To worry about bonfire smoke

Just come upstairs to bed and the whole first floor of our house stinks of smoke as someone has lit a bonfire. My 14 month old has a cough. Am I being unreasonable to worry about this? It can’t be doing her any good. I don’t know whether it’s better to shut the windows now to stop any more smoke coming in or leave them open and hope it will clear.

It’s a built up area so I think it’s pretty thoughtless to light a bonfire anyway plus it’s been wet recently.

I hear you, OP. Maybe close the windows upstairs now for your own comfort?
Is your DD reacting: restless or coughing now? If not, you could probably leave her.
Otherwise, if is seems really smoky upstairs, can you move your DD downstairs and put her in a closed room without disrupting her? Then you could keep the windows open upstairs to circulate out the smoke. What about yourself? Is your bedroom unpleasantly smoky?
xx

She’s asleep and just coughing occasionally - I can smell the smoke in the room but it’s not too strong, I think it has lessened. To clarify she has a little cold/cough I don’t think she is coughing from the smoke. It just obviously isn’t the best thing for a cough! She’s still in our bedroom (which is another issue) but I think I’ll just see how she is through the night and hopefully it will clear. I’ve closed all the windows at the back (where I think the smoke is coming from) and left them open at the front. The back bedroom absolutely reeks and all our clothes are in there.

I could smell it last night too but not as bad. I’m just so annoyed and I can’t even tell which house it’s coming from to say anything!

We have a neighbour who likes to have bonfires, so I bought an air purifier on ebay - its been a life saver. It only does one room but its effective and doesn't cost much to run.

Snap! I was on my street ringing on neighbour's doorbell my PJs this morning at 6 like a mad woman because they have had a fire burning in their garden since last night. Flat filled with smoke and eyes burning. What is it about sunny weather that brings this out in some people? Built up area, East London.

If you live in a built up area, and it happens again, I’d contact the council. Bonfires should be illegal in urban areas, same for any fires including indoor stoves. Totally unnecessary, it’s so bad for everyone’s health,
