To think the MPs should come back from their holidays?

If I was an MP and my constituency was being burnt and looted I'd probably come back off holidays and try to help sort that out.

P.s. how is stealing crocs a form of protest?

Back in the day looters went for big tvs. Then it was trainers Crocs is a new one on me!

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 05/08/2024 12:26

What do local MPs (not relevant ministers etc) actually do to sort things like this out?

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 05/08/2024 12:39

There's an emergency COBRA meeting today. To be attended by people who are actually in a position to do something.
All MP's would do, if they were recalled, is hold a parliamentary debate. They would all stand up to make repetitive speeches about how bad it all is. Then their staffer would put the footage out on social media. And everyone would pat themselves on the back.
I think an engaged local MP can sometimes prevent local tensions from spilling over into rioting.
But, tbh, the current situation is well beyond that sort of thing and, in any case, seems to be centrally orchestrated, making COBRA the more effective response.

What do you think an MP will do @marshlellow that a local authority or council can't do in the same instance?

PortiasBiscuit · 05/08/2024 12:44

Poor sods, every single year someone wants to pull them back for something. What do you think they’re going to do? Man the barricades? Or wander about shaking hands and getting in the way of clearing up.
Let’s have them nice and refreshed and ready to start the new term in September eh?

Whammyammy · 05/08/2024 12:45

Unless the MPs are going to don riot gear and take to the streets, what else can they do.

Not even real crocs!!! Show zone knock off crocs 🤣

I really don't see the point of recalling Parliament - as pps have said, what are they actually going to do?

Local MPs in affected constituencies should be present locally, definitely.

I saw Shoezone, Greggs and lush being looted on social media. One idiot was spotted with some gingerbread men and cookies from Greggs, a Lush giftser and some phone cases from a phone shop.

LlynTegid · 05/08/2024 12:50

Unless there is a proposal to change the law in any way, I don't see the purpose of a recall.

FitAt50 · 05/08/2024 12:51

MPs are not allowed off on holidays. Parliament is off on holiday but MPs are still working in their constituencys. I saw mine on Friday.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 05/08/2024 12:52

Unless they are needed to pass new emergency laws, I think that it’s not necessary. MPs don’t literally go on holiday , they may go away but also focus on local work. I’d say that the MPs from affected areas shouldn’t be in London - that’s no better than Tommy Robinson who is currently on holiday in Cyprus.

Edited

Agreed.

Just because Parliament isn’t sitting doesn’t mean MPs are ‘on holiday’. Most of them will be in their constituencies doing casework, local meetings etc. I’m sure most of them are very engaged with what’s currently going on.

Startingagainandagain · 05/08/2024 12:59

The PM and the relevant ministers just need to get on with sorting this out.

I don't see the point of recalling parliament and having endless debates when what is really needed is swift action to get these thugs off the streets and in front of a judge.

MojoMoon · 05/08/2024 13:02

How do you know all the MPs in Sunderland, Hartlepool, Middleborough, Hull, Liverpool etc are all on holiday?

Parliament isn't sitting but that doesn't mean all MPs are on a beach. In fact, since parliament is not sitting they are more likely to be in their consistencies at the moment than normally.

Not really sure what they do to sort anything out but good point. Maybe stand in a picture with a sad face with local community leaders?

Oh I thought they all went on annual leave when they weren't in parliament. Great if they're on the ground

I'm sure those with School-aged Children will go away for some of this time but Parliament is in Recess; MPs are still working.
