Not really AIBU, but posted for traffic.

I am experiencing numbness in both my little finger tips, on the right hand the numbness also starting on the ring finger.

I feel perfectly well, but very concerned.

I've been to the doctors and they're doing blood tests, but I'm dreadfully worried.

Has anyone experienced this?

Cubital tunnel syndrome, similar to carpal tunnel but affects the little and ring fingers instead. I have had it during pregnancy twice

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/08/2024 06:38

Yes, got sent for nerve conduction studies which were normal. Then thought I was spending a lot of time resting that elbow on my desk when at my laptop. Stopped doing that and it went away.

dontstopmenowimhavingagoodtime · 04/08/2024 06:39

@polkadotpixie did you have it in both hands?

I do that a lot!!

Mine was cubital tunnel syndrome.

And it was little and ring fingers? Did you have it in both hands at the same time?

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/08/2024 06:47

Mine was little and ring fingers. I’m more prone to it in my left hand than right hand. But does affect both. It’s fine most of the time now but I do get it when I’m cycling and sometimes the day after a long cycle ride. I also think lying in bed typing on my iPad with bent elbows doesn’t help.

More my left hand but sometimes in my right too

Lemons1571 · 04/08/2024 07:05

I had this. It developed into random tingling patches all over (mostly on arms / legs / face), twitches, disequilibrium, intermittent numbness in feet, and lots of other random symptoms.

Have had two bouts in 18 years, each lasted about 6 months before very gradually tailing off.

Never did find out a cause, despite full body MRI’s, hearing tests for inner ear etc (all clear).

PeloMom · 04/08/2024 07:19

As per @CormorantStrikesBack . I had similar issue and my dr said for ring fingers and little fingers the issue comes from too much pressure on elbow or leaning on the arm (I do that when I read).

NoJamSlags · 04/08/2024 07:26

As others have said, numbness and tingling in the ring finger and little finger are common symptoms of ulnar nerve entrapment. It’s usually treated with physio.

That must've been very worrying at the time.

I have had numbness on both little fingers and going down the side of the little fingers and hand.
Physio said it is a trapped nerve in C7 (I think). I was given exercises which really helped. Took a few weeks to go.
That was 12 years ago & it was likely caused by my work.
Randomly it happened again this spring and I resumed the exercises and it went v quickly.
I suggest you find a physio.

It was. I am reasonably sure it might recur in the future, but I’m not declining with any serious illness so I’ve given up worrying. Hopefully my story has reassured you a little.

PearTreeBoat · 04/08/2024 08:43

I had what I thought was just a trapped nerve in my right shoulder which was causing numbness and tingling in my right hand.
Went to doctors who did a cervical x-ray and turns out I have 2 severely compressed discs and complete loss of the c curve in my neck.

Got MRI and the nerve condition studies booked in to determine how soon I need disc replacement surgery.

Chances are yours is nothing quite so serious but I would definitely urge you to get it checked out properly sooner rather than later. I've had numerous trapped nerves and pulled muscles over the years and never thought too much about it other than getting old (I'm 45), if the compressed discs had been picked up a couple of years ago I wouldn't be looking at surgery now.

I have the same -
have a look at Functional Neurological Syndrome/symptoms if you haven't already, my neurologist recommended this site:

I had this twice! Ulner nerve entrapment. Lasted for months then just realised one day it had gone. Same two fingers as you.

On both hands or just can I ask?

It’s your ulnar nerve which supplies the little and outside half of your ring finger.
There are several places it can be compressed. Occasionally at the wrist , most commonly at the elbow. You need to think if you do anything where you are putting pressure on your elbows a lot. Arthritis where there is inflammation and swelling can do it too.

I sometimes wake up with this because of the position I have slept in . Not worrying

Misthios · 04/08/2024 09:45

Get your thyroid tested!!! Carpal tunnel can be a symptom.

Catza · 04/08/2024 09:57

It’s not life threatening. Likely, ulnar-nerve related and is relatively common and harmless. I’ve had ever since I “retired” as a massage therapist in my early 30s. Overuse of hands is the likely culprit in my case. It rarely bothers me unless I read in bed (bending your elbows and raising hands brings it on).

OP already gave bloods, they usually look at thyroid function as part of that.

Thank you, I'm on a computer all day, I need to look at wrist supports I think.
