To think it’s strange for a three year old not to snack?

Just that really, not suggesting he’s malnourished or anything (3 meals a day) but no snacks in between.

I’ve been a nanny for about 15 years, none of my kids have routinely snacked.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/08/2024 17:37

If he isn’t hungry, and doesn’t want any snacks, and he’s getting a balanced, healthy diet, then there's nothing wrong with it, in my opinion.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 08/08/2024 17:37

Snacking is a fairly recent phenomenon believe. Wasn't a thing years ago. So no I don't think it's unusual.

FumingTRex · 08/08/2024 17:39

Snacks werent a thing when i was a kid, i only found out about them when i had my first and other people asked why i didnt give him snacks.

mytuppennyworth · 08/08/2024 17:39

3 year olds shouldn't snack, - no children should. It's just a silly modern habit

BunsenBurnerBaby · 08/08/2024 17:41

My kids didn’t and don’t snack as a rule. I never encouraged it either; wouldn’t deny them food if they said they were hungry but didn’t give snacks as routine. Mine don’t have huge appetites either TBH. Have encouraged eating proper food at mealtimes. Adults behave like that too in this house.

WolfFoxHare · 08/08/2024 17:44

DS never snacked. He might have had something snacky as a treat when we were on holiday but not as a matter of course. I found my friends’ DC who snacked all the time ate less at mealtimes.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 08/08/2024 17:51

I think it's probably unusual in the sense that the majority of three year olds are in some kind of childcare and I imagine the vast majority of nurseries offer snacks. And then when they turn four and start school, there are probably snacks on offer there was well (DD is given fruit morning and afternoon in reception - we don't send it in).

So I don't think it's strange in the sense that there's anything wrong or inherently odd about it. But it's probably strange in the sense it's different to the norm.

ThatMrsM · 08/08/2024 18:50

I think it's probably quite unusual, but definitely not a bad thing if he's eating well at meal time and not asking for food in between. My 2 and 4 year old ask for snacks 2-3 times a day, despite eating 3 decent meals. I guess they just have big appetites.

Doesn't mind a comma.

NuffSaidSam · 08/08/2024 18:52

I don't think it's strange.

Some kids snack, some don't. Neither is strange.

RaspberryBeretxx · 08/08/2024 18:53

I have a mostly non snacking 3 yo but if she has breakfast at 8, lunch at 12, dinner at 6, the 6 hours between lunch and dinner is just too long so she needs something (usually fruit or crackers). I think of it more as 4 meals and we try and give the snacky meal at the/a table.

Randomlygeneratedname · 08/08/2024 18:54

My kids don't really have snacks, no limitations to it, they just rarely ask.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2024 18:56

Have no issues with snacks as long as eats breakfast lunch and tea

Think as they snack at pre school and school. They get used to it

Catza · 08/08/2024 19:43

Snack is a bit of a weird concept and wasn’t a thing when I was a child. None of us snack between meals.

MrsApplepants · 08/08/2024 19:45

Not strange at all. Really good eating habit I would have thought

Lifestooshort71 · 08/08/2024 19:49

The snack cupboard never existed when I had my 2 children but now it seems to be a regular feature in families' kitchens

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 08/08/2024 19:51

None of my 3 have had regular snacks, unless you count the box of raisens I'd give to keep them quiet during appointments.

Grown up into teenagers so no harm done.

SilverSilos · 08/08/2024 21:04

I have an 8 year old who has never really got the whole 3 meals a day thing. She snacks all of the time and has done since she was weaned. Just the way she is. Wouldn't think it unusual for another child to eat 3 times a day only. It's just different.

Createausername1970 · 08/08/2024 21:10

It wasn't a thing when I was growing up. I had breakfast, dinner and tea - and sometimes milk and biscuits before bed, but that was a treat if my parents could afford a packet of biscuits that week.

Pitstop1986 · 08/08/2024 21:15

My 2 year old rarely has a snack between meals. She eats good sized portions- can eat a bowl of porridge the same size as mine for breakfast! - I used to give her snacks as a baby, but as she's grown older, she'd rather play than eat! The only time we do give her snacks really is if she poops her nappy and we give her a few raisins or something as a bribe to keep her still long enough to clean her up and put a new nappy on

79pinkballoons · 08/08/2024 21:22

My 3 have never had snacks between meals. DH and I don't snack either.

LightFull · 08/08/2024 21:25

DC shouldn't ever be snacking between meals

It's a fairly recent thing and there's no point to it

LemonRedwood · 08/08/2024 21:26

Snack is one of those words that starts to look really weird when you see it written down a lot.

Also definitely a recent phenomenon. Used to just be a biscuit made by Cadbury's.

MapleTreeValley · 08/08/2024 21:27

It's a good thing, most kids eat too many snacks.
