To think we just need a new dishwasher?

We moved into a new house about 6 months ago. It has an integrated dishwasher, can’t be more than 4-5 years old. It’s just awful - some stuff comes out dirtier than when it went in, mainly with what looks like dirty water with food bits splashed up them and then dried on.

I’ve cleaned out the whole dishwasher, including the filter and spinner arms, put a cleaner through it, tried different cycles, all to no avail. At the moment we’re having to hand wash some stuff as soon as it comes out.

Is there anything else I can try or do we just need a new dishwasher?

If the property is under ten years old, would the house guarantee cover replacement? Probably too long after you bought the house to get anything for it from the seller who did not tell you about this.

Thanks.

The house was built in the 1890s so no solution there sadly.

To be fair, I wouldn’t have expected the seller to mention this and wouldn’t raise
it with them anyway. Just trying to see if there is anything else I can do to resolve before buying a new one!

YouTube is pretty good for these things.

LoremIpsumCici · 10/08/2024 08:42

A plumber might be able to fix it. Sounds like the dishwasher isn’t draining properly.

MarshmallowVeronica · 10/08/2024 08:44

There was another thread about similar issues with a dishwasher and one poster said their problem turned out to be caused by a blocked drain.

Jc2001 · 10/08/2024 08:46

It's worth getting in someone to take a look. We had a similar problem it turned out to be a pump gone. It's was cheaper than a new machine.

Find someone who does appliance repairs/maintenance to come and look at it.

StarlightLady · 10/08/2024 08:52

First of all, can you feel whether it is definitely getting hot; try opening mid-cycle. It might not be heating up.

Secondly, the outlet pipe could be clogged. Some people (maybe this includes the previous owners?) do try and treat dishwashers like food disposal units. It is also possible the machine is standing on its own outlet pipe; yep I’ve been there. Access may or nay not be difficult depending on the original fitter.

Use top of the range dishwasher tablets if you are not doing so.

lf it is an established brand name, call to see how much a service visit would cost, which may or may not sort it. Then weigh up against the price of a replacement.

lntergrated machines cost more which l always felt a bit of a con as the finishing is not required on the outer casing.

Good luck!!

We had exactly the same with ours. I did all the cleaning etc stuff was still coming out dirty .
Luckily we had cover still, call the repairs line, bloke came out and it was actually our motor . It WAS working but very poorly, new motor fitted and no issues since.

I'm sure how much that would cost or if it would just be advisable to buy new. Do you know a repairman? We have a great lad who fixes machines and he'd tell you straight which was better option.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, lots of stuff I haven’t considered and which I’ll look into. Hopefully get it resolved as I could do without the cost of a new one!

Yep, I vote pump problem…

StarlightLady · 10/08/2024 09:30

If you do have to go for a nee one, check the guarantee periods as well as price. Some shops and manufacturers offer longer than others.

TemuSpecialBuy · 10/08/2024 09:31

Life was s too short
i vote buy a new dishwasher

seriesoffortunateevents · 10/08/2024 09:32

Ours did this, we cleaned all the spinning arms, ensuring no holes blocked, and then obvs put a dishwasher cleaner through it, filled salt and rinse aid, and learned that I need to put it on its hottest /hardest cycle. On ours you can press a button so it a 3.5 hour wash is done in 90 mins, the water comes out harder, and the dishes and glasses are now all sparkling. The normal cycles just don’t cut it. My sil’s is the same. Also don’t over stack it.

Mindymomo · 10/08/2024 09:34

We cannot seem to get any joy with cheaper supermarket dishwasher tabs, everything comes out dirtier than it went in. The dearer tabs are good. Check that the water is properly draining away outside. Otherwise it’s probably cheaper to get a new dishwasher.

BrendaSmall · 10/08/2024 09:34

My dad had a dishwasher and it was recommended that the dishes had to be rinsed before going into the dishwasher!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/08/2024 09:34

Is it Bosch? Ours was pretty similar, there was a period where Bosch dishwasher had a lot of problems.

I see you’ve cleaned the arms and the filter but sometimes there’s a lake of dirty water at the bottom of the machine that has sedimented after a time of careless use (ahem students who never cleaned it out properly for 3 years).
It was a dirty job but I took out the filter and its bits then used a cup and a sponge to get rid of the dirty sump water. Rubber gloves, wipe round with strong detergent and a few HOT runs with old style powder dishwasher detergent/salt/rinse aid instead of pods.
Traditional dishwasher powder is made mostly of washing soda but it’s the only one my 15yo Bosch 9 place settings will reliably use.
