About 9 months ago she had quite an in depth blood test which did not show anything.
I'm looked and her iron was 2 above low range eg if cut off was 30 she was 32. So since then, sparodically she has been given fluid vit with iron.

Snap shot diet would be salad of watercress /rocket /chicken /lots of salads, stir fry with brocoli, lots of peppers, tomatoes garlic...

Occasional steak, pork eggs.

Yoghurt with fruit and nuts for breakfast on most days or porridge (, sachets) and sparodically home made juice of celery carrot beetroot.

Snapshot.
We don't eat lots of fish at all we do eat crisps and chock

But it's OK.

Why is she getting veruca, we think she had whopping cough and is still residual cough... Much better and not an issue but still coughing...

We've asked for new tests re her on going constipation issues. This came on suddenly last July. And we've got a scan booked re constipation.

Any ideas?

My idea is you might be worrying too much and these things will just resolve. Well maybe not the verruca cos they can be stubborn fuckers. But otherwise you have not given any details to cause concern like how long has the cough been going on for. Could be asthma, acid reflux, post nasal drip or lingering symptoms following a virus.

Lemonsallday · 29/07/2024 23:42

My daughter (9) had an ongoing cough for months. She’s been diagnosed with cough variant asthma and has a brown inhaler twice in the morning and twice at night and is so much better.

she is also constipated (chronically since a baby though). I don’t think this is linked and she has ongoing movicol for this.

she also gets verrucas but I think that’s pretty normal for kids. We use bazuka but it takes a while.

has your daughter received any medication for the constipation? Does she drink enough fluids?

OrwellianTimes · 29/07/2024 23:53

Verrucas can take years to get rid of. Keep treating them.

Did you have her vitamin D levels checked? A lot of us are deficient in the U.K., and I’d imagine more this year than ever after months of non stop rain.

SwingTheMonkey · 29/07/2024 23:57

Verrucas are totally normal aren’t they? They aren’t a sign of poor health? Some of my kids are prone to them - one of them had loads of them on his toes, it was revolting. We treated them and they eventually went away.

Why did your daughter have extensive blood testing 9 months ago? I don’t mean to sound condescending but do you suffer from anxiety?

HateMyselfToo · 30/07/2024 00:04

Nothing in your post seems like a massive concern.
For the constipation and general health, more water possibly.
Why are you so worried? Is there a back story for either her or you here?

tulippa · 30/07/2024 00:06

I think with veruccas once you get one, you'll be more likely to keep getting them for a bit. It's annoying but they'll go away with treatment eventually. I had them on and off for years from childhood and finally got rid of them when I was about 19/20. I've always been pretty healthy and not that prone to illness.
With the constipation would more wholegrain carbs help? All the salad is great but she might need something more substantial to move things along.

KreedKafer · 30/07/2024 00:36

Verrucas and constipation are really normal, routine health niggles that loads of people have. She might want to try eating some more fibre and drinking more water for the constipation, but that’s about it.

And it’s also normal to be left with a cough for a long time after whooping cough.

I don’t really understand why you think any of this is serious? Why are you asking about her diet? She’s not got a verruca because she doesn’t eat fish, you know.

AssassinsEyebrow · 30/07/2024 00:46

Her immunity is clearly low, and op hasn't said she's "so worried" but wants advice as to how to boost her daughters health, so the dismissive responses are unhelpful.

Op - I would request she be given an iron prescription for starters. If gp refuses, then supplement otc consistently. The vit d test someone else suggested is also a good idea becaudr low vit d will affext immunity and I'd look at a good all-round multivitamin with zinc & vitamin c.

Is it possible she's had covid? That can cause lingering problems with immunity.

Is she/has she been stressed? Will also affect immunity...look at incorporating proper relaxation: Mindfulness, fun & laughter, breathwork or meditation. There are some excellent apps & podcasts out there. Try the insight app.

How much quality sleep is she getting?

I know someone who suffered with a very stubborn verruca for years - all the usual medical treatments failed- until they had acupuncture, and the verruca disappeared within a fortnight.

Unless there’s a huge back story, having full bloods done, booking scans for constipation and planning further tests for nothing that seems particularly alarming, is being overly worried.

I wouldn't worry at all about the verrucas They are as another poster has said, stubborn little buggers. Treat daily and take to chiropodist maybe?

Maybe be more consistent with the iron?

ODFOx · 30/07/2024 08:35

If she's taking iron supplements she is more likely to get constipation.
Don't let her get into the habit of taking laxatives, but try fybogel every other day.
Make sure she's getting out and about. If she isn't getting enough exercise her gut motility will drop.
And lots of water, obviously.

AquaFurball · 30/07/2024 08:46

Thuja tincture and thuja tablets for the verucca, apply the tincture religiously for a few weeks and it will get rid of it.

Diet needs more fibre from your description. Nuts can also cause lots of people to become constipated if they eat too many of them. Add wheat biscuits a couple of days a week. Peppermint oil capsules rather than laxatives if it really persists.

LuckbeaLady2 · 30/07/2024 08:49

@SwingTheMonkey

It was a comprehensive test ordered by the doctor because a year ago she suffered from wee issues /constipation etc.

I didn't ask for it.
Do you think your comment fits with the ethos of the site, to help other mums?

The verucas has been reoccurring for years and we've always been told that it's run down /low immunity by the podiatrist clinic

@KreedKafer

Is it normal to suddenly become constipated last July and still be struggling now inspite of endless movicol prescribed by the doctor?

I mentioned some of the background doc stuff to try and stave off the unhelpful, go to a gp remarks.

OP posts:
LuckbeaLady2 · 30/07/2024 08:54

@AssassinsEyebrow the doc said her bloods were perfectly normal and in the middle it was only when I asked for a copy I saw she was right on the cusp.
It's a liquid vitamin with iron im reluctant to give it every day because of the constipation issue

Fimbledore · 30/07/2024 08:55

Iron supplements cause constipation.
Golden linseeds are good for constipation.
Maybe take vit D3 supplement daily to boost immune system.

Marchingonagain · 30/07/2024 09:24

Cheap iron supplements make you constipated. stop whatever she is taking and use spatone, which doesn’t cause constipation. Increasing animal
fat in my diet got rid of my constipation. More bacon, fatty mince, steak etc. If she must take a laxative, the best, non-habit forming ones are lactulose and fybogel. A lot of the others cause dependency

If she’s been taking iron supplements, they can cause constipation.

LuckbeaLady2 · 30/07/2024 09:49

@KreedKafer
The constipation and other issues came first. B
I give the vitamin with iron a few times a week not everyday due to the constipation.

LuckbeaLady2 · 30/07/2024 09:50

@Marchingonagain that's really interesting thank you.

She's been taking movicol.

Your daughter’s iron levels weren’t low - they were in the NORMAL range. I would stop the iron supplements.

Peonies12 · 30/07/2024 10:10

If her iron was in normal range, why is she taking supplements as they cause constipation. I'd focus on getting iron from her diet - dried apricots are good, also dark green veg, and have Vitamin C alongside the iron rich foods. vitamin D supplements could help though, especially during winter. Is she drinking plenty of water? The tests seem excessive to me, for what sound like minor and common issues. Perhaps the tests and your worrying are causing her anxiety, which can affect her overall wellbeing and health. At 16, she should be making informed decisions about her own health, you shouldn't be managing it.

LuckbeaLady2 · 30/07/2024 10:15

@Peonies12 we don't have private health care the docs did the test and thought It necessary.

It's strange people think I'm somehow ordering unnecessary tests?

She had one done last year.

OP posts:
LuckbeaLady2 · 30/07/2024 10:19

@Peonies12 Just for your own info, there has been much discussion about iron on here.

I myself had low iron I suspect for many years undiagnosed.

The main thrust has been the NHS sets iron levels very low, lower than nice guidelines and being 2 above the normal range is actually a couple of periods away from being below the normal range.
Ideally women should be around 70 for good hair health and so on. That's a robust figure.

I was told by another staff member who had looked at dd results but wasn't allowed to tell me what they were (complicated out of hours story) she said always ask for a copy and check the amounts yourself.
She said even if they are right on a cusp docs will tell you they are OK.
I felt she was strongly hinting to me and whenever I got the results the only result not in the middle of range was her iron.
