Due to travel to the NW of England for a week - would you still go?

We are due to travel to the NW of England to explore the area and visit a few towns (Preston, Chorley, Lancaster, Lytham st Anne’s and Manchester) with our children by public transport. With all of the rioting (I know there is some elsewhere in the country), I feel really apprehensive about it. Would you still go? Is it as bad as the newspapers are showing? Keeping in mind we will be travelling by train and bus, so may pass through places that are being effected badly by the riots.

YABU - still go.

YANBU - don’t go.

I would still go. If you have children, you’re more likely to be out during the day when the riots aren’t happening, and they’re not occurring everywhere. Just make sure you’re abreast of local news.

I think I'd redirect my holiday to travelling around the lakes and rural Cumbria. Much more beautiful anyway.

LlynTegid · 05/08/2024 13:06

I'd go. Perhaps change the order of where I would be, especially at the weekend.

MyDogsPaws · 05/08/2024 13:07

I’m Interested to know peoples thought in this too, my dc supposed to be going to Blackpool with their dad this week and I’m a bit worried about, their dad said he will postpone until next week but not sure if this is an overreaction!

Mademetoxic · 05/08/2024 13:08

I live around one of those places you mentioned. The world has not stopped. Everyone is going about their daily business.

PieonaBarm · 05/08/2024 13:09

Yes. Please come and visit us. The Policing response particularly in Lancashire has been robust.

Octavia64 · 05/08/2024 13:13

I have just come home from visiting my mum in Preston. Didn't see anything at all.

CurbsideProphet · 05/08/2024 13:26

There have been no issues in the Chorley area or in Lytham. I don't think Preston either. I would probably head to Cumbria, but that's just me preferring the calm of the mountains and lakes.

Mabelface · 05/08/2024 13:27

Went through Manchester on Saturday afternoon. Trams in the centre were temporarily stopped, but the trouble was dealt with swiftly. Everyone was going about their lives, just a larger police presence.

Toasticles · 05/08/2024 13:28

The riot in Manchester was about 50 blokes.
I live in the suburbs and not heard a peep.

Doseofreality · 05/08/2024 13:30

There are many, many people happily living in the North West right now merrily getting on with their everyday lives.

Namechangencncnc · 05/08/2024 13:31

These places are all fine. Manchester and Preston there was a bit more trouble but it appears over.
Lytham, Leyland, Chorley, Lancaster - all fine today

Crabwoman · 05/08/2024 13:42

I live in the NW and have just taken a 2 hour train journey across the NW with a few changes. There were people of all races on the train, including a group of young Muslim women, and everything was calm.

It was business as usual, just a normal Monday morning, albeit with more of a visible police presence (though maybe I just noticed it more).

I expect there will be more riots this weekend, but I'm hopeful that police intelligence will know where they will be planned and be able to guide the public and put a stop to it or contain it quickly.

Barring a complete breakdown of Law and Order, I will be taking my kids into Liverpool city centre this weekend and won't be cancelling any plans.

x2boys · 05/08/2024 13:50

I live in Bolton apparently we had riots yesterday I heard nothing it's business as usual.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 05/08/2024 13:53

Preston managed to gather about 10 people for the "protest" it was a damp squip. You'll be fine up here in the NW

Babbahabba · 05/08/2024 14:07

It's not Gaza. Of course it's safe. Millions of people live in the north west and are going about their daily business.

ExtraOnions · 05/08/2024 14:12

It’s fine …it’s due to rain anyway, they never riot in the rain.

Lancaster was the same - maybe more than 10, but it was a pretty small group, and the "anti protestors" group far outnumbered them and spent most of the time laughing at them. Police were there in good numbers, but as far as I know, no violence, no damage, no arrests. After an hour or two, everyone went about their business.

Thanks, all reassuring responses.
I’ve only had the newspapers and news to go by.
I’m worried about staying at a hotel after reading they set fire to a Holiday Inn.

Can you clarify? Which should I avoid on the weekend?

Me too , and to be honest I'm getting a bit fed up with all the threads on here saying thing like the North is terrible, it's all full of racist, there are riots everywhere.

But not in any of the places you mentioned. And not in holiday inns that holidaymakers were staying in.

Yep like there have never been riots in London ....

OhmygodDont · 05/08/2024 14:24

We traveled to Hartlepool the day after their riots and no issues.

Ghostofborleyrectory · 05/08/2024 14:27

There has already been a protest in Lancaster. The right wing were incredibly outnumbered and there was singing rather than anything being broken!
