It's given as advice on here all the time but who has ever dialled 999 and was it for something major?

I've called for football fans fighting and letting off flares at cars, so genuine emergency.

OP posts:

When the partner of the ndn daughter was standing outside the property with a knife threatening to kill her.

The police claimed they'd been and all was quiet when I chased it up. They'd only gone to the wrong sodding house.

MissMarplesNiece · 11/08/2024 10:03

Dialled 999 when there was a fight in my road and I saw someone had a machete. Armed police were there in minutes.

Flamingo68 · 11/08/2024 10:03

Oh remembered another one, think husband made the call though. Fight outside with someone waving a big piece of wood about, which they hit someone else with. The Police arrived after that had calmed down.

wineandcheeseplease · 11/08/2024 10:04

Once when my car was smashed and my ex and I were attacked

Lemongingertea · 11/08/2024 10:04

Only called on one occasion, still plays in my mind years later.

Mother was hitting and punching her child in a public carpark as a disciplinary measure. Absolutely horrifying- that poor kid. Police however didn’t do much, only gave her a “warning” which would amount to higher charges if repeated. Still think about this child and really hope they’re okay now. It’s appalling how many incompetent parents there are.

Andthereitis · 11/08/2024 10:04

More times than I remember.
People breaking into shed at night.
Knife fight.
Car theft in progress.
Burglary in progress in flat above me.
Car accident (never got through though... I think this was during the GMP phone blip)

Princesspollyyy · 11/08/2024 10:04

I called 999 and asked for police once when I saw a major rta on the motorway. It was in my rear view mirror so it happened behind me.

Willmafrockfit · 11/08/2024 10:06

Howmanysleepsnow · 11/08/2024 10:06

When DS rang me in hysterics because someone pulled a knife on him.
To stop someone in the act of trying to take their own life.
in France, because people were banging on the inside of a refrigerated lorry and shouting for help.
A few assaults

mynewusername2023 · 11/08/2024 10:07

A man with blood on his clothes trying to get into the house at about 7.30am. My DH had already left for work and the man was clearly on something. The police came very quickly.

I've also called a couple of times to report debris in the motorway.

DimplesToadfoot · 11/08/2024 10:08

I was at work one night, 3 robbers came in with guns "where's the fucking money" I said "I don't know, not my department" they picked me up, carried me to another office and threw me across the room, breaking my legs and pelvis , I managed to get to a phone, rang 999, because it wasn't my work place I didn't know the phone number I was ringing from so the operator refused to put me through to the police. I don't remember anything after that.

The second time my ex was battering me, during a lull in the beatings I grabbed a phone rang 999, i managed to say i needed the police before my ex came back got the phone and smashed it up. A short while later I grabbed my mobile, rang 999 the same thing happened again. When my ex was done with me he left. I'm unconscious on the floor, my DS 11 at the time found me, he thought I was dead. He picked up the pieces of a phone put them together and rang 999 they refused to put him through to anyone, despite him saying "i think my mums dead" but they did send the police out to speak to me for wasting their time and making prank calls to 999.

Luckily I haven't had any other occasion but in an emergency now I don't think I would ring 999 I don't want to be arrested :-/

Miloandfreddy · 11/08/2024 10:08

Had to when my dad died. He had a massive bleed to the brain and was unresponsive.

Songlines · 11/08/2024 10:08

When I found an elderly neighbour dead in her garden

Expatfamily · 11/08/2024 10:09

Driving past a white van parked in a lay-by on a country road. A man had a woman pinned against the van and blood was pouring from her face the way she eyes stared into mine. We turned around and called the police. He dragged her into the van and was trying to loose us by kept changing direction.

The police stayed on the phone while we were following him - which I was surprised they were encouraging tbh. The rural team called us back as they were trying to find him (we long lost him) then they called back for a statement that lasted over an hour. We never heard another thing.

I think about her often. I hope we distracted him enough that he stopped taking his anger out on her. I hope she got away. I hope she went to the police and he’s behind bars.

Blink282 · 11/08/2024 10:10

3 times when people being assaulted on the street

Once for a burglary in progress

Twice for car accidents

And two calls to the fire brigade for fires.

None of them involving me, and that’s over a 30 year span.

TyrannasaurusJex · 11/08/2024 10:11

Called 999 on the M40 late at night when the car in front of us was veering all over the lanes. Got straight through. They advised us to continue to follow at a safe distance and a police car was with us within 5 mins and pulled him over safely. Was very satisfying all round.

Willmafrockfit · 11/08/2024 10:11

have called the fire brigade twice, one for a fire i started, a bonfire in the garden, which set alight the neighbours newly creosoted fence, very nice firemen!
ambulance for dd friend who i unwittingly fed peanut butter to when she was allergic

Allthehorsesintheworld · 11/08/2024 10:12

DD not home at 2 am ( pre mobile days, new driver in my car)
Car parked up with 4 people in it along our farm track. Gave registration and police said it came up as a tractor in Essex ( nowhere near Essex)
Road accident.
Glass left all over the road after a minor car accident.

Carebearsonmybed · 11/08/2024 10:12

You don't phone 999 'for the police' that's the emergency number.

To report crimes etc it's 101.

Dweetfidilove · 11/08/2024 10:12

When my neighbour and her partner went from arguing to furniture (?) crashing...

Lastyoungrenegade · 11/08/2024 10:13

I had only ever called the police once before in my life when a random man was threatening my dad with a knife when I was 11 years old (dad was stabbed, had his wallet stolen, but stab wound wasn't deep and he was fine thankfully).

But then in March this year, new neighbours moved in and I've called police for drug dealing, dad hitting the children, verbal abuse from both mum and dad towards the children, excessive arguing and fighting, threatening behaviour, dad smashing up the garden and trying to smash windows. Last weekend I called because mum sent me a message asking me to call the police, he was hitting her and threatening to kill her/the children/the pets. I called again when I could hear the oldest child the next morning shouting for help. Dad had been arrested the night before, mum had overdosed and the kids couldn't wake her up. They have had 4 older children removed from their care but the 4 younger children remain. Dad has been arrested lots but still keeps coming back. Mum is clearly vulnerable but always takes him back and does her fair share of screaming abuse at the kids. It's a nightmare and we are thankfully moving in a few weeks! I worry what will happen to those poor children.

FourEyesGood · 11/08/2024 09:43

A few years ago I saw a man shouting aggressively at a woman in the street (persistently). I called the police because I was worried for her safety. They said they’d send someone. I wish I’d been brave enough to actually intervene, but I wasn’t.

I did try to intervene once; at least, I asked the bloke what he thought he was playing at. They both told me to piss off and mmob!

PollyannaWhittier · 11/08/2024 10:15

My friend and I did when we were walking home from work late one night and in the front room of a house we could see a man and a woman having an argument, every time she tried to stand up he grabbed her by the shoulder / neck and threw her back to the floor. She didn't fight back and was just crying. The police came, asked us a couple of questions, then rang the bell and went in to speak to them at which point we left.

Pigeonqueen · 11/08/2024 10:15

When a boy of about 7 was thrown out of his house in the middle of the night and was crying to be let back in. I was always worried about him and had previously made anonymous calls to the school and social services but that particular incident gave me a good reason to ring 999. When I was reporting it on the call the handler said they could hear how distressed he was in the background (despite being a good 20 or so houses down the road). The police were there in about 4 minutes and took him and his family away in their cars. I never saw any of them again and I just really hope he’s happier now somehow.
