Covid competitiveness?

Has anyone else noticed this.

When that (horrendous) subject is mentioned I feel like sometimes people compete in a “I had it 3 times” “well I had it 6 times” and then will go on to describe their symptoms - which I really couldn’t care less about as I’m sure most of us had it at some point, like no Jane I don’t care you lost your sense of taste for a week.

If it helps I have never had it (never tested positive for it and have not been ill) and the whole rest of the family had it the first time and just DH the next. We were testing regularly at this point and I tested the kids the same as myself so feel I was probably doing it right

FuzzyStripes · 28/07/2024 22:29

No, I’ve not noticed this. Perhaps it’s just you?

PurpleBugz · 28/07/2024 23:11

Yup I definitely think this is a thing.

People always discuss health. It's like period/pregnancy/menopause/pneumonia conversations. People join in and give symptoms.

It’s not that. It’s the one upping - you had it 20 times, they’ll have had it 11. They will tell you their symptoms because they will insist they had it worse.

I know several people who lost family members and another who has ongoing ill health resulting from it so be glad you only have to listen to something that is at worst mildly annoying. I find the Covid eye rollers incredibly ignorant and insensitive.

LlynTegid · 29/07/2024 08:15

Not had this, but it is stupid. No-one knows whether you caught it because of misfortune, being forced into an office more often than really needed as your manager is poor in some way, or from the kind of recklessness that was characteristic of the then Prime Minister in March 2020.

mybeautifulhorse · 29/07/2024 08:35

I get this but in the reverse. I've had Covid four times, but I have three young children so am quite exposed to germs generally.

If it comes up, which it does occasionally, I get a lot of 'oh really?!? I've never had it, not even once!! But then DH and I are suuuuuper careful about hand hygiene etc so maybe that's why?!' and then a little side-eye as if I'm a minger who never washes their hands.

Oh I had that with a nursery mum. Whenever one of our dc fell poorly, she would say “ mine are thankfully pretty robust - but then I am a great believer in fruit and veg.” Then absolutely gave side eye. The truth - which it took much restraint not to blurt out- was that hers were usually the source of the lurgy but she was one of those “ mine never have a day off “ types who ignored any symptoms and sent them in as super spreaders .🙄

How is having it 11 times compared to someone else’s 20 times one upping? Perhaps they did have it worse? Perhaps it’s something you shouldn’t be spending so much time giving a shit about?

Never noticed it, but I don't know anyone that's tested for years. It's only on Mumsnet I realised anyone still tests.

ll09sm · 29/07/2024 11:29

Are people really still going on about Covid? They clearly need psychological help to be so obsessed by it. You would think the penny would have dropped by now that it was no worse than the flu for healthy people without any core morbidities

Chypre · 29/07/2024 11:34

Had covid (yes, tested) recently, was floored with 39-40 degree fever that just wouldn't respond to any meds. Had no ovulation and no period in that cycle either, TTC (testing LH - thats how I know) so quite disappointed. For some people it's not "just" a cold, it really does wreck the body in many ways.

I get the same - I've just got over having it for the 5th time and my husband (wfh) has just had it for the first time. I have four kids and also work in a school germ factory Lots of people give the hand washing side eye, my hands are sore from washing/antibac, it's not easy to avoid it in schools, you are right in the thick of it.

TheBizzies · 29/07/2024 11:41

It's the Covid version of elevenerife

I know some people with lasting damage. But you can’t tell the ones who don’t want to know.

Starlightstarbright3 · 29/07/2024 12:35

I think it is just conversation - maybe you aren’t a people person ?

ForKeenDeer · 29/07/2024 12:43

I've never had it, was vaguely sick Xmas 2021, so tested but looked half positive and realised my orange juice tested more positive and I've never had a vaccine lol. Honestly, I'm shocked people can make it a competition 😂 I've Honestly been sick twice with any flu/cold type thing in 7 years so I couldn't even make it a competition!

PizzaPowder · 29/07/2024 15:44

I didn't realise anyone even spoke about covid anymore.

Shockvote · 29/07/2024 15:47

I’ve had covid 9 times, and on each occasion it was the worst period of illness I’d ever had. On the ninth occasion it was so bad and so long that I had to declare the virus as a resident at my house for council tax purposes. Of course, I never went to hospital, I just carried on working from home, just about summoning enough strength to press a mouse button.

This trope is so wrong and dismissive.

I know several people who were very healthy before getting Covid. And still have continuing breathing problems, neuropathy, chronic fatigue etc months and even years later.

You know several people. Well that means that it must be true.

The hysteria about Covid has cost far more lives than Covid itself. If people are still going on about it, they don’t need Covid treatment, they need psychological therapy.

Bourneyesterday · 30/07/2024 01:37

I think we have all had it many times and it is entirely unimpressive. Competitive covid! Come on.
