Manager called security on me in Primark!

spanieleyes22 · 10/08/2024 15:08

So what happened is I bought 2 tops the same a couple of weeks ago in primark: one size large and one size xl. Paid on different receipts as I bought large then walking out I saw they had an xl so went back and bought that too.

Decided to keep xl.

Went to return large today. Presented receipt and top. Girl calls manager. She says that's the the receipt for that top: that's a receipt for an xl.

Explained that I had bought 2 tops and must have brought the wrong receipt with me.
I tried to argue and said look it's the same top same price please can you give me refund: nope nope nope.
She starts saying that they have cameras in the store. And then she calls security!! At that point I just left. I left the top and receipt there I was so scared. She thought I had picked up the top in store and tried to return it using an old receipt. I thought I was going to be arrested. So now I'm down 12 pound and don't have the top. Maybe I should have stayed and argued but I felt I couldn't prove I had bought it. Don't think I will be buying anything there for a very long time. I will be scared to show my face there. And I haven't done anything wrong! Very shaken by it

How did you not know it was the wrong receipt? The L one had other items on it. The XL one was the only item on it.

More holes than Swiss cheese...

Just because of the principle of the thing, I would go home find the other receipt, return to Primark and slap it on the counter.

“There’s the correct receipt. I want my money back and an apology.” All the while thinking in my head, “You bitch”. And, if she is not the manager, I would insist the manager come to the counter and apologize to me in person.

You sound like an absolute delight.

Huh? Assistant hasn't done anything wrong - they don't need to apologise.

They refused to refund because the receipt was not for the correct item. That will be store policy. OP argued with assistant even though they clearly had the wrong receipt. Assistant (rightly) called security for a customer situation that seemed like could get out of hand, e.g. customer arguing when they are clearly wrong.

You acted like you were guilty of theft…

Exactly. Why would you leave the top and receipt if you weren't guilty in theor eyes? Total over reaction

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2024 17:55

You should have stayed.

Got your bank up on your phone app and showed them the 2 transactions for the tops and re explained.

They can call security but they can't do anything with no proof. You had proof of 2 purchases. They had no proof if they watched cvtv that you picked up that too in store but would have seen you walk in with it.

The police would have given you time to prove what you did if they'd called them.

Catza · 10/08/2024 17:57

spanieleyes22 · 10/08/2024 17:11

Cos I couldn't prove it

You don't need to prove anything. We still have presumption of innocence in this country. THEY have to prove you stole something.

Birdingbear · 10/08/2024 18:04

The fact you left has made you guilty to the shop. Anyone working in a shop knows this is very common with shoplifters and they just leave their 'paid' goods behind.
But even if yoy had paid for it...you have then the wrong receipt and it does matter

They probably called security because she was aggressively arguing with a staff member, not for stealing.

Ivehearditbothways · 10/08/2024 18:14

They have to prove you stole something; you don’t have to prove you’re innocence. But you could with your online banking and they could watch you on the cameras to see that you hadn’t picked it up on the way in. There were multiple ways to see you didn’t do anything wrong.

You were wrong to try and get the refund anyway with the wrong receipt. She couldn’t scan that top for a return for that recipe as they didn’t match and it was really unfair of you to argue with her and ask her to do that. Shop workers really shouldn’t have to deal with your mistake.

It’s your own fault they made money out of you because you walked out so you absolutely look guilty now and if you go back, she’ll point you out and you’ll be watched if the shop is quiet enough. You handled it very badly.

WonderingWanda · 10/08/2024 18:20

Anyone else would just say, oh I've picked up the wrong reciept and then either go home and get the correct one or maybe try and show on your online banking that you bought it. They don't argue and then run off leaving the item....looking totally like a shop lifter. You won't be able to go back in that shop again op.

MissingMoominMamma · 10/08/2024 18:23

spanieleyes22 · 10/08/2024 15:23

Well primark made 12 pound off me. They can resell that top now.

Just go back in with the correct receipt and ask to see the manager. Explain what happened.

seriesoffortunateevents · 10/08/2024 18:25

I’m not sure why you behaved as you did. If you paid on card you could prove both transactions,I’d assume the fact you left the top means you stole it, I’d not go back

Agree with all that. I panicked. Have found other receipt and have the other top but have worn it. Not sure I can face going back there though it's a long drive which is why I argued when I shouldn't have.

Cos I couldn't prove it

But they couldn't prove you'd done anything wrong

Geneva12 · 10/08/2024 18:35

Primark wouldn’t have resold your top. They would have put it into lost property.
They are also unlikely to accept a bank statement for a refund as this only states that you brought something in Primark not what you brought in Primark.
For a refund you need proof of the item you are trying to return and not just that you shopped in the shop.
just go back to there with the correct receipt.

Well that is why I panicked. I didn't think quick enough to prove I didn't steal it but if you want to believe I'm a thief then jog on. The manager and security obvs do so you won't be alone in thinking that

That makes me feel a bit less stupid for both thinking of showing them my bank statement like a lot of people are suggesting. How would that prove anything

Actually some stores can access the record of your purchase from the details on your bank app.

i can’t say for sure that Primark have the same system but Sainsburys refunded a pair of shoes that I’d lost the receipt for when I showed them the transaction (which included more than the shoes) and they used the reference code plus the date of the transaction to find the purchase and confirmed that it included the shoes and then refunded them.

many stores can do that so it’s always worth a try.

PToosher · 10/08/2024 18:47

You should have taken your top and receipt and left the shop.
It's down to them to prove you stole them and they have no right to detain you.

Geneva12 · 10/08/2024 18:48

@MimiSunshine i work in a Primark and we do not accept a bank statement of proof of purchase.

I feel like if I'd tried to do that the manager wouldn't have listened. She just kept saying f that's not the receipt for that item

I know I looked guilty of a scam that's why I left. I couldn't prove I was being honest. And the manager had hold of the top and receipt and was on the phone thingy to security saying come urgently. I was scared . Silly really I guess

Why couldn't you prove you were being honest, given that they said they had CCTV? Surely that would have shown you paying for two different tops?

Sethera · 10/08/2024 18:56

I think you should go back with the right receipt, and calmly explain you tried to return the top on Saturday 10th but you'd brought the wrong receipt, panicked when the discussion became heated and left the top behind. You've now got the right receipt, please can they process the return? Don't demand apologies or get heated/emotional, treat this as the business transaction it is.

parkrun500club · 10/08/2024 18:58

mathanxiety · 10/08/2024 17:29

If you bring your statement on your phone, speak politely, but insist the shop has made the mistake and cameras will prove it, then your chances of getting your refund are high.

The OP knows she didn't steal the item. She needs to go back as soon as possible to the shop, preferably at a time when they're normally not busy, and talk to customer service, bringing her documentation with her.

Yes, they have access to all the transaction records, and they can easily check.

I don't share your confidence. If it was that easy you wouldn't need a receipt for an exchange or refund - you'd just say "I was in at 2pm on Sat 5th and paid at that till" and they'd check the till roll.

But they don't, because it would be a massive faff.

sunnywithmeatbols · 10/08/2024 19:04

I think you need to go back tomorrow or monday if that's the first day they are open with the correct receipt and a screen shot of your bank statement and explain.

if you don't do this, they will assume you are a shoplifter. If you go within 24 hours most stores keep CCTV for 24 hrs so they can see what happened yesterday if you leave it any longer they may not have it and the manager maybe a different one/on holiday.

you were silly to run away because you've made it worse. you should have said sorry I've made a mistake because I bought two and I'll go home and get the receipt.
