They’re pointless? And actually dangerous. Nothing they have done has prevented climate change, in fact with all the paint and stopping traffic has massively contributed to it.

Can we get these rich kids living off of mummy and daddy’s coin proper jobs?

Just watched them throw paint around Heathrow, WHAT is that achieving? Except me wanting to go out tomorrow to buy shit tons of oil and wasting it all. In fact I might even put my recycling in the rubbish tonight because they fuck me off that much.

I do not like Just Stop Oil and have visibly on here spoken to people who have tried to poorly argue their case.

However I take issue with the vast majority of your post which is similarly (in my view) poorly argued.

They’re pointless?

I argue not. At some point in history they’ll be seen as early pioneers shouting into the wind.

their methods are poor and often ineffectual. But perhaps they are playing a long game. I don’t know the strategy (if there is any) behind it all.

Nothing they have done has prevented climate change,

Oh come on. Their hundred or so protests were never designed to “stop climate change” worldwide. You are destroying them by holding them to a standard they never had

in fact with all the paint and stopping traffic has massively contributed to it.

Massively? Are you sure? For an afternoon or a day. In a location in a country? That moved the dial? STOP IT

It’s this sort of “me first, DON’T EVER MAKE ME CHANGE” approach which they’re trying to combat. I know you’re being deliberately facetious but they are fighting our weird personal choices.

Look at the rise in SUVs for example. Everyone on here swears blind they need them - their mother or father can’t get into a low car, they need boot space for their hobbies, they need the ride clearance for the 1 day every 3 years it snows.

We can’t change people’s behaviours because people live according to their achievable standard of living and purchase power

Just Stop Oil are trying to change that narrative. I don’t like them or their methods, but I won’t try and rubbish them in a weakly argued way, just to make myself feel better.

I don’t think it’s weakly argued, and honestly JSO deserve all the criticism and backlash they get. I’d love to see an analysis of what they’ve positively achieved. Bet you can’t find one.

Are SUVs in the U.K. really the problem? Or is it China and America pumping out billions of waste, oil and gases that are causing the issue?

Please explain to me how sitting around or throwing paint at departure boards help climate change in any way at all?

Agree :) they are incredibly annoying. I think even people who care about climate change, like me, get pissed off at their methods. Its the arrogance for me. 'I believe this so I'm going to impose it on everyone by force'...

PBandJ111 · 30/07/2024 21:24

JSO are pointless. they just inconvenience ordinary people, and do t make a blind bit of difference. I’d even say they are cowards as they wouldnt dare protest in India or china where the real issue is.

woofyoof · 30/07/2024 21:27

How is being annoying and immature going to change people's behaviours? I'd say it does the opposite as proved by OP wanting to use more oil....

Sticking with facts and providing convincing arguments on the other hand will

This is “whatabouttery” at its finest. It is saying “why should we do anything when China and the US pollute more?”

It is designed to cause induced paralysis, where we just enjoy the best standard of living possible because others are also “enjoying themselves” at the planet’s expense.

Yes, SUVs in the UK probably contribute a very small amount. But so do our flights and our “I must have two holidays minimum a year”. So do our need to have kids. There are so many things we do as humans, and if we ignore them all, then we’ll just keep going inexorably until southern Europe (for example) becomes uninhabitable between April and October, and we all then start to notice “whoa it’s on our doorstep now.”

And it stupidity at its finest to think that a small island in northwest Europe producing less than 1% global emissions makes any difference. While China and US produce more than 30%

The same was said about the suffragette movement.

lunar1 · 30/07/2024 22:22

I do my bit, a drop in the ocean for climate change, but I try. I recycle, low carbon footprint, don't run a car, but my god they make me wish I still had an electric hob so I can leave all the burners running!

5byfive · 30/07/2024 22:29

They get paid. A few of them were on twitter when JSO started up and freely admitted it’s a paid gig. The big question is who pays. The main theories are the British Army or oil companies wanting to limit access to competitors.

Just wondering how much of your stuff was made in China that contributes to all this? The phone you are on right now?

Don't necessarily agree with how JSO do things but at least they are trying to promote the culture change needed.

Sheelanogig · 30/07/2024 22:44

So all those causing disturbance at an airport haven't been abroad on holiday on a plane - ever??
