Just go a new oven and determined to keep it nice and clean unlike our previous one which I just gave up on.

could you please tell me your best oven cleaner?

looking for one of those foamy ones which you spray and leave for the day and then it all comes off effortlessly. Does something like that exist?

this is not an ad btw lol

  1. Send back your new oven and replace it with a pyrolytic one that self cleans, incinerates all the grease, leaving you to just gently wipe up a bit of ash, or:
  2. Get someone in a couple of times a year to do it for you (note that in my experience, this works out more expensive than option 1 over time).
  3. No idea about 'those foamy ones' I gave up on our previous one too, so I shamelessly sold it as 'needs cleaning' and did option 1.

Her name is Linda. She comes to the house. £45 a time and the oven is left
looking like new. Highly recommend her.

The tip I got from MN years ago was to use baking soda and lemon juice.

Mix them together in a sort of frothy paste (they'll react and fizz) and dab this all over the oven and shelves. Put the oven on the lowest setting for an hour or so. Once it's cooled down everything will just wipe off.

I used this on an oven that hadn't been cleaned for years, couldn't believe how well it worked! The encrusted brown shelves were sparkling silver again!

Whatever you do, do not use one that you leave overnight. I had used it many times before but the most recent useage resulted in blowing the element and an £180 repair bill.

I'll be getting someone in to clean it next time.

The man that comes every year and does the oven, dishwasher and washing machine for £5.99 a month.

The oven is supposed to be pyro-wotsit but it's never done it

I use this one from Poundland and it's very good:

Oven Brite Cleaning Kit, 500ml (poundland.co.uk)

I also place a silicone mat at the bottom of the oven and clean every so often. It stops too much grease falling on the oven floor as I use those baking trays with the holes in them.

Thelnebriati · 29/07/2024 13:39

If you buy a self cleaning oven, check what kind of cleaner you can use on it and stick to that, because the caustic ones can destroy the self-cleaning coating.

Sahara123 · 29/07/2024 13:41

I am absolutely hopeless at oven cleaning, nothing seems to work. And i hate it. How do you ever get the roof of the oven and the grill elements clean.?
I now have a pyrolytic one , it’s fantastic, i will have them forever now.

shivbo2014 · 29/07/2024 13:52

Getting someone in 3 times a year, it's the only way. It looks like new when he's finished. I have never been able to get it properly clean myself.

unsync · 29/07/2024 14:12

I'm now in the 'get someone in' camp. It was a revelation. Also, I now use roasting bags. We no longer have roast pork with crackling, which also helps keep the oven clean.

GradGirl · 29/07/2024 15:49

I’ve only tried a commercial cleaner once and I didn’t think it was any better than I did it myself, in an hour with a 20 min wait within that. Wondering if I should try another one.

I don’t think my ovens are self cleaning, but to be fair I don’t really know what that means.

I can pour 400ml of soapy water into the oven and select a certain setting, I’ve never used it 😂, is that what everyone means by self cleaning or is it something swankier than that?

lazyarse123 · 29/07/2024 15:57

My DH. He is weird about cleaning ovens and other appliances. I very graciously let him get on with it. I just need to convince him he likes ironing
We do share housework before anyone jumps on..

GinAndBeerIt · 29/07/2024 15:58

Oven pride. My oven comes up like brand new with minimal effort.

SnazzyShambles · 29/07/2024 16:02

Oven Pride gets my vote, it’s brilliant

GradGirl · 29/07/2024 16:06

I took the finish off a sink in a previous house with oven pride. Haven’t used it since.

BertieBotts · 29/07/2024 19:04

It doesn't matter which one you buy, get the supermarket own brand one if you like.

The secret is to cover the foam after you spray it with cling film and leave it for about 2-4 times the suggested amount of time on the bottle. Then come back and you can just wipe it off with a microfibre cloth. It's absolute magic.

Also, read the oven manual and find out how to take bits apart for cleaning. So much easier than trying to crane around at awkward angles.

And yes check if the manual says what products to use on it. Just ignore brands - they usually pay for that mention. The important thing to note is whether it says to avoid any specific chemicals.

There are all kinds of appliance repairpeople on youtube if you ever want to go down a rabbithole. (But the cling film tip, I got from Aurikateriina, this mad Finnish lady who loves cleaning).
