To ask for a hand hold

Is anyone awake?
I'm staying in a hotel on my own and I've just had two men trying to get into my room, very insistent, banging on the door and pushing it.
I rang reception and they went away, reception said they were drunk and had the wrong room and they were sorting them out a new key card and they would escort them to their room. But I'm lying here now thinking why do they need a new card if they just had the wrong room? Why were they knocking and then banging on the door and saying let us in if they thought it was their room, there wouldn't be anyone in here if that was the case?
Maybe they were just drunk and I'm over thinking it.
I know I won't sleep for ages now and I've got a long drive in the morning so just hoping for a hand hold to calm me down

This is awful. Poor you. Have you got a deadlock or catch to put on from the inside. Can you put a chair under the handle?

Daisypod · 10/08/2024 04:02

The catch is one and chair under the door handle with all my luggage on it. I know there's people in the rooms next to me and opposite

It sounds like they were drunk and got the wrong room. It sounds scary though. They can’t get in without a key card and you can reassure yourself by deadlocking the door. I hope you manage some sleep.

JustTalkToThem · 10/08/2024 04:12

You’re fine. They didn’t get in the “first time” you’ll be fine during the second time.

Daisypod · 10/08/2024 04:19

Thanks. Yes they were drunk but they were so insistent, banging the door and saying to let them in, why would they do that?

QuestionableMouse · 10/08/2024 04:21

You're fine. They sound like drunk idiots who just got the wrong room. Put a podcast or something on and try to relax.

If it helps, remember they have no idea who's inside of the room so they're not after you personally!

Daisypod · 10/08/2024 04:23

That's true

SwingTheMonkey · 10/08/2024 04:29

They were insistent because they were drunk and thought your room was theirs. Try and get some sleep.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 10/08/2024 04:30

There's probably someone else sharing the room with them, hence the asking to be let in. They probably went out without the key card, leaving it with room mate, or room mate was with them but returned earlier, hence the being given new key cards. It's scary op but the hotel seem to be dealing with it effectively and as another pp said, they didn't get in and it wasn't aimed at you personally, you'll be fine.

MrsCatE · 10/08/2024 04:31

I'm so sorry - no wonder you can't sleep! I used to work away from home a lot and would always request a non ground floor room. However, my best security was a rubber door 'jamm'/ stopper. I

Typical drunk people behaviour.

Horrible though.

Daisypod · 10/08/2024 04:32

I meant to get a door stopper but forgot and then thought I was being silly. I won't forget next time! Hoping it will be light soon as I think I'll feel better about sleeping then and can hopefully get a couple of hours before needing to be up

Don’t overthink it. It’s Friday, bunch of idiots been out drinking. Probably three of them - twin room with a sofa setup.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 10/08/2024 05:08

This happened to me a few weeks ago in a hotel I stay in frequently for work. It scared the life out of me. Unfortunately the reception wasn't manned 24/7 so had no one to call.

Daisypod · 10/08/2024 05:20

Oh god @Toomuchgoingon79 that must have been terrifying, I was so relieved when reception answered the phone and to be far they came up very quickly, although he was quite young and didn't seem to know what to do or say

Oh I’m sorry to read what’s happened, daisy, and that you’re still awake. Like others have said, it sounds like they had a friend or someone in their room whom they expected to let them in. Your locks stopped them then so you are safe now. It’s just the mind to settle down now, can you try some meditation, focus on the breath etc?

Daisypod · 10/08/2024 08:41

I managed to fall asleep about 6 for 2 hours but I feel shocking now. I'm supposed to have breakfast as I've paid for it but I don't think I can face it. I'm just going to get home as quickly as possible

I was once in a hotel and had to take a very drunk friend back to her room.I tried to unlock her door but couldn't gain entry;she'd forgotten which floor she was on and it turned out her room was the same room but next floor up.

No one opened the door but if there was someone in there I hope we didn't disturb them.

Glad your safe but genuinely sounds like drunken foolishness.

I would be asking for a refund

Why? The hotel can’t control whether a drunk person attempts to gain access to the wrong door. Op reported it and the hotel sorted it out. Nothing there warrants a refund!

ILikeToChaseCats · 10/08/2024 20:49

I used to live in a flat in a city. My brother asked to sleep on my sofa one night as he had a night out in same city but lived about 30 miles away. I said fine and gave him a key. There were 4 flats on each floor with 2 doors on each end of the floor.

My brother (who is a very sensible engineer) came home, not drunk or anything and got confused. He tried to open my neighbours door with the key I had given him. When it didn't work he started knocking on my neighbours door to wake me up as he thought. He said the neighbour ( a man in his fifties) sounded terrified and shouted through the door who was it and what did they want. It was about 2 in the morning.

Only then did my brother realise he was at the wrong door and quickly put key in my door and came in. He told me the next day and I was mortified for him. He did go and apologise to neighbour with a peace offering.

Anyway completely understand why you got a huge fright. That would have scared the crap out of me as well. It does sound like two daft drunk men though and they are likely snoring in their own room by now oblivious. Highly unlikely you will hear from them again tonight. You've locked your door and put stuff in front so you will be fine. I hate hotels though when I am on my own. Strange noises and people coming and going. Very unrelaxing. I hope you get some sleep soon and my story about my brother distracted you a wee bit.

Most hotels do not do this. Just Premier Inn.
