Why am I like this?

For as long as I've known I just don't function properly. Day to day, at least one thing goes wrong. Mainly more than one thing. I'm clumsy, I flap easily. I knocked a colouring book off the shelve in Morrisons earlier and they all came flying down. Had to stand picking them all up. I make a coffee and spill milk. Always dropping things. I hurt myself a lot by accident. It's not bad balance or lack of grip or a medical thing I don't think. I'm just not put together. I see mums that appear really put together and composed and I'm just not and I don't think what's wrong with me.

Have you considered dyspraxia?

Look into this, OP. It's amazing how a little bit of knowledge about ourselves can increase self-compassion. It's clearly something out of your control, so be gentle with yourself.

Just as a side note, I become very clumsy when I'm due on.

Dyspraxia. I'm audhd and very likely have this. I'm forever falling over (I have two injured knees as we speak), banging into things, dropping things, walking into things and getting tangled up all the time. I always say I'm not strung together right. I'm also hyper mobile which adds to the fun. I have all the grace of a drunken warthog.

Thanks everyone, I will look into this.
@blossomismyfriend yes that's me too, always getting tangled up. I always bump my shoulder into things. I hurt my ankle on something the other day. I don't have very good spatial awareness

I’m like this too, always have been. I’m always getting my clothes, handbag (and occasionally hair) caught on things like door handles and having to disentangle myself. My dh is even worse. He smashes a dish/ cup at least once a week and is always tripping over his own feet. I think some people are just clumsy. I’m so prone to knocking stuff over in shops, I literally won’t go in anywhere with valuables like an antique store. Once in college I tripped over a bag and knocked a big freestanding coat rack over. All the coats, hats and scarves and stuff flew off and landed all over my tutor who was sitting at his desk 😳

Noseybookworm · 11/08/2024 00:19

Sounds like you could have dyspraxia. Maybe speak to your GP about an assessment?

thistlepiedpiper · 11/08/2024 00:26

I am like this and have adhd and dyspraxia. I'm extremely clumsy and a total scatter brain. On Friday while taking my phone out my pocket, it flipped out my hand landed in a pail of water at my back door. I can't correctly judge any doorframe - I'll always bump my right hip or my leg on a table that is avoidable for most people

I hope this helps you feel you're not so alone!! X

I have ADHD (inattentive) anc can be really clumsy so it could be that instead/ as well.

Also sounds silly but have you ever had an eye test? Could be that you're misjudging distances when going to pick be things up which could be a sign of a depth perception issue. These can be caused by your binocular vision (eye coordination ) being off. Maybe subtle strabismus or a convergence issue or some sight loss in one eye

SarahWren · 11/08/2024 11:29

I don’t know if it’s relevant but I’m waiting to be assessed for adhd.
I’ve always thought there must be something going on with me because there are so many things I am utterly crap at eg. as a kid I could never skip, cycle a bike with any confidence (lots of falling off), do anything involving a ball (throw it properly, catch it, hit it with a tennis racket or bat etc), I can’t dance whatsoever and my handwriting is so bad even I can’t read it sometimes and I’m always going through the page because I press too hard.
How are you with that sort of thing?

Madamecholetsbonnet · 11/08/2024 11:31

I’m dyspraxic and am exactly as you describe.

I can’t ride a bike and driving takes up gigantic amounts of concentration.
