To think I should've got this checked?

DD (5) -

Was shopping today, went into a store and DD banged head off one of the metal clothes holders, it was her height, she's slipped and fell onto it and cut her head as it's scraped on the way down, there was a small bump which seems to have gone down now, the incident happened at 9.30 this morning.

Took her into boots and grabbed a plaster and some medi wipes just to clean it.

DP is very calm, and insisted it would be fine as it was more a scrape than a full force head bang. ( He seen the incident happen )

I do suffer with anxiety so in these situations I do rely on partner being the level headed one.

DD has been fine since, ate normally, played normally. Has been a little clumsy, but isn't falling clear randomly or losing balance. ( apart from when spinning around ) no vomitting, nothing out of the ordinary apart from maybe being a little bit more touchier than usual.

Obviously bedtime is here and I can't quite settle down, I'm worrying and fear I won't end up sleeping tonight.

I'm kicking myself and on the verge of calling 111, but I fear with it being almost 11 hours since the incident they won't offer much advice.

I also read online that side of head was the worst place to hit your head and this has sent my anxiety into full force.

I'm usually okay with minor accidents, but head bangs I seem to lose all my sense and knowledge.

Thank you.

Will attach pics below.

For reference, it was one of these metal clothes holders.

Looks fine to me. Try not to worry

I'd say she's fine. You'd be a little touchy too if you fell over and scraped your head. It's probably a little sore. Just dab some Savlon on it and it'll feel better by tomorrow.

Paythosebitchesnomind · 05/08/2024 20:16

Call 111 - The head injury pathway is long and covers everything - as long as there is no dent, no vomiting, loss of vision or coordination then you will probably just get a clinician call back

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/08/2024 20:18

It looks fine but if it'll ease your worries, speak to 111. It's also worth mentioning to the store.

It sounds to me like she'll be perfectly fine. I know what it's like, I also worry too much about my DS. I think you made the right decision not to make her wait for hours to be seen by a doctor, when it's mostly a scrape, no forceful blow to the head, no loss of consciousness, no obvious neurological signs or symptoms, and she seems to be feeling fine. A simple concussion will pass on it's own (and seems very unlikely in this scenario), and the mechanism of injury you're describing doesn't seem powerful enough to cause a more serious head injury at all.

Hey, thanks guys you've been really helpful.

The reason I didn't already call 111 is we had a serious head bang last year ( cut head open, wet herself during the fall ) drastic egg on top of head. And they told me just to monitor and only take her to be seen if she started vomiting or lost consciousness.

So initially I thought the same would happen in this case.

She never fell from a high height luckily and wasn't running at speed either, I think she was trying to show us some clothes she had seen, and then just lost footing, she did try and stop the fall but the corner of the bar caught her head still.

Couple more questions - is it ok to let her sleep now? I doubt I'll be sleeping much tonight anyway

Also - would you say this location classes as temple or still forehead?

Also whenever is trying to smile or wink, will then complain that her eye/head hurts..... ( where the scratch is ) is this related to the obvious soreness she'll be having due to the hit?

It looks fine. As you say 111 will just say what you already know, to monitor her.
