To think I've been scammed

I had a spare ticket to an event that I decided to sell, couldn't sell it through Facebook groups so eventually I settled on sending an email around my company and found a buyer through there.

The ticket arrived yesterday and I sent a screenshot to the buyer (without the QR code and sent across my bank details for payment. She said she would pay me today - today arrives and she hasn't paid me but she sends me a screenshot of my bank details on her bank payment page and says she's about to pay. She's on the phone to me as I send the ticket and then she hangs up. She's ignored all my messages since then.

I sold the ticket for £200. So a pretty significant chunk of money but not enough for the police to bother. I'm going to have to just suck it up and accept that I've been scammed, aren't I?

I'd report the ticket as stolen if you can so she can't use it.

SuperBatFace · 01/08/2024 19:25

I know this is very unhelpful but can I ask why you sent her the ticket when you'd not received the money into your bank account?

Unfortunately it's a Grand Prix ticket so downloadable and printable, it's not an option 😩

Because I trusted that someone I worked with wouldnt scam me like that

SuperBatFace · 01/08/2024 19:26

Ah. You know her? Well that makes it easy then doesn't it?

FakeMiddleton · 01/08/2024 19:26

I'd be telling HR

SuperBatFace · 01/08/2024 19:27

Email her at work and cc her boss in

Message her again saying you will be sending an open company email to everyone who works there unless she pays

Stand by her desk until she does it

Threaten to do the above if she works at another site

You have some options if you know who she is

I'd be telling HR

I'm just not sure they'd be interested as it's out of working hours and it's me being naive about selling things

ComeOnThenFanny · 01/08/2024 19:27

Threaten to tell everyone at work! She surely can't imagine she'd get away with it when you could tell everybody?

WafflingDreamer · 01/08/2024 19:28

I'd be really tempted to email her via work and accidentally cc it to everyone

NameChangeForParis · 01/08/2024 19:29

I’d be petty AF and contact their line manager (depending on position in company) asking if they have additional contact details as XX number/email aren’t working and you’re concerned for their welfare as you were in the middle of an online transaction and they suddenly went silent. Super worried they are okay as they weren’t able to even finish what they said they were in the middle of 😉

She's just shown she's not trustworthy.

suburberphobe · 01/08/2024 19:30

Email her at work and cc her boss in

This ^^

Edwardbear1 · 01/08/2024 19:33

Small claims court against her? If you work with her you must be able to get her details

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 01/08/2024 19:33

OP go through small claims court.

Honestly so many people think this will take hours of paperwork, showing up to court and paying loads of money. It doesn't. The only thing you need to find out is her address-is this possible?

Send her a letter that has to be signed for stating you need the money by x date or you will be pursuing her through small claims

If she doesn't respond then do so. It takes about 30 mins to fill out the paperwork and all you need is any record of the agreement. And your follow up messages asking for the money. It'll cost you £35 and you'll get it back

If she then doesn't pay you it'll go to debt collectors pretty quickly

You'll find she probably caves well before then!

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 01/08/2024 19:34

Start a small claim and tell everyone you work with what she did

NotTooOldPaul · 01/08/2024 19:36

I'd get the police involved. £200 is a lot of money

Lmnop22 · 01/08/2024 19:43

If you know who she is just ask in person, she surely won’t be able to say sorry I’m scamming you to your face and you can wait whilst she transfers the money on her phone.

Ask as loudly as possible with others around you to hear. Appalling behaviour to buy a ticket off someone in your company and just not pay though, some people have no shame!! 😳

This is what I'm surprised by, why would you do it to someone from work?

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 01/08/2024 19:47

Of course HR would care!! I would find her in person at work and tell her loudly that the money didn't arrive in your account yet.

imnotsickbutimnotwell · 01/08/2024 19:52

message with bank details and say you have not received the payment and if it’s not received within 24 hours you will be forced to take further action which will involve the police.

After 24 hours contact HR and ask for their advice.

Try to get hold of her address, send her a letter before action then small claims.

Yes, much better to do in person rather than via email.

I would march her to the nearest cashpoint tbh.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/08/2024 19:59

I'd keep trying to contact them. If no response then name and shame. Tell her colleagues in her team, her mates, your mates, the directors...
It's out of order and if you work in same place I'm sure she can be shamed into paying.
From a company optics pov it's not great for people to be able to get away with stealing expensive items from their colleagues!
This happened to me once when I lent something to a colleague. She tried to blank me and not give it back but another couple of colleagues convinced her to pay up.

They might not be interested, but hopefully the threat of it by mentioning it in front of them will be enough to shock her into paying

They should be very interested that one of their employees is a thief. Go to the police and get a crime reference number. Share with employers
