I’m mid thirties and have always had a pretty accurate cycle. Around 8 days ago I began feeling horrendous, chest infection, constant temperatures etc. I still barely feel better all this time later. When the illness began I was day 9 into my cycle so I had literally just finished my period. In the last three days I have started another period. I didn’t think it was a proper period at first and even thought it was maybe old blood coming out but it’s not, it’s a proper period again? Does this mean something sinister is going on? I’ve also had lower stomach pain that’s coming and going. I’m really worried, two periods with a few day gap in between isn’t right is it?

I bet my house you've had covid.

I've had it 3 times and each time it screwed my periods up, each time coming mega early the next time.

itsgettingweird · 28/07/2024 18:29

Yep I'd guess covid too.

wprried · 28/07/2024 18:54

Thanks @BloodyAdultDC @itsgettingweird i actually did a Covid test around five days in and it was negative, I still felt and feel awful though, so I have assumed it can’t be that? Perhaps the tests no longer pick up current variants?

I have had Covid years ago and it has no effect on my cycle which is why I am anxious that this may be something serious

I actually would get this checked out by a GP, consider the ongoing stomach pain.

wprried · 28/07/2024 19:03

@Lammveg are you thinking of something serious?

As others have said, the illness could have messed with your cycle. You said you’re mid-30s - it could be perimenopause. From about 35 onwards I had some unusual periods (similar to what you’ve described plus some that went the other way, very very late, after years of a clockwork 35-day cycle). A massive shock to me as I didn’t realise for ages that it started messing with your bleed so early!

From what you’ve said it sounds like you are started again on day 17 or so, is that about right? I had a good few of those!

It’s horrible when you are worrying about your health - so I hope you are able to find something to help you relax a little. If the stomach pains are bothering you then it’s always worth getting checked out for peace of mind if nothing else.

You know already that no one can tell you for sure and I know you're looking for reassurance.

The worrying and not knowing isn't helpful though, so just to be on the safe side I'd get it checked out - no harm in that!

I think COVID is like flu and mutates a lot so tests aren't reliable. I'd assume it's because you've been ill, but if it lasts or reoccurs, get checked out.

LittleBird74 · 28/07/2024 22:56

So many times when I’ve been unwell with nasty viruses/chest infections/tonsillitis it has brought my period on early. Sometimes up to two weeks early. Very annoying as it’s the last thing you can be done with when ill!

Tomnooktoldmeto · 28/07/2024 22:58

It does sound like COVID, the latest variant isn’t being picked up by all lateral flow tests apparently.

I had a horrific period that lasted 2 weeks when I had COVID last October then a short one 2 weeks after, there is a lot of information around about it.

Before anyone worries, I am asthmatic and needed steroids within 24 hours and they can cause excessive bleeding, frightening at the time but all ok now
