To take my DS abroad with a hairline fracture ?

HairLineFracture · 10/08/2024 22:57

As the title suggests DS sustained a hairline fracture in his arm due to a sports injury today. No cast needed just an arm sling.

I’ve had a trip booked to Greece for over a year, it’s the first one all year and everyone is so looking forward to it, DS would be wrecked if we didn’t go.

Doctor said ok to travel but obviously activities limited whilst on holiday. DS atm is in a lot of pain which is to be expected so around the clock pain meds.

Would you go if you were in my position? I’ll be getting specific insurance based on the fact he’s had this injury but am I mad to even consider it?

if we do go, will I need any form of medical consent to fly?

Thanks

I’d go, make sure you take meds with you and lots of things to do for when he needs to sit around.

If he really can’t sit around, could you postpone?

We’ve just been on hols with DS17 with broken ankle in a fracture walker boot.

Used regular travel insurance company. The only time they are unlikely to cover would be if a break is pinned with pins exposed. I work in travel insurance.

Make sure it’s on DS his travel insurance and check with the airline if you want but they won’t stop him flying as he’s not a safety risk.

Ibfeactited my arm 3 weeks ago and got a sling. The pain can be really bad, even with pain medication. I'm sleeping upright on couch as I can't get up from lying flat. The last thing I would want to do would be to go on a plane

Catza · 10/08/2024 23:02

Your doctor cleared you to travel, this would be enough for me. You will need to disclose fracture to your insurance provider.
They are not going to stop you from flying at the airport, no need for medical clearance. It’s just an arm in a sling.

provemewrongthen · 10/08/2024 23:03

Broken wrist here. I'm abroad and it's been fine.

HairLineFracture · 10/08/2024 23:04

Thanks Pinky, postponing not an option unfortunately, would need to just cancel and would try and claim on insurance.

I am hopeful that by day 6 the pain might start subsiding but I’ve not got much experience in the fracture category so not really sure what to expect.

Bloody hell I thought you meant in his skull or something from the title, not his arm. If he’s been cleared by the doctor and wants to go, it would be a non issue for me

HairLineFracture · 10/08/2024 23:07

Thanks for all the perspectives. I’m riddled with anxiety and feel guilty at even thinking about going but he’s so keen to go, we’ve spoken about nothing else these last few months and he deserves a break and some sun.

I would plan to take lots of activities that would be suitable for him. Board games, colouring books, magazines, iPad etc as splashing inanely and going on the water slides is now out of the question .

I think it’s just as easy to rehab on holiday as it is at home. I’d do it.

Woww2 · 10/08/2024 23:13

My son had had quite a few fractures due to football. If he’s happy to go he’ll be fine - it can’t be too bad if he’s not been put in plaster. Kids also heal very quickly.

HairLineFracture · 11/08/2024 08:21

Thanks everyone, he had an ok night last night, I think as long as we take plenty of pain relief and keep a close watch on him he should be ok.

The only thing I'd be worried about is him getting much too hot. Obviously he won't be able to go in water slides but will the pool be okay for him to dip his legs into and cool them down? Also what pain meds has he got? I went on holiday with a relative who had broken their ankle and the hospital staff were trying to palm us off with ibuprofen and paracetamol which frankly was sorely inadequate. We got some codeine to add to the mix which made it just about manageable but I don't know how they feel about codeine for children.

steadywinner · 11/08/2024 08:29

Is there some kind of protective splint he could wear if he wants to go in the pool? It wouldn't concern me about going but would be a shame if he can't go in the pool at all.

3Ls · 11/08/2024 08:31

Double check rules on the painkillers you are taking. From memory codiene is a much more controlled drug there - possibly illegal? But it was a while ago I travelled with it and a greek friend told me (tooth problem)

FloofPaws · 11/08/2024 08:32

Torn ACL here, day before going to Egypt - it was fine

KezzaMucklowe · 11/08/2024 08:33

I eould definitely go.
My ds fractured his arm this year.

He wasn't in too much pain after a few days.
Tbh after a week we had to remind him not to play football on the playground at school and although he said he didn't I'm not sure that I believe him.
His pain and discomfort was really high in the first few days but improved really quickly.
How old is he ?

KindleAndCake · 11/08/2024 08:33

I was abroad last week, saw a few kids and adults with arms in velcro type slings or velcro boots. They just couldn't swim.
If your doc says fine, then go for it. Have a lovely holiday.

MammaMiaPizzeria · 11/08/2024 08:38

We took our then 3 year old abroad a couple of weeks after he fractured his wrist. No cast or anything, just a sling. He was fine. Hadn't even occurred to me we maybe shouldn't go 🙈 He wasn't in pain though, so I guess that's why I didn't overthink it. But point is, there were no issues travelling with a fracture. If doctor says it's fine I'd just go!

sleepyscientist · 11/08/2024 08:49

I would go, can you Amazon a splint or 2 so he can take the sling off to swim?

Puddypuds · 11/08/2024 08:55

My nephew fractured his collar bone a couple of weeks ago. Has a fit to fly note from the doctor and has been advised no idiotic jumping into the pool. Just be careful. Take pain meds with you. He'll be fine. Might even be a welcome distraction.

CosyDenimShark · 11/08/2024 09:10

My son fractured his collar bone 3 weeks before a holiday to Cyprus. He was absolutely fine. We got him a pool noodle so he could just float in the pool.
