Tooth extraction advice please!…..

I had my tooth removed last Thursday. It was a tooth that only had the roots still intact (previously had a crown with a post that fell out).
The extraction took a while as the dentist said my tooth was quite firmly in place but after a lot of digging etc. it came out with no incision to the gum.
I’ve since been following all the advice and been taking ibuprofen when needed. I looked at the site yesterday and there was a grey/white film over the hole. I’ve looked today and there is now a hole in the grey/white film. I’ve experienced some pulsating and some pain but nothing too bad.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal healing or should I go back to the dentist?
thanks

I'd err on the side of caution if it was me. You don't want a dry socket! Best to get it checked.

I had a wisdom tooth extraction done at hospital. The initial pain was as expected but after a couple of days things went down hill. Quite a lot of pain and a yellow white gunk in the socket. I had to go back to get it washed out and some medication (I think.). It’s really easy for random food or foreign objects to get caught in there. I did feel rough though so im
judging it on that rather than the appearance alone.

I’d go back to get it checked.

I had a tooth removed about 7 weeks ago. It was 5 weeks of hell, and it's still not healed. I was living on painkillers for weeks. I should have gone back, but I was hoping it would right itself. It was ok the first few days. I think I then developed a dry socket. Then it swelled, and over granulated and bleed like mad. I went back to the dentist and had antibiotics. It's still not healed over, but much better than it was. Go back to your dentist.

Thanks everyone, I’ll call them first thing in the morning

Definitely go and check, but fwiw when I had a tooth out a few weeks ago, the dentist said you’d know if you had dry socket because it would be excruciating. So hopefully it’s not that!

HotPotato123 · 29/07/2024 22:08

Dry socket is a pain that cannot be explained, it’s excruciating. You will know if you have it.

Crysti · 29/07/2024 22:11

Dry socket pain is horrendous- phone the dentist tomorrow in case it’s the start of it! Better getting it sorted asap. I suffered 5 days including over a weekend, by the Monday morning I was outside the dentists at 8am begging for pain relief!

Have you been doing salt rinses? I thought I'd got a weird white lump in my gap, but after a salt rinse it came out....it was a bit of food that had got trapped.

KrustyTheKat · 29/07/2024 22:59

I’ve been religiously following their advice about rinsing with salt water, no spitting or sucking on straws.

I’m Worried about dry socket as my son had it and was in agony for weeks. He had bleeding and swelling too and I don’t have that. The pain is quite bearable (at the moment)

The grey/white film is normal and part of the healing process. I can't remember if it forms evenly or from the edges in, and I don't remember seeing a hole in the centre.

I had a tooth removed by a dental surgeon because there was a risk it would shatter and I would need an incision to remove fragments, I also had an abscess. It did come out in one piece after a lot of tugging from side to side.

I had discomfort and throbbing at the extraction site, took Neurofen and paracetamol religiously for 2 days and then realised I'd forgotten to take them on the third and I didn't need them.

Some people need to take painkillers for longer and a lot depends on the roots of the tooth and how well your tissues heal.

If in doubt get it checked, the last thing you want is an infection to take hold.
