Do you play music in public? WHY?

Today me and DCs have gone to a local beauty spot by the river. It's really peaceful, usually a few people having picnics and kids paddling and that's it. Today a family has set up near us and is playing music very loudly. For me it really spoils the vibe of being outside with just the sound of the breeze and the water. I've noticed this on the beach too. The worst was someone setting up a big speaker on some rocks in a spot of absolute staggering beauty abroad where everyone else was talking quietly and snorkeling. I just don't get it. I'd genuinely like to hear from those who do this, some of you must be here. Do you think because you like the music, others will too? Do you think it sets a nice energy and that everyone else will be thankful/enjoy it? Do you just not care as long as you have what you want?

YABU - it's not a problem
YANBU - it's antisocial and/or selfish

I don't think you'll get an accurate poll now sorry OP, people who voted in the first place might not be back to amend it

I would love to know the answer to that question!

I actually think there should be more laws regarding this kind of thing. Noise is a type of pollution.

I think it's just really tricky, unfortunately, to enforce that kind of law at a beauty spot or open countryside where there are no rangers/wardens/whatever.

I think quite a lot of municipal parks do have rules about music. But obviously it needs park wardens/rangers be present to enforce them though, and not many councils have the budget for staff to be present and patrolling at a park all the time.

I live opposite a colossal council-owned parkland area, and oddly I don't see many people playing music there at all, even though it's really popular in good weather for people picnicking and having get-togethers. Maybe that's because the kind of people who would typically play music in public tend to go to the areas of the park where there's stuff to do (one area has a boating lake with a cafe, pedalo boats, adventure playground, petting zoo for kids etc and there's also a showground section which often hosts a funfair) rather than going to the woods or rolling parkland areas to relax? I don't know. But luckily it's big enough that you can spend an afternoon in the parklands/woods/fields without even noticing the noisier, more activity-led areas are even there.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 29/07/2024 12:55

I can be really clumsy so may have stumbled against their speaker knocking it into the river.

familyissues12345 · 29/07/2024 12:56

I think unless the person doing it, is doing it to make their life more manageable- ie I know someone who struggles with outside noise (sensory issue) so prefers to drown out with music through AirPods - I think it's a pain in the arse..

Love a good brass band though! That's very different

swedex · 29/07/2024 12:56

Drives me insane! My husband always says he's going to blast out some death metal the next time someone puts so shitty music on when we go to a lake or beach. (He wouldn't dream of actually doing it!) so antisocial everyone has totally different music tastes so why must I listen to someone else's choice!

Hateam · 29/07/2024 12:57

People now play music on their phone's speaker on hospital wards.
I think they should be beaten to death with a piece of heavy mining equipment.

IggysPop · 29/07/2024 12:59

I agree with Hateam.

I was really looking forward to a Sunday afternoon in the garden yesterday. Neighbours decided to start playing dance music from 5pm - knobbers.

If I'm sat out by a lake with a bbq, some beers and some friends, someone often has a speaker but playing softly in the background and nice music, just as its going dark.. but I say yanbu because most people have no common sense and no social awareness.

I’d be seething if I was near you. Unless very very quiet.

on the beach yesterday, just a family and dogs beach in uK. Family setting up chairs etc at 11am with music load enough to hear a 100 yards away.

Teenagerantruns · 29/07/2024 13:01

I live right by a beach, l hate loud music on beach during the day, in the evening when I'm walking home from work by beach all the teenagers are hanging out playing music this for some reason doesn't bother me, l suppose the day is for families and adults to relax, the evening not so much.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/07/2024 13:03

I think your poll is skewed, OP, it's not a natural 'YABU' given the unreasonableness of others...

ChaoticCrumble · 29/07/2024 13:03

We had hired a beach hut last year, during a seaside town holiday, and some 'beach wankers' as we called them set up right in front of us on the beach and played horrendously loud music for three days in a row. We couldn't move the beach hut obviously so I had to settle for glaring at them instead.

Some people are just selfish AND oblivious = beach wankers.

Startingagainandagain · 29/07/2024 13:03

I found that so irritating...

I never understand why people think it is OK to force their music on others in public places.

blossomismyfriend · 29/07/2024 13:03

People who play music outdoors deserve to be tied to a nearby tree and covered in lactulose and sudocrem.

otravezempezamos · 29/07/2024 13:04

It is on par with people watching things on public transport without earphones. Complete bellend behavior.

Your idea of nice music is another's person's idea of hell.

Playing 'softly' is just as annoying as you still have the irritating tinny buzz in the background that gets louder and quieter depending on the breeze. If you want to play music while drinking beers with friends, go inside!

Tightfishedtwat · 29/07/2024 13:10

We aren't in the uk at the moment but we're is a restaurant in Spain and a mum and teenage daughter were watching TikTok videos top volume over dessert. This is clearly an extension of parents who let their little ones watch iPads and phones at mealtimes.

To be fair we are a very socially aware group, if anyone else is about its switched off and tends to be later on. I'm completely aware of folks playing loud and hate it, and we are a very polite and respectful family. It's just another perspective

Mugcake · 29/07/2024 13:12

Oh my god yes! It's so annoying, it always seems to be shitty dnb as well. And why blast it so loudly? Can these people really not have a conversation or bare one moment of silence?
The worst is when they're on the beach smoking and playing it super loud, the entitlement is insane

iwasashowgirl · 29/07/2024 13:13

Absolutely bloody hate it!! A neighbour a few doors down plays shit music so loud I can hear it boom booming when it’s sunny. If I wanted to hear fking music, I’d have my own on - why would I want to hear their shit?

PassingStranger · 29/07/2024 13:14

I think it depends on the music.
If its crap then it irritates me.

capstix · 29/07/2024 13:14

The world is an increasingly crowded place. Some people might love to sit and listen to music with friends by a river. You're right that there's a balance to be struck between doing it reasonably and doing it too loudly.

Panda89 · 29/07/2024 13:15

Poll options were initially confusing and I voted the wrong option - however YANBU I strongly hate people who play their own music in unexpected places (I.e beach, park etc) and I’m glad other people agree as DH thinks I am unreasonable.

Grau · 29/07/2024 13:16

My poll has been corrected by mnhq, yay! Must have typed my OP in a rage 😂

Went to the beach yesterday and loads of people around us had speakers with them playing music loudly. It all just blended into one noise. Very disrespectful and entitled. Don’t get me stared on all the smokers around us and people setting up their blankets right next to us. We were there first and then suddenly surrounded but all this. We had a large group next to us who were standing on our blanket and my kids swimming costumes. I said, excuse me I need our swimming costumes. They didn’t move so then I started to pull the swimming costumes, still didn’t move so I had to pull them really hard to get them back!! I said can you move you are on our stuff- still no action from them. I got so angry I started shaking our sandy towels on them-still no reaction from them! Fucking idiots. When my kids came back from the sea to pour water in the moat they had built around their sand castle, the moat was filled with their rubbish! Anyway there should be designated areas for for speakers, smokers and idiots

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 29/07/2024 13:22

Drives me nuts

I was looking at a cool bag yesterday with a built in bluetooth speaker and thinking why
