AIBU to be struggling with DS9 diet?

DS9 is slim and very active with a high metabolism. I feel like I'm struggling getting enough fat and protein into him.

Won't eat:
Roasted or plain chicken, sausages or fish as says too dark (sausages) or chewy (chicken). Meat and fish have to be breaded.
No fruit (hates the skin/pips). Only drinks smoothies.
Only veg is boiled carrots, cauli and broccoli so has these nearly every night. No peas or sweetcorn etc
No cold salad veg apart from peeled and thinly sliced carrots so no cucumber, peppers, lettuce etc.
No custard/rice pudding.
Cheese is only grated on the side to eat with fingers and not sliced in a sandwich or melted on top of things.
Will eat chips/oven potato but not his fav.

The only food he wolfs down every time with no question is pasta (so I hide lots of veg in the sauce), pizza and cereal.

He needs a mid morning and mid afternoon snack. He will sometimes have oatcakes, grated cheese and cashew nuts. Crisps and choc now and again. He drinks a lot of milk.

I am really stuck with meal planning, shopping and cooking (I do all of this and work less hours than DH). His brother won't eat beans, cheese or eggs either.

Will he eat yoghurt? Try proper Greek yoghurt with cereal and in smoothies. Loads of protein and good fat

onehotpotato · 09/08/2024 13:05

Yes he will eat Greek Yoghurt but only with honey on.

He just had a huge meltdown over a puzzle he couldn't do but then I realised he'd only had a croissant with jam and a smoothie for breakfast plus a cookie mid morning.

I've been in bed ill so DH has been in charge of meals today but as I do all the cooking, he finds it hard.

Look for smoothie recipes with high protein and make them yourself at home. You can add full fat Greek yogurt, oats, peanut butter, avocado etc.
My DD also likes a smoothie bowl with fruit on top

Royalshyness · 09/08/2024 13:10

He’s a lot better than my ds (same age)
mine will only eat pasta plain with breaded food on the side

I don’t I know what to do - my other child eats everything (prawns, chicken, salmon - whatever veg I give him)

onehotpotato · 09/08/2024 13:15

It's hard as he gets so hangry.

He hates bits in a drink so I can't add oats. I've tried making homemade smoothies but he only likes the absolutely smooth ones from the shop which are pretty much juice.

It's all about texture so I've been looking at ARFID.

Royalshyness
How many times does he eat pasta in a week then? Will it make him constipated if he has too much?

His brother eats all the fruit and veg under the sun plus roast chicken and cooked meat.

What about pancakes or eggy bread?
You can make savoury scotch pancakes by adding grated cheese and chopped spinach/ham. Or sweet ones with mashed banana to eat with yoghurt and honey.
Flapjacks are good for a wholesome snack. Add fruit/seeds/nuts.

Horsesontheloose · 09/08/2024 13:24

Cereal and full fat milk with banana? Toast and peanut butter? Custard or rice pudding? Corner yogurts, protein yogurts? I think his diet is not too bad at all for a wee boy. My 12 year old is very sporty and slim and we struggle with getting a good quality diet he will eat.

Girasoli · 09/08/2024 13:26

Thinking of non meat proteiny things -
Toast scrambled egg and beans?
How about pitta bread and hummus for a snack?
Toast or apple slices and peanut butter

You could try making milkshake with just fruit and milk. You can get it pretty smooth if you strain it afterwards

I wouldn't worry about too much pasta, plenty of Italian people eat it nearly every day (lots of my relatives do)
Ooh how about carbonara?

My DS8 isn't a fussy eater but he has hollow legs, I'm constantly feeding him!

TwinklyAmberOrca · 09/08/2024 13:28

Sounds like there is plenty that he will eat.

What about meatballs? He can have them with pasta.

Just make that 5 veg pasta sauce and freeze it in one portion sizes so you can encourage him to try other foods then let him eat the pasta and sauce.

Does he eat wholemeal pasta?

Thewildthingsarewithme · 09/08/2024 13:34

Would he eat meat/fish if you breadcrumbed it yourself? Salmon fish fingers and chicken nuggets are v easy to do yourself so no nasties and you can freeze then pop in the air fryer to have as mid morning/afternoon snacks
would be eat Jacob’s crackers? Or brown pitta, my LO will have these with avacado or peanut butter spread on them

onehotpotato · 09/08/2024 13:45

Thank you. He loves pancakes so we have them often.

No avocado, banana or apple (tried many times).

He will only eat meatballs from a tin, not homemade or shop bought.

Hummus is hit or miss.

Won't eat flapjacks/fruit/seeds.

Pots of jelly, as a snack.
Omelette, either plain or with cheese, whatever veg he will eat.
Rice? With a mild curry or sweet and sour.

whatsupluckyducky · 09/08/2024 13:56

You could add a unflavoured protein powder to smoothies or pasta sauce?
