AIBU to put a mousetrap outside my house?

A few weeks ago I started to hear scratching in the walls of my kitchen. Put some humane mousetraps down but didn’t catch anything. Then on Monday I opened the door to let the dog out and a mouse ran in! Luckily it got caught in the trap that day so I released it a few fields away that evening on the dog walk. Tonight I’ve gone out to get the laundry off the line and there’s two mice on the wall! Needless to say, the laundry is staying out over night! I was thinking about putting some of the humane traps out around the kitchen door to try and catch the mice, but I’m wondering if it’s totally pointless since it’s outside so there’s bound to be hundreds of mice there? I don’t want them digging through the wall into my house. I’ve found two holes that could be them, but I don’t want to seal them up with the mice inside because then they’ll definitely try and dig out? What do I do? I don’t want to kill them, would mice traps work?

Assuming your house is of standard construction I don’t think mice can dig through brick! But in answer to your question no I wouldn’t put traps outside. Get some steel wool and block the holes, then leave your humane trap inside for a few days, just incase.

I would have got your washing in though! The mice are hardly going to do anything other than run away.

@myfavouritemutant my house is about 500 years old so I’m not so sure! They’re living near the drain so I’m worried they somehow come in through the drain pipes?

I've been researching this for myself as I've been experiencing mice. you can simply put steel wire wool in all the holes like this one: https://pestbuddy.co.uk/products/rodent-proofing-wire-wool

I would also use sealant or expanding foam - not sure if that's preferable given your house is 500 years old.

It's unlikely that they come through the drainpipes as mice don't like water. Hate to say it but it's possibly rats.

@tobyiana thanks, luckily for me they’ve gone for now! I didn’t want to use the wool in case I sealed them in. I did put humane traps outside to see what I was dealing with. I checked them several times a day for weeks and never caught anything. I haven’t heard anything since either so they’ve seemingly moved on
