To wish it would throw it down with rain so at least I would get some peace

Very rare couple of days to myself DH on a golf trip eldest DD on a work course youngest two away with family. Planned to spend a couple of days just pottering, sitting in the garden, using the hot tub and just relaxing as it's nice hot weather and enjoying the peace.

Neighbour has been renovating (a previously renovated house for the last two years, so had 6 years of this in total) came home yesterday to find scaffolding up around their house.

Turns out he is replacing the roof (which was only done a few years ago) so have now got banging, which dog is going nuts over, cannot open doors as dog keeps going out barking at them, music blaring and one roofer singing ( he is tone deaf) and shouty mobile phone conversations from the roof, also do not fancy trying to sunbathe or relax knowing there is 6 guys on a roof looking directly into my garden.

You have my sympathy. It seems every time I try to take a day off, someone is having work done with horrible power tools. I've nearly lost it a few times this summer.

EatMoreFibre · 31/07/2024 14:09

Tbf you have a hot tub and a dog. You were planning to use the hot tub on a nice day therefore causing noise and a nuisance to every around you.

quicklybeendrivenmad · 31/07/2024 15:08

@EatMoreFibre my dog does not make a noise and my hut tub is nowhere near anyones garden and is insulated and was only me in it

Maybe you need move to the countryside if you want silence

Oh here we go. She's not asking for silence ffs.

OP I can absolutely empathise. Just your bad luck to live next door to neighbours who can't leave their house alone. 6 years, and still it goes on..and on.. 😬🥴

As they say, you can't control what those around you do but you can (try to) control your reactions. You won't be able to do what you most yearn to do, but hopefully you can think of a Plan B which takes you away for those hours

I thought you were talking about the general rioting and sword warfare going on in our streets. At the very least the rain may put out fires.

How the hell does one adult woman relaxing in a hot tub make any noise??

WillimNot · 31/07/2024 15:39

I'm actually jealous of places that have rain scheduled today
Not due to nuisance builders but the heat is so bad here and I'm already having hot flashes due to perimenopause so that along with heat is making me wilt

PearlPeer · 31/07/2024 15:45

Sympathies @quicklybeendrivenmad I'm ( quietly) irritated by being able to hear my neighbours all day every day while I'm being quiet in my house or the garden. I'd love a bit of quiet, though grateful that I'm not having to entertain a young family in this heat.
Building works would totally drive me to distraction ( though pity the poor buggers working on the roof!)

Have you lived in the countryside? I've spent most of my life in the countryside and it can be pretty noisy at times!

sadie93 · 31/07/2024 19:47

Ugh I get it. Our neighbours are extending their house at the moment so not a second's peace from 8am until 5pm. At times our house has been literally shaking from the work. Noise cancelling headphones are keeping me sane while working from home, but would love to just have a minute of quiet in the garden just once. Can't wait until they're done.

Sinderalla · 31/07/2024 19:56

One of those days 😣

Soonenough · 31/07/2024 20:05

We had an extension done that seemed to take ages. Worse were the vans parked all over . Luckily our neighbours were very patient with us and lots wanted to view what we had done to get inspiration for theirs . Although one commented that the Taj Mahal probaly took less time.
The reality of urban living is that you will never get complete silence.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/07/2024 20:11

I teach so am off over summer. People out the back are having work done, which is fine, but the “chief builder” is forever shouting at what I assume is the apprentice, often swearing at him really horribly. Poor lad must hate his job. I don’t know which house it is (can’t see for trees) or I would be tempted to give them a knock and ask him to tone it down!

Iggityziggety · 31/07/2024 20:17

Solidarity, my neighbours have been renovating going into year 3 now. They don't live there yet so aren't affected by the noise, radios, shouting and endless swearing of the builders. Sometimes we go weeks without any work but if someone does turn up you can guarantee it will be a sunny day that I have off work, as if by magic.

LlynTegid · 31/07/2024 20:20

Rain is almost nature's police force. Whilst disagreeing with you about the hot tub, it would bring peace for a while, and for many, better sleeping.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 31/07/2024 20:37

Get out in the hot tub in the evening it’s light until late and will of cooled down by then!

PearlPeer · 01/08/2024 09:25

We had rain here the last two nights and still stinking hot in the day. Child me longed for exactly this but adult me is sweating in the humidity!

SnapBang · 01/08/2024 10:00

The noise sounds annoying. Can you not just blast your own music through headphones and ignore them? Unless you’re planning to starfish naked on the top of the tub, I can’t see the guys staring excitedly at the top of a random woman’s head for too long. Just enjoy the tub and pretend they’re not there.

TheYoungestSibling · 01/08/2024 17:16

We live close to the primary school. The crossing needs upgrading. Work started on the day the schools broke up and us due to finish just before they go back. So a road that is usually quieter during school holidays now had diggers, cones, traffic lights and this morning, road rage because neither driver would back up out of the other one's way.

But yes, I suppose I should move to the countryside if I don't want noise.

People probably feel the same about your dog tbf??

Yeah and that goes on longer than most building work!

I did lose it today. I had a rare and precious couple of hours all to myself, settled down at the garden table - and my (very close) next door neighbour started using power tools.

I went into the house - even noisier - then to my garden office, closed the door and swore and cursed. It was only when I emerged that I saw the window was open and there was an excellent chance his wife heard me 🤬
