To think that Twitter/X should have decent customer support?

I'm in my early 50s and have been on Twitter from a couple of years after it started. Not a massive account, mostly people I know as followers but also have a range of professional contacts etc on there so it's pretty useful.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a message out of the blue to enter my birth date. Thought it was a bit odd, didn't think too much of it. It had one of those wheels that you have to scroll back and it takes ages to get to the 70s, so I think I might have not bothered to do it all the way.

Then X contacted me to say that they'd locked my account, as I'm over 13 now but wasn't when my account was opened. This isn't the case as twitter wasn't even invented when I was 13, not even sure if the internet was!

The only option is to delete all my previous posts etc, which I don't want to do, or full out a form with my parent's details and my passport. I tried just filling it out with my passport, saying that it clearly shows I've never used Twitter as a child. No response. Then did it with my mum's email address. She's now had an email asking her to upload her own passport and my birth certificate. She's in her 70s, and just doesn't trust them enough to have this information and I don't blame her. And at my age it's ridiculous to involve her!

I've emailed support@twitter.com and just had a response to say my case is closed. If I raise a case about anything else it just says there's no problem (happens so quick it's an auto response so no one is actually reading what I'm putting in) and my case is closed. There seems to be no email or any other contact where I can actually get through to a person.

I can't believe they've seen my passport, know this is nonsense and won't correct it!

Can anyone help?

Id just start a new account, use the search to refind people who interacted with your account in the past. Most of the social media sites just largely auto customer service because it’s just not practical for a human to see it given the sheer amount of people on all of them, twitter now has even less because of Musks slashing large amounts of the workforce so I don’t see you getting it back/the case reopening sadly.

MarshmallowVeronica · 11/08/2024 09:15

Their customer service is basically non existent but why on earth didn’t you just put the correct birth date in?!

You've been banned. Start another account. It's a massive pain but they don't care.

It's also worth noting that if it's free, you are not the customer. You're the product

Are you sure this is actually Twitter / X? Asking for your passport details and parents details seems like a huge red flag to me. Seems like this might be some kind of scam.

SerendipityJane · 11/08/2024 10:32

If you don't really pay, are you really a customer ?

Mespher · 11/08/2024 10:41

I would just start another account, they probably ask for date of birth when you sign up now and tell your followers, bit like if you have to have a new phone no or email address

HappyLittleNarwhal · 11/08/2024 10:43

X did just do a big lockout of accounts with no dates of birth; I run a lot of X accounts for my clients and it was a massive pain in the arse.

It's become an unusable hellscape, I'd just not bother.

Unfortunately the volume of users is so great that it's isn't viable to have proper customer support.

The business model is revenue from advertisers, not subscribers as with most social media, so they don't "need" to keep you happy.
