What a pair of male a***holes from the BBC again

The Male British commentator on the womens coxless four at the PAris Olympics - has completely and utterly blamed the fact they got silver not gold, on the fact that there is a 38 yr old woman, mother of 3 in the boat. He said her ability to push and her endurance has gone down because of her age and that is the reason they lost, she was being carried by them - WTAF.

They lost by 0.18 of a second to the Dutch

They should be ashamed of what they just said. She got seat raced to get her place and she made it. What an odious pair of men

If there had been someone better on the squad then presumably she would have got the spot instead. And given that they got the silver and weren't far off getting the gold, we can hardly say that they are an underwhelming squad.

Well done to them, and shame on the presenters.

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 01/08/2024 18:34

So this was all about nothing!?

I agree with the above posters... This isn't gender specific. You hear it regularly in football matches with the older players, how established,m how at 40 they're past it and need to retire because they can't keep up with the younger ones.

Honestly, I think they're right. I'm 40 and I groan getting out of a chair, don't build muscle as quickly, lose fat slower... I think a younger sportsperson (gender-neutral term, woo!) should have the spot.

Dare I say that you're not as fit as Olympian Helen Glover?! 🙄🙄🙄

Except they were stating a fact ie her age and its likely effect on stamina etc.
Shame on the OP for misleading so many people, I'd say.
Where is she btw?

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 01/08/2024 18:57

OP has scuttled off to presumably get offended by more perfectly normal discussions by athletes acting as commentators in the sport they competed in....

uneffingbelievable · 01/08/2024 19:04

They discussed her age, mentioned she was a married mother of 3 and that her endurance was starting to tell. They did comment that endurance goes down with age - but this woman raced and won her place.
They also said -they were carrying a 38 yr old woman

Just unnecessary comments -mention her age by all means, mention it does get hrder as you get older but to say the rest of the tem ere carrying and to imply if she was not there it would have been gold -really placed the loss of a gold on her beig in the boat - no one else

OP posts:
LuluBlakey1 · 01/08/2024 19:05

I saw that event but I didn't hear him say that.

uneffingbelievable · 01/08/2024 19:07

The comments were unnecessary and blaming her age on the loss not acceptable

Andy Murrys age is mentioned but not the reaos they may or may not lose -

carrying a 38 yr old means she was dead weight and that is not acceptable. Rowing is v competitive and she would have been dropped v quickly if she was not making the grade.

Apologies for the late reply -I am a mother, not being carried by my team and delivering the same as everyone else

I'm going to need to watch the clip myself.

Is it on iplayer?

Prapsfound · 01/08/2024 19:13

It’s annoying but did you hear the World Cup (men’s) commentary…constant comments about their age. As soon as they are over around 30 that’s all the commentators discuss…so much that I started getting offended as a person of (a lot) over 30.

NewName24 · 01/08/2024 19:14

Have to agree with virtually everyone.

Especially the "if you go looking for it, you can find offense in anything" post. It seems that is what the OP is doing.
How can you dispute that in the overwhelming majority of sports, 38 means you are past peak performance at world competitions ? She is incredible to have won the place in the squad. the team are brilliant to have done so well. The commentators are there to share their knowledge and offer thoughts and opinions.

brunettemic · 01/08/2024 19:15

That isn’t actually what was said. It’s also true, a 38 year old is highly likely to not be at the same peak as someone younger. Helen Glover is a good example, she used to row the 2-, which is inherently harder (less stable, power to weight ratio is different etc) and is now in the 4-. They had to move the boat around to suit her after she initially struggled coming into the crew (they went from gold to bronze in the worlds, albeit with another injury).

PensivePencil · 01/08/2024 19:27

Does anyone have a link? I’d be interested to watch it? I watched the coverage on bbc but didn’t hear this discussion.

69pbiryani · 01/08/2024 19:37

That is not what was said. And the commentators were not both male. They did mention her age, and said that the sprint finish is the first thing to drop with age. They didn't 'blame her age on the loss'. That doesn't even make sense. Her age is due to the passing of time.
Her children were only mentioned in the context of them being proud of her.
I'm not sure her being married was mentioned but I may be wrong.

LightFull · 01/08/2024 19:50

We all know it's a fact that sporting prowess diminishes with age

It's just a fact

LightFull · 01/08/2024 19:51

The fact they got a silver is incredible

And there was obviously no one better to take her place

She helped win us a silver which is absolutely fantastic and without her they'd have likely not even won a medal

I remember absolutely hating Clare Balding in 2016 making a hideous comment about Rebecca Adlington when she didn't win a gold medal

It grates on me now seeing her presenting next to Arlington knowing she said what she said

She can't take that back

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 01/08/2024 22:15

They absolutely do talk about all athletes ages affecting how well they do

I missed Murray's final match unfortunately but I wouldn't be surprised if someone mentioned his age as being a factor in his defeat. And if they haven't yet they will

Those kinds of tiny fractions of seconds are normal in sports. At the elite level even tiny differences can be significant.

Athletes into their late 30s do start to lose ability.

And as a mother, I will say it can very much impact performance, I think especially if you have your kids older. To affects your body for one thing, your ligaments for example - but also it can be difficult to regain your muscle mass after pregnancy when you are older.

TempestTost · 01/08/2024 22:23

"Carrying her" means they think she was the weakest link in the team. Are they wrong?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 01/08/2024 22:28

I heard a commentator tonight say Andy Murray's age and body had let him down, it wasn't even said in a negative way, it's true to an extent, 37/38 is way way past prime for Olympians

TizerorFizz · 01/08/2024 22:39

@uneffingbelievable You need to know more about rowing. These 4 women were unbeaten this year, until today. Sir Matthew Pinsent and Dame Katherine Grainger are multi medal winning rowers! They are absolutely entitled to have an opinion! They are totally knowledgable!

As for Helen Glover and the coxless 4 - they got a tardy start. The Dutch didn’t. To get ahead we needed a higher stroke rate than the Dutch. The tv graphics showed our team matched the Dutch but were never pushing the stroke rate high enough. British rowing need to know why that race went as if did. They were favourites to win and Pinsent and Grainger were shocked.

Cannot say about radio but Helen Glover was Stroke and setting the tempo. It was not ramped up enough to win. It’s also a fact that after 3 dc and taking loads of time off, fitting training around dc, this was a huge ask! Onwards and upwards for the others.

LuluBlakey1 · 01/08/2024 22:42

I watched it again on catch-up. The conversation/commentary you reported never happened. You have completely misinterpreted it.

HelenaWaiting · 01/08/2024 14:52

What the OP claims is absolutely not what was said.

I think people hear what they want to hear when they're looking to be offended.
