im NOT asking for medical advice, im under cardiology and awaiting an ablation for tachycardia (ive made a separate thread about that) but ive had a lot of ECGs recently and just wondered out of curiosity if anyone could explain briefly (for an absolute amateur like myself!!) in an ECG roughly what it shows? I’ve heard them talking about Q R S and certain peaks being missing or shorter or longer etc etc, just wondered if anyone could roughly explain it for dummies?! As in what they are looking for etc? I tried googling it but there’s so much jargon I couldn’t make sense of it!

i’ll post a picture of mine when it was ‘good’ and when it was ‘bad’- obviously I’m aware they look different from each other but just wondered if anyone could roughly explain what they look for in an ecg?

Your second picture is the normal one.

The little wave in the middle is a P wave which is the signal for your atria to contract. The atria are the top 2 chambers of the heart which pump blood into the ventricles, the bigger chambers.

The QRS is the spike in your second picture. This is the signal relating to your ventricles contracting and pushing blood around the body.

In your first picture the rate is too fast and you can't see any P waves - they may be there but hidden. As you have SVT you have a pathway making the ventricles contract too often so the rate is fast and the normal P wave first then QRS is disrupted.

There are literally books on ECG analysis. It gets complicated very quickly! But no-one ever flatlines - a straight flat line means the leads are disconnected
