Dh beer intake

cantwait4orsummer · 10/08/2024 07:03

I'm really worried about DH beer intake- he drinks about 4 times a week and every time 4/5 cans. Not a pub goer, no issues being sick or getting up early. start drinking after 5/6 pm. He is 40. I feel like he is going to damage his liver. no health problems at the moment. I know you can't control someone's alcohol but this really worries me. I have booked him a health review with private GP : Will this be picked up ? He is going on his own. i'm glad he has atleast agreed to do it. I'm generally a bit anxious person. i hope i'm not making this big thing when it's not. i do drink but mine is very occasional- there are times when i dont even drinks for months and months. i feel like he is functioning alcoholic but he does not know it. we have young children. He has three alcohol free days. how can i not worry about it as the thought of him having liver disease wakes up in the middle of the night ?

MN is nearly as bad for competitive temperance on alcohol-related questions as it is for competitive undereating on food-related questions. You won't get a useful answer on here necessarily.

I would say there are loads of adults, in the UK and abroad, who can't face eating their dinner without a grown-up drink. The bit that you are right to be concerned about is the 4-5 cans, which is more than just an accompaniment to a meal. He probably needs to rein himself in and just have "a drink" in the evening, not use "a drink" as a synonym for a session.

Hopefully the doctor can get that through to him and hopefully at this stage it's just a habit that can be got out of.

I used to drink exactly the same way as your DH, until I got a drinking app and gave myself a scare.

I switched to AF beers (there are many good ones these days!) and that solved the problem for me.

He is having days off so it doesn't sound like he's dependent on the alcohol. I think I just found beer very moreish! AF beer works perfectly. He could even try doing AF midweek and alcohol at the weekend if he has a fave beer.

seriesoffortunateevents · 10/08/2024 12:12

It’s not great but it isn’t send him to the doctors territory for me either.

I'm amazed he's going to go to the apt to be honest, don't go with him OP. What did he say when you told him you'd booked his apt?

Me too.

This is general health review appointment as he is 40, I think it's important to have this. This is the reason he has agreed to do it. if it's just related to alcohol probably he wouldn't attend it as he does not see this as a problem

It’s far too much.

ATenShun · 10/08/2024 18:21

A can of regular beer/lager contains approx 2 units. So he is likely having around 9 units per session and 36 units a week. Although a good bit higher than the recommended amount, I'd suspect it isn't all that much different to a great many men and women. The 14 units a week advice from the NHS is optimistic at best as that is only 1 can of lager a day.

What alcohol free beers do you recommend? I tried a couple and wasn't impressed.

The Aldi pilsner in a six pack is ok. Blue cardboard packaging.

The issue is my father in law is an alcoholic- about three bottles of whiskey a week. He is now diagnosed with Fatty liver disease and gout. He is in early 60s and has a binge drinking since his 30s.

Which fatty liver? Alcoholic or non alcoholic? The latter is usually caused by being overweight.

GettingStuffed · 10/08/2024 23:47

Ooh I can help with alcohol free beers. My favourite is Erdinger isotonic in Spoons. Bira moretti is a very gluggable sweeter beer. I've found that Stella no alcohol is much nicer than the alcoholic version. Guinness is also pretty good but it's sweeter than the norms one.

If you want a lager then I think Corona cero is OK.

EatTheGnome · 10/08/2024 23:52

It's a normalised amount in the UK but its too much. Especially sat at home plonked on the sofa 3 times a week. Sadly many people will drink 1-2 glasses of wine a night which is basically the same amount and because its low volume say its not a problem. Anyone who can't take it or leave it has a problem. X

Can thoroughly recommend Leffe, which I found to be surprisingly good. Asahi and San Miguel aren't bad either IMO.

MiniCooperLover · 11/08/2024 10:09

My husband likes Blue Saint

candycane222 · 13/08/2024 10:12

Adnam's ghost ship low alc is a nice bitter imo, if you don't like lager.

Low alc beers are great in warm weather, very thirst quenching and you can glug them down!

One thing about your DH quantities of beer is the calories (on top of the likely inactivity while hes drinking it) His doctor will definitely weigh him and if hes getting a bit tubby, the low alcs also are much lower calorie

GasPanic · 13/08/2024 10:33

It's not a huge amount. People tut about stuff like this, then spend their whole time on the sofa overweight eating chocolate, crisps and takeaways.

The "limit" of 14 units a week is silly for a whole host of reasons, not least because people vary hugely in their ability to process and handle alcohol. There is a huge difference between a 6ft 5 inch man and a 5ft woman in their dietary requirements.

The three bottles a week of scotch though, that is bad.

Well a few people have answered this already but I usually drink the Aldi 0% Pilsner at home, and when out my fave is the Erdinger but most of the nicer beer/lager brands have their own so it's nice to try something else too, the Asahi is lovely. As a rule though, they do need to be very cold, more so than normal beer.

KreedKafer · 13/08/2024 11:22

I think you're being a bit OTT getting worked up about a man having four cans of lager a few times a week. He's not drinking during the day, he's not getting hammered, he's not drinking every day, and he's not drinking very strong beer.

cantwait4orsummer · 13/08/2024 21:37

Honestly since Friday he hasn't drink a single can. There is no way of him knowing that I put it on mumsnet. Even he does know he wouldn't care less anyway. I can see four cans of beer in the fridge which he bought it today to drink for tomorrow, I must say I'm very surprised with this behaviour. i haven't mentioned anything, this is very strange.

It sounds like a lot to me, and also just a lot of volume of a very high calorie liquid. It mustn’t be good for his weight or general health.

cantwait4orsummer · 20/08/2024 07:10

Dh told GP 36 units pw, and on health assessment meter it's showing green but GP added on notes to decrease alcohol consumption but certainly they didn't make a big thing out of it.

That's good then - he didn't lie, and the GP isn't massively concerned?

I think a PPs suggestion about seeing about a marginal reduction - either getting it down to 3 nights a week, or getting a couple of the nights down to a can or two, seems like a sensible middle of the road option.

I'd recommend ghost ship for an alcohol free bitter. Maybe you could suggest you both do sober October and use it as a time to try some alcohol free options out? I was delighted to locate an alcohol free beer and a cider I enjoy - it's so handy to have those options while I am out.

cantwait4orsummer · 20/08/2024 07:43

@Ineffable23 I feel much better after this assessment, and will buy alcohol free beers, see if he likes the taste. The fact is he is willing to improve his health and stress, that's a step in a positive direction.
