Employers making you do training at home on your phone

This seems to be a new thing? First I heard of it was last summer when dd got a summer job. They emailed her all these training videos and documents and she had to complete it all in her spare time. At the time she just had a phone no laptop. It was very time consuming. She would get messages from her manager who could see she hadn't yet completed the trainings

Then same again this year. She had to download teams to her phone and complete 6-8 hours of training in her own time. Surely this isn't legal?

My friend is in her 50s and started a job last week. She had to do an unpaid training shift of 4 hours to see if she was suitable. They classed it as part of the interview process which I suppose is fair. Then she did 3 shifts last week 7-9 hours on 3 days. None of the girls took a lunch break so she didn't either. She said she managed to eat a banana. And then today the manager emailed her with all these training videos and long documents that she has to complete before her next shift on Thursday . Is this just normal now? To me it's taking the piss!!!!! Both the no breaks and now the training. She has plans tmw and besides which doesn't want to have to do training unpaid and on her days off??? Seems to be becoming the norm though ?

The awful online training is pretty common - but it has to be paid, if it’s outside contracted hours, wherever it’s done.

You should be paid for training. But people applying for jobs are usually not wanting to make a fuss and get ACAS involved so dodgy employers get away with it.

No, they are supposed to be done in work time and with work associated devices. What if she didn't have a decent smart phone? How would she be expected to complete?

Circlesinthesand · 06/08/2024 18:42

I have just been sent a load of these. I'll be doing them in work time or not at all!

BCBird · 06/08/2024 18:43

They are CF. Someone i know who works in care, minimum wage, has to do this. I say it again- CF

My dd was scared to complain.

My friend is asking me what to do. First he manager shouldn't email on her day off? And second he calls it "remote training". That's taking the piss?? There's no remote working. It's 100%office based? She said the email
Was unclear. I said that's cos he's chancing his arm right!

Could your daughter say she doesn't have a device compatible, eg very very old iPhone? Or a brick phone?

spanieleyes22 · 06/08/2024 19:48

My dd ended up doing it all in her own time my friend is a different matter though. She's busy mum and doesn't have hours to spend doing this and not getting paid?

Get her to check, I work in care and have to do this , we can do it at work in their devices or at home, it’s always paid though!

Mehmeh22 · 06/08/2024 19:56

I've had to do training in my own time which is highly annoying. I had to have up to 6 hours training in my own time according to my contract. Check what it says in the contract
