That publicising this event today is out of order

A local soft play chose last night and today to promote a Taylor swift themed event- it wasn’t out there before hand, just emerged yesterday evening. I think this is out of order given what’s happened in Southport. I sent them a polite private message - alerting them that the Southport event was also Swiftie themed and that they should reconsider their advert. It’s been “seen” but no reply.
AIBU?

I agree @Thedoctorswife1 it's in poor taste

Sethera · 31/07/2024 06:27

Amid the horror of the news, I hadn't even registered that the Southport event had been Taylor Swift themed. As pps have said, unless it is actually in Southport I think it's unimportant in the scheme of things.

Pottedpalm · 31/07/2024 06:51

If it wasn’t already planned it would be pretty daft to just come up with a Taylor theme, given that anyone upset by the connection might not send their child. So I would think it was already planned, and should go ahead.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 31/07/2024 07:36

was the event attacked because it was Taylor swift themed though?
if not then why is it even relevant what the theme was - the media may as well say it was a children’s dance event

it they said that would you think all dance events should be cancelled

I really think this is a bit of a reach tbh

BibbleandSqwauk · 31/07/2024 08:34

Do you advertise an event and THEN start planning it? Usual practice is to research, organise venue, staff, insurance, resources etc then advertise. This will have been weeks / months in the planning.

Exactly

This wasn't thrown together today or yesterday

Binglebong · 31/07/2024 15:19

I think the objection I'd not holding the event, it's that they didn't delay the publicity for a day or two. If I were doing this event I would pull scheduled posts for two days.

VainAbigail · 31/07/2024 16:40

You sound like an utter busybody.

Boomer55 · 31/07/2024 16:52

One event is nothing to do with another. Southport was beyond sad, but the world, and life, keeps turning.🤷‍♀️

distinctpossibility · 31/07/2024 16:58

I happen to think the fact it was a Taylor Swift themed event in Southport will turn out to be 100% related. The killer chosen that event, got a taxi there ffs, deliberately and I suspect it was incel related (they are utterly disgusting about Taylor online). Selecting this event- not, say , a football camp - guaranteed a high proportion of female children and female staff and parents would be affected.

However, similar events should of course go ahead elsewhere. Taylor Swift is a popular singer and role model.

Beekeepingmum · 31/07/2024 17:17

Maybe the Taylor Swift tour should be cancelled too? Who would go to that given the association of the music with child killing.....

Thedoctorswife1 · 30/07/2024 19:55

so the event isn’t near Southport, reading these responses it seems it’s just me who thinks this is out of order. I don’t think the event shouldn’t happen but timing of the promotion seems really off. Just to clarify, it wasn’t scheduled at all before last night so it just feels a bit wrong. Looks like IABU though

Can you share the advert?

TheresaCrowd · 31/07/2024 17:20

Just because it wasn't advertised in advance, doesn't mean it wasn't planned.

Of course it was, events don't just happen at the click of a finger.
