Please can any experienced mammas lend some advice.

DS is about to turn 2 and was sent home from nursery for being sick on Tuesday. Hadn't been sick since Tuesday evening.

However, he has not been himself at all since. Still isn't eating much at all. First thing when he wakes up he is his happy self and eats breakfast but then needs to go down earlier for afternoon nap and refuses lunch.

After his nap he refuses to eat all day and is so tired we've put him down around 4.30pm. We've tried doubling his afternoon nap, which helped but yesterday we just let him sleep as long as he wanted and he was better post nap but lo and behold, he was up a lot in the night and we wondered if too much day sleep was affecting his recovery sleep over night.

Problem is when he wakes from his nap, he is like he was as a newborn, non stop crying, we have no idea what he wants even though he is good speech wise, refuses food, TV works for a short while, demands cuddles but doesn't want them, cries out for whichever parent isn't in the room, eventually come 4.30pm, he wants bed again and will nap for an hour and wake up. This goes on all evening and he's clearly not comfortable. The naps don't stop his tired tantrums.

Nothing works in terms of cheering him up, DH took him to the shops earlier, and he usually loves the car and being out but hysterically cried non stop both in car and at the shops.

It's day 3 now and we are at our wits end and just want our happy boy who loves food back.

Not only are we so worried but sleep deprived too and exhausted. We've both take days off work to help him but if he's not been physically sick for 3 days now, what's wrong?

Ear infection ?

Is he sore anywhere?

Could be Covid - a lot of that around right now

UpUpUpU · 09/08/2024 17:40

is he getting any pain relief? Does he have a temperature? My first thought was ear infection

curiouslycoy · 09/08/2024 17:41

If he sleeps 4.30 he will be awake and hysterical on/off at hour intervals until we go to bed at 9.30pm then sleep through, one day until 5am, one day until 7.30am but last night because he slept all afternoon he went down normal time of 7pm but was up at 11.30pm hysterical and 5am, assumed he was hungry so gave him milk.

Worth noting he has had wet nappies and if he hasn't managed enough water we feed it through a calpol syringe.

Aww sounds so tough, poor lad. Are you calpolling him? Sounds like he might be in pain. So horrible for you.

curiouslycoy · 09/08/2024 17:42

Yes we've been keeping up with calpol and taking his temperature regularly. Asking him if he has 'ouchie' but nothing back from him.

He isn't pulling his ear but hasn't thought of it, maybe will try an emergency Dr over weekend.

He would really need to be examined by a Doctor. He is clearly in pain and unwell.

curiouslycoy · 09/08/2024 17:45

Wednesday we assumed he was recovering from the after math of sickness bug, yesterday he was perfect in the morning and we let him sleep so he seemed to be much improved in the afternoon.

Today has been strange as morning he was himself and happy but like clockwork straight after his nap he is hysterical. We thought over tiredness but will try get a private Dr.

Bless you and him. It’s hard when they can’t articulate how they feel etc…

I would try with paracetamol then if there is pain that will hopefully take it away. I’d probably let him sleep when he wants to whilst poorly and I wouldn’t wake him up and let him sleep himself better - even though I know that means you’re likely to be up through the night. If you know this is only for a few nights until he’s back to normal then hopefully that makes it easier for you.

I’d give him ice lollies as it will help hydrate him and give him a sugar boost.

You know your DS better than anyone and if you feel he’s not getting better then you call the doctors and see if they’ll give him the once over.

Hopefully he’ll start feeling better very soon, good luck x

I'd definitely guess ear infection or such like. Poor lad, hope he's better soon.
