Trying to donate books

21 large boxes full. Some v new, some older but basically all literary classics.
So far, local hospixe has said they will charge £500 to come and collect (it's a 2 hour round trip for them).
What else can I do with them?
(I have a condition whereby I'm advised not to lift over 15kg as well so makes it tricky)

I use Ziffit because they come and collect them and pay for them too. You just need to download the app and get some boxes to pack them in. They reject some books so they go in the nearest book recycling bin or if they’re good hardbacks I drop them in the Shelter shop. I buy a lot of books, nearly all second hand but don’t really want to keep them. The odd time when I want to reread a book I buy it again; it costs less than a cup of coffee usually. I got rid of masses when I moved and don’t want them to pile up again.

Thanks, do you have to give them the titles etc?
Or just the volume?

Join the local FB group for the area and see if anyone local has any ideas

Oh I see it. You sell individually and need barcodes.
Many are pre 1950 and also I don't have time.

Scan as many as you can onto we buy books etc., and then just put the rest in the BHF book bank

whereisthelifethatirecognize · 31/07/2024 15:34

Facebook marketplace
Someone might take them if they're free

Thanks. I just don't have any time at all. It's a house clearance ahead of sale, 200 miles from my home.

Some National Trust houses have second hand book shops, might accept donations. I got rid of several boxes of books to our local Nuffield Hospital some years ago.

2sisters · 31/07/2024 15:41

Out schools are desperate for books.

SootspriteSearcher · 31/07/2024 15:47

Could the boxes fit into your car, you could drop a box into each charity shop you pass on the drive home? Or break down into bags which will be lighter and easier to carry.

On the days you are at the house clearing it could you do flyers for free books, put them all outside and people could come take what they want. Recently I went to a book swap event it went very well.

Contact we buy books see if they would collect? That's where the remainder of the book swap books went.

Oxfam have several bookshops they might collect?

All our local supermarkets have a bookshelf you can leave books on and then pay a pound or whatever to take a book. Morrisons, Iceland, co-op and Sainsbury's.

And our Dunelm has a massive table full.

They won't thank OP for taking 21 boxes of books!

Needmorelego · 31/07/2024 16:00

Can you contact any booksellers in Hay on Wye? They may be happy to take them if you are giving them away for free and may be happy to collect as it's such a large amount.

whatsappdoc · 31/07/2024 16:14

We had 15 crates of hardback non-fiction to get rid of. Military, railways, London etc. Tried everything above but no one interested, it's the sheer volume. Put over 500 books through Ziffit and only about 50 were accepted. Even charity shops don't want more than one box. Ebay was ok but needs a lot of time and we were moving and needed to get packed up. In the end a local sale room took them all. Sold a couple of crates for £10 and they are putting the rest in next month's sale. If they don't sell they give them to Abe Books or similar. Feel your pain op!

gardenmusic · 31/07/2024 16:19

E bay, buyer collects?
Ad in local shop, buyer collects - must take all.
Church for church fete?
All need to make an appointment when you are available
Second hand shop - free if they collect.

EpsilonMaltravers · 31/07/2024 16:20

We got rid of lots of boxes to the nearest National Trust place that has a second hand book shop. Might be worth a try

South Shropshire

There's an Oxfam bookshop in Shrewsbury, might be worth a call? Whether or not they can collect will depend on whether or not they have a volunteer with a van/big car, and I suppose the size of their back room, but in my experience the specialist charity bookshops do tend to value good literary classics.

LBHSisgreat · 31/07/2024 16:29

I asked my kind neighbours via our WhatsApp group if they might each take 2 carrier bags of books from my porch and got rid of 100 bags that way.

They were gradually passed onto Oxfam or to the book recycling bin at the tip.

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 31/07/2024 16:30

We have a huge 2nd hand book store near us where you hand some in and exchange for others, or not if you don't want to. I asked people on fb if they wanted any as lots of ours were good condition kids books. I donated the rest to the local charity shop.

FluffySocksnsandals · 31/07/2024 16:31

Some churches have a book shop or lending library

romdowa · 31/07/2024 16:32

You could send them for recycling. Our local amenity site takes old books for recycling

FluffySocksnsandals · 31/07/2024 16:36

Some rubbish & recycling centres have "book banks" that look like bottle banks
