Hi all,

this isn’t really an Aibu post but I’m desperate for any advice.
i do not have an nhs dentist and finding one in wales is next to impossible. Two days ago I had a tooth out via emergency dentist except I’m now in more pain than ever. I’ve got a terrible headache along with excruciating pain and I feel really sick. I’ve attached a photo but there appears to be a large red lump growing next to it. I have an awful taste in my mouth. Any advice?

also I know my teeth are awful and gross, please no shame it’s embarrassing enough anyway

Glad you've been seen and that it's eased off.

Just because you live in Wales you do not have to see a dentist in Wales , you can try to see if any dentist over the border will see you .

I would try to phone up dentists in Wales as well as dentists who do NHS now all have a new patient target they have to hit each week.

It looks as if you have a temporary filling in one of your teeth and you will not want to leave it long before it causes you problems again.

Edited

Not quite so easy as nhs wales is funded differently than nhs England

Yes it is , but Wales, unlike England , has given each dentist a new patient target they must hit. Unfortunately that does mean regular patients may not get the regular care they are used to , but it does mean that people needing care who have not been seen in the last two years should be more easily able to be seen.

The other downside is the new patient target has not come with any additional funding and in areas of high needs it is virtually impossible to hit these targets and when a dentist does they often lose money as many of these patients need a lot of treatment. It has acted to drive even more dentists away from the NHS because more and more is expected from them for less and less money.

The final thing in Wales is LHBs are moving to central waiting lists to shepherd the dwindling resources so it’s worthwhile finding out if your area has a central waiting list .

You are free to see a dentist in England if they have capacity to see you. On,y a few areas restrict access via waiting lists and postcodes.

In Wales the emphasis is on access rather than providing regular care . There is not the money in Wales, England , Scotland or NI to prop up NHS dentistry , even the new U.K. government is only looking at solutions using the same , inadequate budget.

Oh no! Can you go back to whoever you saw?

Jifmicroliquid · 09/08/2024 05:20

Ring the dentist again first thing.

Zombieof3 · 09/08/2024 05:30

I will do, I’m so fed up of being in pain. I was taking my cocodamol but I’ve run out of those so now I’m in an even worse position pain wise as I have no pain killers xx

I’ve just looked and the packing seems to be in place and the pain is mainly coming from the tooth next to it and upper jaw now. I’m feeling really sick, I’m going to have to try and work through this until I can get a dentist appointment, I’m honestly so fed up and trying not to cry xx

Is that a temporary filling in the tooth in front? Has it been in place some time? It may be the culprit.

Lollygaggle · 09/08/2024 08:54

Please do not use heat on outside of face , as you have an infection it promotes infection and may make it track outwards.
