Way too much for broccoli

I was walking past a dim sum restaurant that has just opened in my town.
I checked the prices and was unimpressed to see that a dish of broccoli is £13!
I had a quick look at the menu in a few local places and it’s about £5/£6.

AIBU to think that a portion of broccoli should not be £13 when meat dishes at the same place cost around the same amount.

Did they force you at gunpoint to pay it?

ExitPursuedByABare · 04/08/2024 21:39

I’m not a meat eater but object to paying £15 fir a cauliflower steak.

Was wondering when someone would say that - first reply!

Of course not. It just seems excessive for vegetables and at odds with the rest of the menu.

Broccoli is quite expensive in Hong Kong and is considered a luxury by some.

This menu leads with Cantonese characters so I’m presuming is an authentic place - maybe they are valuing the dish as they would expect to in HK.

But to be quite frank @cruciferousVeg you are being unreasonable, because I think anyone could come on here and say anything to you explaining this, and you’d probably still want to moan about the price of the vegetable dish. So crack on.

I fucking love broccoli.

<my greedy arse misses point of thread>

You're not wrong OP, in my book. 13 quid for the broccoli and garlic, plus another 4 quid for the boiled rice? A big 500g head of broccoli in morrisons is less than a quid at the moment, the garlic would cost pennies, and given that they probably buy 50 kilo bags of rice wholesale, the mark up on your main course is astronomical!

(But if I was ravenous walking past I'd very likely pay it 😳)

Maybe the restaurant could stick your patronising list and Narnia putdown in a pan with the broccoli and boil the fuck out of it 💡

@Farting @baroqueandblue

I'm sorry but that little exchange between you two just then was one of the funniest things I've read on MN today. Thanks for giving me a giggle

I didn’t invent the list it’s real. And you’re right, it’s patronising, it signifies how those in control regard anyone with the temerity to want to run a business.

Which is

With contempt. So enjoy your broccoli while you can afford it. It won’t last.
