To find watching the 100 m sprint a bit meh?

Love love love watching the Olympics but find the hullabaloo surrounding the shortest sprint a bit odd. 9-10 seconds of athletes running almost the same speed is a bit underwhelming no? Events like the triathlon I find so much more interesting lots of different stories within each race. 800 m yes please, 100 m not so much. Anyone else?

Watching the kayak now. It's definitely one I'd like to see ordinary people having a go for comparison/a laugh.

I absolutely loved the 100m last night. Loved the light show build up, the purple track, the showmanship, the tightness of the race. All would have won gold in, I think, it was Barcelona. And Noah Lyles 😍

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 05/08/2024 15:28

I agree it's not the most interesting. I like watching the slightly longer ones best - 800 & 1500m.

LlynTegid · 05/08/2024 15:31

I think the race's long history compared to many other events has a part. Been in every Olympics- Harold Abrahams, Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis and Usain Bolt just four of those I could name without looking up the list.

MrHarleyQuin · 05/08/2024 15:31

Me too. I hate how it's so hyped compared with other events where athletes turn up and run, very fast, for considerably longer but without all the showboating and poncing about beforehand before running for less than ten seconds. Meh.

My brother and I were competitive athletes when we were young, he was a sprinter and I ran middle distance and cross country. I used to love the Olympics track events.
Sadly so many Olympic 100m finalists have turned out, in subsequent years, to be drug cheats that it has tainted that event for me. Now I can't watch it without feeling cynical about it.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/08/2024 15:38

I much prefer individual sports that are visually spectacular, over the traditional track and field. Gymnastics, diving, all the new ones like skateboard, BMX, canoeing, surfing. So much fun to watch.

Agree with a pp that swimming is quite dull, and I'm not into team sports on the whole, so I don't bother with hockey etc.

edwinbear · 05/08/2024 15:45

@MrHarleyQuin fair bit of showboating going on with Ingebrigtsen/Kerr though! (Which makes for great telly).

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/08/2024 16:04

It would be much more exciting if they were 'teamed up' randomly and it was undertaken as a three-legged race.

It cheapens it for me. The Olympics should be about mastery, control, and sportsmanship, not a pissing contest.

I love pretty much all of it - dressage hold and boxing and probably could add weightlifting

I so enjoyed watching the cycling , gymnastics etc - after a little bit I give up on the swimming as it's a bit seen that before

I have seen loads whilst Ironing and in evening when back from work - just can't believe it's 12 years since London

BeaLola · 05/08/2024 16:15

Except golf dressage and boxing that should have read

newrubylane · 05/08/2024 16:37

Yes, it feels a bit anticlimactic to me. It's only just started and then it's done.

Gettingannoyednow · 05/08/2024 16:40

Going to get flak for this, but I'm just not terribly interested in men's sport.

Although the track cycling is just starting, open water swimming to come and lots more.

I was hearing on the radio the other day that, for LA 2028, the US is thinking of starting with the track and field in week 1 as it should boost the medals for the US and generate better viewing figures early on .

Ooh yes, open water swimming is also good, I'll look out for that. Interesting point about rejigging the schedule for LA. My DS and I were looking at China being ahead of the US in the medal table last week, and I pointed out that China had already done many of their best sports but the US hadn't.

The second week of the Olympics is all a bit meh to me. All the fun stuff is in the first week - gymnastics, trampoline, diving, BMX, triathlon in our house. This week's endless heats running around the track and people chucking various objects about is way less interesting.

I haven’t watched any of it this year, but for some reason in the past I’ve enjoyed the chucking stuff about bits. It’s such an odd and pointless activity, but somehow quite entertaining.

I agree, I find women's sport much more interesting.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 05/08/2024 19:12

I agree. It's deadly dull. The tactics and jockeying for position in the 1500m is much more fun.

brunettemic · 05/08/2024 19:13

It’s almost like different people like watching different things. Personally, the sheer speed they run 100m at blows my mind and the drama of a finish like yesterdays is exciting.
