To think they should have provided water?

Maybe I’m expecting too much.

My train (2 hour journey) was cancelled because of a trespasser and then it reopened but it had double the amount of people due to earlier cancelled trains.

The train kept constantly stopping (they did no announcement as to why) it was getting more and more delayed, so many people crammed in one space, heat and ave, no air con.

It then got stopped again because of another trespasser. In all a 2 hour journey took 4.5 hours. It was horrendous.

Definitely too much to expect with our current rail system, OP.

I always carry a bottle of water and a snack or two when I'm travelling, just seems like common sense.

Fullyflavoured · 02/08/2024 10:09

Surely most people carry their own water on hot days?

ouch321 · 02/08/2024 10:10

I wouldn't be so worried about the water but hopefully you had access to a washroom?!?!

Marchitectmummy · 02/08/2024 10:15

They probably wouldn't have sufficient water or space to go down the train with it.

It's unfortunate but delays on trains happen, and do happen. Its better they stop the train to remove a trespasser than mow them down even though it is an inconvenience.

In future always make sure you have water with you, also in car journeys. People get stuck on all transport in any country.

Edingril · 02/08/2024 10:17

Wouldn't the water have to be delivered?

MissMoneyFairy · 02/08/2024 10:22

I always take my own water and snacks. I don't know what the rules are about overcrowding but delays happen and unless it's an urgent journey zi wait until everything has calmed down

Anonym00se · 02/08/2024 10:22

Yes. I’ve been on trains that have had a few hours delay and they’ve given water and a box of snacks.

Branster · 02/08/2024 10:24

Where would 'they' get this magic water from to address the long delay and unusual overcrowding due to (2 separate!) unforeseen circumstances.
Also, during unusually hot weather, people should carry a bottle of water, which would have helped a bit unless the bottle was empty by the time the passenger got on the train.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/08/2024 10:27

Was there a food carriage/ cart on the train? Were any of the stops at stations? I have been on a train that gave out water when delayed because it stopped in the middle of nowhere and there was no food carriage/ cart to buy from but have also been on trains where the delays were at stations and so it was possible to get off the train and buy food if needed. On a hot day like yesterday I would be expecting people to already be carrying water before getting onto the train.

pinkdelight · 02/08/2024 10:28

People should have their own water on hot days, not relinquish responsibility. If they don't take any, I'd assume they can cope for a few hours without it. it's not hiking across the Sahara.

SallyWD · 02/08/2024 10:33

This keeps happening these days! I've had this experience many times in the last 6 months. Dreadful. One train I took was supposed to arrive at 7pm but we got home at 3am. We had children with us and only packed enough water to last us until 7pm. In this case they did give out some bottles of water, however there didn't see to be enough for everyone and they only gave it to the people that asked.

A washroom on a train? You're bloody lucky to get a clean toilet.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 02/08/2024 10:38

I've been on a few long distance trains where the AC has conked out, they've always provided water for those in affected carriages.

Most people will of course carry their own water, but if you're at the end of a long day of work you may not have had the opportunity to refill.

paradisecityx · 02/08/2024 10:39

My OH is a train manager on high speed trains from London.
It's amazing the amount of people who leave the house without so much as a drink knowing they're going on a long journey.
People with children have been on the train for a 2-3hr journey and haven't brought so much as a drink or snack for the child.

I take a drink with me everywhere I go.

SeeSeeRider · 02/08/2024 10:40

You should be able to get the cost of your ticket back, under Delay Repay. If it was a single, you'd get the whole amount, if a return, you'd get half.

Surely most people carry their own water on hot days?

But most don't plan to take a canister of it, mine would run out after 2 hours in the heat, do you plan for a journey to take a whole day instead of 2 hours when it's meant to be 2 hours?

Mamadothehump · 02/08/2024 10:43

Take your own bloody water!!!

What if you bring enough for 2 hours bit not enough for 4? I don't pack a massive rucksack for a 2 hour journey.

Lilysgoneshopping · 02/08/2024 10:48

You're lucky to actually find train services actually running, never mind providing water.
A couple of weeks ago every single train from Preston to Blackpool was cancelled, lack of train crew apparently

ouch321 · 02/08/2024 10:10

I wouldn't be so worried about the water but hopefully you had access to a washroom?!?!

Trains do have 'washrooms' so that wouldn't have been a problem.

KreedKafer · 02/08/2024 10:50

AgnesX · 02/08/2024 10:35

A washroom on a train? You're bloody lucky to get a clean toilet.

A 'washroom' is just what Americans call the toilets. If it's got a toilet and a sink to wash your hands, that's a washroom.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/08/2024 10:52

I think it depends what kind of train. Shorter metro trains do not have any buffet/cafe facilities so where would they get this water from?

On a longer inter city type train that had a cafe maybe I would expect water but they may not have enough on board for everyone.

Just in case people think this is a UK thing, a few years ago we got a local train in France - no air con, no cafe (not that we expected one!) due to 40 degree heat a 45 min journey took neraly 2 hours. No water was forthcoming. Luckily we had packed our own.

Reugny · 02/08/2024 10:54

On TFL services there are notices at stations which includes the Elizabeth line and London overground to carry your own water on hot days.

The Elizabeth line and London overground often have long delays and trains cancelled at the last moment including where you are chucked out some random station and have to wait an hour or more for the next train.

mitogoshi · 02/08/2024 11:00

Depends on the train service, there's no buffet car or trolley service nowadays on our intercity train to London (they get off at our stop as its express from that point, 90 minutes though) so they won't have water to give out.
