AIBU to be confused by everything being "fair"?!

Examples:
Rachel: "I think i'll to go to the cinema to see it, to be fair".
Sarah: "Fair do's"
Fiona: "Fair play, it's supposed to be a good film".

Why is everything "to be fair"? I think I'll post on Mumsnet, to be fair

To be fair, to be honest, not gonna lie YANBU

Abitlosttoday · 10/08/2024 16:58

I find 'to be fair' used every third sentence very irritating.

I thought it was super, or big, or literally it happened.

To be fair / To be honest

Fair dos / I agree

Fair play / good for you.

Just curiosities of language.
Weird as they are, a lot of people understand what they mean.

Unlike me, whose never really got the whole 'turned around' thing.
Is everyone standing and having conversations with other people's backs?

"Amd I said, no way but she turned around and said that's not fair.."
Why did she turn around? Where was she looking? And if she was on the phone, why would she need to turn around? Are people holding conversations on Waltzers?

Fair enough, it's fair call you are fairly annoyed about people's use of fair. Best to avoid going to any fayres while the weather is fair, moreso if your friends are fair or worse still fair weather friends.

johann12 · 10/08/2024 17:11

I hate "fair play" it's just stupid. Nothing is being played

I think they mean it like "He faced me and said" "He looked me in the eye and said"

Fair comment, OP.

Obviously ‘fair-haired’ is fine. But it always makes me smile. It’s like saying that someone has even-handed, unbiased and civilised hair.

johann12 · 10/08/2024 17:17

I get annoyed with, I don't know how to word this, but like "We were at loggerheads over" "I powered through" "Your chickens will come home to roost" just anything that invents a similie type thing instead of just speaking plainly

Berlinlover · 10/08/2024 17:21

I always thought it was fair dues not fair dos.

@Spamcastanets emma who are you?

Woollypullover · 10/08/2024 17:26

My Bulgarian friend, who lives in Wiltshire, says "to be fair" all of the time. She told me that she'd (Bulgarian accent)"...like to go to IKEA in Bristol, to be fair".

It’s football twatspeak. “At the end of the day”, “fair play” and all that.
