I think Rachel Reeves did great today BUT someone who has paid their stamp for 30 or is it 35 years whatever the max is, will only be about £4 or £5 pounds a year better off than somebody who has paid nothing. Couldn't they say you still get the winter fuel allowance if your income is under £15k or £20 k

It’s probably just because there’s already a thread about winter fuel allowance with 600+ posts.

Could you point me to that thread please? I can't find it.

Lines get drawn somewhere, and it always feels unfair to the person affected.

Making it only apply to pensioners on benefits makes it very much cheaper and easier to implement than assessing each household in turn.

WhereIsBebèsChambre · 30/07/2024 10:32

They manage to assess those on uc monthly?
But then I'm beginning to get annoyed already with all the 'you shouldn't get x monies' so child benefit, winter fuel, and am expecting state pension next, if you have earned income. Basically tax, tax tax if you work, have worked, and those who haven't ever contributed (and not because they arent aren't able to) are being given more and more. Also if you don't think this is wonderful and are ecstatic to keep paying more and more while struggling yourself you are just awful.

In cases like this there will always be a section of people who will be one pound above the cut off and they are the ones that will suffer.
No problem with the very wealthy losing the payment, they don't actually need it, it's those in the middle who have worked hard and built up a modest pension who lose out.
I would advise anyone who has worked hard and built up a bit of a savings pot to get it spent or labour will come after it
