To consult my GP because I have had a cough lasting about 5 weeks?

I almost never go to the doc . believing most things run their course but this cough is still keeping me awake at night, although not as bad as it was for the first two weeks.

Seems a minor thing to bother the doc about but it is actually having quite an impact on my life , not being able to sleep.

I have tried every possible medication .

What do you all think?

jasper

you're rubbish

get yer arse down the surgery

SlightlyMadSweet · 15/04/2008 13:36

Jasper...please got to the GP.

I was sat in your position 2 weeks ago, can't have time off work blah blah blah.

I ended up really really poorly and had to have a week off as I couldn't even walk to car without getting breathless. AT one point I thought I would be going to A&E via ambulance.

I am suffering a relapse now I stopped ABs, going downhill again. BUT I have a really really important meeting tomorrow/Thurs which I can't miss. Having said that I learnt last time so if I continue to go downhill I may will stay off work.

chrissnow · 15/04/2008 13:42

GO. TO. THE. DOCTORS.
I had a cough for about 2 weeks, it turned into a cold which ended up on my chest. I ended up being rushed to A&E to be put on a nebuliser to help me breathe. I was then treated for pleuresy. (It was 98% confirmed, but I refused chest x-rays as I was 24 weeks pregnant).

MrsClinton · 15/04/2008 13:49

dh had cough ages ago and lots ABs to clear it (and xray to check)

couple of years later: his occupational nurse at work says Oh you were the one who had pneumonia

SlightlyMadSweet · 15/04/2008 14:09

Lots of people panic about the term "pneumonia". Fact is that "pneumonia" is just the medical name for a chest infection in the lower airways.

Many things described by the GP as a "chest infection" are actually "pneumonia".

GET TO THE DOCTORS

"fingers crossed" emoticon!

Elasticwoman · 15/04/2008 21:58

In the meantime, before you get to the doctor's, are you taking the following anti-cough measures?:-

  • hot lemon and honey before...
  • early bed
  • propped up with loads of pillows so you are not horizontal
  • keeping warm (hotty botty?)
  • supply of drinking water on bedside table
  • spit out anything your cough produces.

If it's any consolation my dh caught this cough from me and has had it for weeks. Two days ago it turned into a heavy cold. There's a lot of it about

jasper · 15/04/2008 23:21

elasticwoman I can tell you are a mummy!

Thank you so much.
The only one I can't manage is the propped up on pillows thingy. I just can't drift off in that position

pindy · 16/04/2008 15:48

SlightlyMadSweet · 17/04/2008 21:40

Coooeeee.....

orangehead · 17/04/2008 21:44

I got told off big time from my gp for not going earlier with a 7 week cough, which was a really bad chest infection. Im actually going tomorrow with a cough which I have only had a week but sure its on my chest. Go to the docs

Guitargirl · 17/04/2008 21:51

I went to the GP about a month ago after having a cough for 5 weeks which was bad then seemed to get better then got so bad at night I was up vomiting several nights in a row and waking the whole house up...Finally reluctantly went after realised it was knackering me out and DP had started muttering darkly about TB stories he'd read in the local papers.

Anyway, GP listened to my chest and said it was clear and prob initial virus which got better and then another virus. Miraculously I went from vomiting at night to feeling much much better after seeing GP so I reckon in my case it was partly psychosomatic.

Janni · 17/04/2008 21:57

Oh I'm just like this. I get coughs that last weeks and weeks, I keep thinking they'll clear up and they don't. The last time I raided my DDs antibiotics [shame]

I will go to the GP next time if you will do it this time

lilolilmanchester · 17/04/2008 22:29

You've gone very quiet Jasper... are you ok? Have you been to Drs yet? If not, when is your appointment (just want to be sure you weren't telling porkies....)

WEDNESDAY? Ring the surgery tomorrow and say you could hardly breathe during the night, any chance of pulling you appointment forward. FFS, I went into our GPs today and got an appointment for Monday for something fairly routine. You'll end up with something far more serious if you don't get in soon. Honestly, do it.

SlightlyMadSweet · 17/04/2008 22:54

A week is far too long to wait for a possible chest infetiuon.

lilolilmanchester · 17/04/2008 23:20

(BTW wouldn't normally suggest telling little white lies to Drs' receptionists, but i seriously think they are taking the piss here and you risk ending up with something far more serious than it needs be, waiting a week for an appointment)

darfmummy · 17/04/2008 23:32

Last year I had a cold, a cough and a sore throat for about 4 weeks - I am an antenatal teacher and was worried about passig it on to my ladies so went to the doctors - after tests found I had an ear, throat and chest infection so was given 3 lots of antibiotics and it went after a few weeks.

So, YES go to the doctors - don't let it get that bad!!
