To have blocked this person after weird vibes (FB marketplace)

I've listed a white good that I'm now giving for free as I need it out of my tiny house but it's too new to scrap.

Guy messaged with a string of questions, honestly like a list of 10 questions back to back. Half already in the description which I pointed him to and some like the model number and if I had a receipt. So I answered politely as aware it does look suspicious that I'm giving it for free.

Bit of back and forth but he never says please or thank you, just abrupt one liners, finally saying

'ok where is it? I will collect tomorrow'

I gave my postcode which (again) was already in the description and had my back up a bit by now.

'where is that?' - at this point I'm a bit like, marketplace is meant to be in a local-ish radius and the town is obvious from the postcode. And isn't the first thing you do with a postcode to plug it into Google maps?

He had no identifiable info from his FB profile, no photos, no posts or ANY info just a blank profile.

I would be home alone with my baby and this exchange made me feel really uncomfortable (it's hard to get the vibes across just by describing it)

So I said sorry I won't be in tomorrow and then blocked him.

WIBU? would you have done the same or just chalked it up to rude people on marketplace? (Of which I've had my fair share but never felt this weirded out!)

It's probably a scammer. Facebook marketplace is almost unusable because of the amount of them - both selling and buying.

OrwellianTimes · 07/08/2024 07:29

I’ve blocked people on marketplace for less than that.

is it still available

all sent within 30mins whilst I was away from my phone. There are some weirdo out there.

Flexmybin · 07/08/2024 07:29

You did the right thing. Facebook marketplace is full of entitled idiots.

I have a similar situation - advertised something for free which clearly states collection only and I have a CF asking if I can make a 40 mile round trip to deliver it. Oh, and are there any extras I can give her as she's desperate?

To be fair the first question is what comes up on autofill if you try to send a message to a seller.

StuckOnTheCeiling · 07/08/2024 07:31

Definitely not unreasonable, I’m generous with the block button on marketplace! Too many scammers and weirdos, you have to stick with your gut sometimes. If they are genuine but just odd, well that’s a shame but I’m sure they’ll find an alternative.

Zonder · 07/08/2024 07:32

OP I would in future not put my exact postcode in the sales bit and would only give it to the buyer if I knew they were definitely wanting to come.

PearTreeBoat · 07/08/2024 07:33

I can't stand people who bombard you with questions that are already answered in the description, surely it takes less effort to actually read the description in full rather than send a whole barrage of questions.

End of the day it is your item to do as you please with and if you don't want to give it away to him (or more importantly you don't want him to have your full address) then that is absolutely your prerogative.

Zonder · 07/08/2024 07:31

My point is it’s rude to message 8 times in a half hour period.

Londonrach1 · 07/08/2024 07:41

I sell alot of dd outgrown stuff on marketplace...70÷ are other parents and always collect...you get some scammers...very easy to see them...I just block so yes well done for blocking...I never give address until the day of collection and a rough area if asked re collection

CosmicDaisyChain · 07/08/2024 07:42

I’ve blocked on eBay for far less. Some people seem to think you are a personal shopper to take demands. Nothing winds me up more than a diatribe of endless questions that were all answered in the description they obviously didn’t read. It’s like they think you are permanently logged in to answer questions instantly and if you don’t answer instantly you get messages like ‘?????????!!!!!!!!!’ That’s an instant block for me.

’is it big, as big or bigger than the one I’ve got?’

erm I’m not actually in your kitchen so I wouldn’t know.,

the best one was a woman demanding a replacement for something I didn’t sell 😂

Ryeman · 07/08/2024 08:10

Marketplace is full of dicks. I find it worse if the item is free tbh, so i try to give things a token price.

Yes I used to just give the first half - I live in a large town so lots of people collect on foot or by bus and it saves time if they know a more precise location up front. There are about 30 addresses with the same postcode so I'm not toooo worried but I don't think I'll do it again 😬

Marketplace is awful. Weirdly it’s worse when stuff is free 😂 I’ve taken stuff to the recycling centre (dump) instead!!

Tesco whoosh bin thief!

not sure what to do here… if anything.

we sat our 30/30L chrome bin out by our normal bins waiting to jet wash them all on bin day to give them all a good clean. Noticed today it isn’t there so I’ve gone through our camera footage and have the videos of a Tesco whoosh delivery driver bringing an order to the door at 2pm (whilst going over to have a look at the bin) then a video of him reversing onto our property at 11pm that night and taking the bin away in his car.
now… granted it was beside our bins but they were all on our property and it was there for a reason… so do I report it or leave it ?
my concern is that you never know who you’re dealing with and reporting it could bring attention to our house. We have a couple of nice cars and I’m concerned of the come back but at the same time I’m fuming that someone thought it was acceptable to deliver my shopping then drive back under the cover of darkness and take something that wasn’t there’s 🙈

You need to make your own new thread if you want more replies.

If it was me, I wouldn’t bother reporting it for the reason you’ve given. He probably thought it was put out for collection as near to the bins.

WoolySnail · 10/08/2024 19:38

What I've started doing is giving the address minus the house number, and tell them to message when they are setting off and I'll send the house number then. Not fool proof but weeds out quite a few. I started doing this after bil gave someone his address to collect and item, they started haggling on price and he turned them down and figured that was it...they then turned up at gone 11pm knocking on the door saying they'd pay full price after all!!!

itsmylife7 · 10/08/2024 19:49

Use your local Gumtree.... free and no identifying information given until you decide.

Emmz1510 · 10/08/2024 20:06

At best it was some rude, entitled and rather stupid weirdo - it’s amazing the effect free stuff can have on some people- or it was a scammer and you could potentially be at risk from them coming to your home. Either way, you did the right thing

LaraThot · 10/08/2024 20:08

Never give away anything for free on marketplace.

Freecycle attracts less shithouses.

TeamPolin · 10/08/2024 20:15

Marketplace is awful.

Do you have Emmaus House or something near you? They would probably come and collect and would give to someone genuinely in need.

Bingate101 · 10/08/2024 20:25

Sorry… never posted before and thought I had 🤦🏻‍♀️
