of us and we often book 3 bedroom places. There is often a discount for 2 as they only use one set of bed linen and you normally can only use one bedroom. We tend to pay full price because we each like our own space and sleep wherever we want. So I think having a big lodge would be great and far nicer than a glamppod!

I totally see where they are coming from, theyd rather have money for 6 people than for 1 (or 2 if you pay a fixed rate). It's kind of cheeky to pay for one person and expect a place for 6 and to expect the owners to take a hit in the busiest season.

Do you think then that they would be reasonable to cancel this if only two people booked?
It's a two bed cottage, I am sure quite often they would have 2-4 people.

Mandaxx25 · 13/08/2024 18:44

Absolutely not unreasonable. I'm sick of this crap actually. When renting a house instead of an hotel room, it should be a fixed rate for the property whether one person is staying or the max number of guests. You're renting the property regardless. I also find they ask for the ages of children staying so they can charge more too. It's really gotten out of hand. They're already asking an absolutely extortionate amount because it's a holiday let and not long term let. You'd think that would be greedy enough.

MilkyCappuchino · 13/08/2024 18:45

I would absolutely do it if you are affording it. I love doing solo things and always have, even now, more so, when married still enjoy it so much. I have always done crazy solo adventures. Not like jungles but genuinely love it

HauntedPencil · 13/08/2024 18:48

This would put me off booking with them the cheeky articles. Surely it's for the unit?

Sennelier1 · 13/08/2024 18:57

No, you are not unreasonable to want that large cottage all for yourself. It seems very nice and I like to have a lot of space too so I do understand.
But the owners are not unreasonable to want as much revenue as possible.

For them it would be a £200 difference per night, so the price for 2 and then 4 X £50.
Understandable they try to make you change your mind.

So I would say, do go ahead if they let you ❤️

Mandaxx25 · 13/08/2024 18:58

Terrible false equivalency. It's a 2 bedroom property. If you were going with a friend you'd both need a room each and she's paid for 2 people already. Throwing a sofa bed in the living room is not the same as renting 6 hotel rooms and paying for one.

MaryRoze · 12/08/2024 13:02

This cottage is in Scotland too Smile It also has a covered gazebo with a fire pit which was the selling point for me in October!!

This will be why they are emailing you!
Scottish October holidays is 2 weeks and is always before the English half term.
The Scottish Holidays also vary by council region with some starting as early as the 3rd and then others after.

Combine in the English half term the last week of October and you will find they have realised they have rented it out at a high demand time when they could fill it.

It's not your problem they accepted the booking but it might be why they emailed in the first place.

MissingMoominMamma · 13/08/2024 19:02

They aren’t really being cheeky. If it’s a busy time of year for them, their properties are better fully occupied.

It’s like one person hogging a 6 person table in a restaurant on a busy evening.

Leisure type businesses need to make hay whilst the sun shines, and tbh, if their season has been affected by the weather as many have, they may need to maximise the next few months.

Is there no enclosed space with any of the other properties?

Nadeed · 13/08/2024 19:02

Who would pay an extra £50 a night per person to sleep on a sofa bed? I doubt they get many groups of 6 booking.

1974devon · 13/08/2024 19:04

Totally fine :) I booked a 6 person accommodation for my son and I when we went on hols. As its nice to have the extra sitting room and kitchen space.
We were able to have a bedroom each. Another room for our stuff and I would do the same next time.

Nadeed · 13/08/2024 19:04

@MissingMoominMamma it is only similar if there is a higher minimum charge for a 6 person table than a 2 person table. OP is paying more for what is a 2 bedroom cottage than a 1 bedroom place. And glamping pods tend to be vile.

wooo69 · 13/08/2024 19:06

We regularly book 10 person lodge accommodation for 4 adults (2 couples), this is generally 2 doubles, 2 twin rooms and a sofa bed. Some nights we will all sleep in separate rooms. Accommodation has always been per unit not per person so they get the same money however many people stay.

Strangerthanfictions · 13/08/2024 19:07

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 12/08/2024 12:34

Yanbu

Just reply and say you chose that because it had the enclosed garden for your dog and you want space and comfort to relax rather than being in the rather cramped conditions of a glamping pod where you are standing right by your bed as you cook.

Your money is as good as the next person's. You've paid the advertised rate and it's not reasonable of them to shift the goalposts now. If they only want 6 person groups they should whack the cost up by £200 and get rid of the extra charge per-person but they can't do that retrospectively.

Agree, they should have a flat rate per property and then it's up to customers to make the choice if they want to spend it on one person or not. I suspect their policy will soon be changing

5128gap · 13/08/2024 19:24

If they honour your booking, go for it. They could easily cancel you and return your money if they wanted to. So if they're prepared to go ahead you can too.

JoustingWeevel · 13/08/2024 19:31

Just wonder if this is a Scottish thing as well. We got a big shock when booked a double hotel room in a Scottish sort of fishing lodge. The rate turned out to be per person not per room so when we checked out we paid twice as much as we expected to. Our fault for not checking but Scotland is the only place I have seen payment per person and not per room or unit.
