Growing abscesses all over my body

Hi, I posted about two weeks ago about a large abscess on my breast which burst and caused cellulitis and I ended up in hospital and am due to see a breast surgeon to have the remaining remained, but it’s all drained and calmed down now, just the lump remaining.

I also had a smaller abscess on my other breast which has now grown and I think in a couple of days will burst too as it’s getting larger quite quickly and more tender.

I had a bath earlier and whilst drying myself I noticed two more abscesses on my stomach; one quite large but they don’t hurt yet.

I am overweight and have PCOS and diabetes (I never had a weight problem until the PCOS got out of control a couple years ago).

Does anyone know why this could be happening/have any experience?

It’s making me feel gross about my body but also I’m an MRSA carrier and the diabetes worries me because I always have slow healing wounds.

I’m already covered in scars from wounds that have taken months to heal.

thank you x

It sounds like it would be a combination of diabetes and MRSA causing it then (?) What has the treating doctor or GP said about it?

Could you have this...

Someone I know has it in their groin area and has to have regular surgeries to remove the absesses

I'm sorry this is happening and hope things improve.

nhs.uk

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)

Find out about hidradenitis suppurativa, a painful, long-term skin condition that causes abscesses and scarring on the skin.

I came on to mention this condition as a friend has it. If it is HS there is an experimental treatment that is working very successfully- there was a piece in BBC news app a day or two ago.

It’s the diabetes unfortunately

you need to get it under control quick smart as it shows it is not controlled

are you on meds? Making effort with diet?

tiredandmoody · 28/07/2024 16:25

I’m planning to call the GP tomorrow, with the last abscess they didn’t say anything just that I’d be referred to the breast surgeon. At the time I only had the burst one and the one on my right breast which was very small, now it’s growing and the one on my tummy. The GP was more focused on the cellulitis at the time

@TheShiningCarpet Yes I’m on metformin and have been watching my diet, I’m down 1stone in 3 weeks

I’m glad your original problem has improved. There’s a small possibility your MRSA produces an toxin which makes it more likely to cause skin abscess, or that your immune system is weakened so you are getting infections (if your HbA1c is high that might be more likely). I’d suggest booking an appointment with your GP (make sure you do get to see a GP) and discuss it with them. Don’t leave it until the ones on your stomach start to hurt.

DW has this- a tell tail sign is that the scars left are frequently black, not normal scar colour.

spikeandbuffy · 28/07/2024 16:27

It could be HS but that's unusual areas, it usually starts in the groin and armpits
Although I have HS and I've had a breast abscess before and HS abscess/wounds tend to be slow to heal

spikeandbuffy · 28/07/2024 16:28

And yes my scars are a dark purple and take ages to fade

tiredandmoody · 28/07/2024 16:31

I’ve randomly just found another big one on my groin too!

spikeandbuffy · 28/07/2024 16:32

Do you use hibiscrub? If you don't it's worth getting some to wash the areas with

FadedRed · 28/07/2024 16:33

Is your MRSA a hospital or community acquired strain? Have you been asked to do the 5 day full body chlorhexidine or similar washes/ nasal ointment treatment?

TheShiningCarpet · 28/07/2024 16:54

Well done!

what was your last hba1c? The metformin will suppress it but won’t reverse the diabetes. With mrsa I agree you are experiencing double whammy and gp should give better guidance on what you can do

(ps my original a1c in old form was 10.9 and a skin abscess on my leg was a sign that Things not well, also leaves a purple scar. I didn’t have meds and within 6 months had got my a1c down to 6.9 and the to normal within a year - I followed the mastering diabetes and dr Fuhrman methods feel free to PM me if you want any info)

tiredandmoody · 28/07/2024 17:22

I put some pressure on the one on my groin and it’s just oozed a load of thick pus, but there’s still so much in there that hurts too much to get out. I wasn’t intending to pop it I was just trying to feel how ‘ready’ it was. Oops
