It sounds very upsetting. I've been sectioned for anorexia and it's incredibly distressing. Your instinct is of course not to comply, but you do. And then they might rescind the section. There's no other way but to comply and say you're happy to comply.
I hope the girl gets better. I don't know anything about the Scottish system unfortunately.
What's your take on the situation OP?

RantyMcRanterton · 27/07/2024 21:26

What do you think the 'other side' to this is, OP?

flawedbutterflies · 27/07/2024 21:33

I name changed for this. I have been detained under the mental health act at that very hospital. Overall ive spend 2 yra of my life there and they are being accused of abuse with no way to defend themselves.

The family and friends have staged a protest in hospital grounds causing upset

PurplePink45 · 27/07/2024 21:38

I've heard of it and I totally understand why the family and friends are so concerned.

From experience, these so called experts are bloody dangerous. IMO Mum knows best!

GlenCoco4 · 27/07/2024 21:40

YANBU.
I’ve been sectioned to other hospitals before and can categorically say she won’t die of starvation. Unfortunately people do need to be restrained physically and chemically, it’s not unusual to be left with bruises but if your behaviour poses a risk to self or others then sometimes it’s necessary.
Very unusual for someone to be banned from visiting as this mother has and tbh I haven’t heard of it happening before so definitely think there’s more to it. Due to patient confidentiality, the hospital will be unable to comment on specific cases and therefore can’t defend themselves in this situation. I agree that there’s more than meets the eye and we’re hearing a very biased side.

WindowFrogs · 27/07/2024 21:41

This is horrifying. This is no way to look after a girl with autism, shockingly ignorant approach. Her mum should be able to be with her helping her at home.

PurplePink45 · 27/07/2024 21:44

This girl has an eating disorder called ARFID and these people appear not understand the condition and think that by only offering other foods that this girl feels too anxious to eat that she'll eventually eat other foods. She won't. She'll starve herself.

ThePure · 27/07/2024 21:47

Isn't it more likely that she is anorexic dangerously underweight and at risk of dying? Even her mum thinks she needs a feeding tube but mum thinks she should have it at home which isn't a thing in an acute situation

PurplePink45 · 27/07/2024 21:52

She's not anorexic. She has ARFID which is a totally different eating disorder.

RantyMcRanterton · 27/07/2024 22:00

whydoinotgetalife · 27/07/2024 22:03

If she is sectioned surely they need to restrain and feed her via tube? I understand she isn’t anorexic and has afrid but she is still starving herself to death at this point regardless. If they aren’t going to give her safe foods they NEED to give her a feed?

WorriedMama12 · 27/07/2024 22:03

There will be much more to it, I've worked in mental health wards, there always is more to it. I can't say whether the young woman should be detained or not, as I don't know her medical situation, but reading the story, there are a lot of holes.

Feelingemptybutgood · 27/07/2024 22:05

This is terrifying to read my own dd was misdiagnosed with anorexia when she was later found to have ASD and ARFID. The approach to ARFID was totally different to the treatment for anorexia they kept saying ‘she meets the diagnostic criteria for anorexia so she must have that but she’s not presenting as we would expect but we will keep treating it as anorexia’ 🤦‍♀️

If someone has ARFID they will literally starve themselves unless allowed their safe foods

Whistleblow2024 · 27/07/2024 22:07

I cannot comment on the hospital because I have no idea but I do know that Arfid is really complicated and massively misunderstood. They will literally starve themselves even if they are hungry. There are issues with textures, contamination ect. My dc can eat the same food for months and then it will suddenly be disgusting or contaminated.
One of my dc has very similar needs to Megan and getting help is impossible. They are down to three safe foods currently and is constantly anemic.

We haven't even been able to get help from the dietician in our area.

Feelingemptybutgood · 27/07/2024 22:09

I think her mum did the right thing in preventing her being sectioned

Can I ask please what they recommended and if anything helped? We aren't getting anywhere at the moment and losing safe foods quickly...

It’s so difficult isn’t it my dd at one point would only eat such a tiny range of foods and it progressed to having to be one particular brand purchased at one particular shop only (that was ‘clean’) it was just awful.

Gingerkittykat · 27/07/2024 22:13

Yes, I had heard about Megan because I am a member of SWAn (Scottish Autistic Women's Network) and people on there have shared stories and videos. The videos on mum's facebook were harrowing as all Megan wants is to be with her mum, she has also been injured from restraints leaving a lot of bruising.

I didn't know the development that her Mum had taken her to England. I wonder if they will try and section her there too?

I can see her getting worse if she is sectioned being in an unfamiliar environment. Sadly there are a lot of autistic and people with learning disabilities placed in inappropriate placements for long periods of time.

I wish there was something I could do to help.

Once it was accepted that it wasn’t anorexia (which was hard) they offered us weekly sessions with a psychiatrist and a nurse. They never weighed dd again after that previously they had been doing it weekly and it was a huge problem.

They advised things like getting her to do baking for other members of the family , with the instructions that it wasn’t for her that she was baking for others (this was to just get her comfortable around food) , they asked us to take her food shopping with no expectation she purchased anything for herself unless she requested it and to make her food shopping sessions separate.

They talked a lot about safe foods, we slowly increased portion sizes they told us categorically do not suggest trying anything new. She was eating dry cereal for breakfast and plain GF pasta for lunch and dinner , after 2 weeks they asked us to try to introduce a small bowl of cereal after lunch for a week and then to do the same after dinner after another week.
They suggested a multivitamin and mineral supplement and basically persuaded her it was medication not food and she agreed to take it.
She refused the high calorie drinks they offered as she was strictly vegan (and GF and brand specific .

We were advised if she wanted to eat alone in her room that was also fine not to try and get her to join in family meals (but just to be vigilant in case food was hidden ).

It was horrendous for about 18 months then gradually got a lot better . She still only has a narrow range of foods she will eat (dry cereal one type only, plain GF pasta, soya milk, innocent smoothies, smooth soya yogurt, GF crackers and Granny Smith apples )

This is harrowing. Those bruises are horrific that poor poor child is being abused by professionals.

The withholding of safe foods is abhorrent

purpleme12 · 27/07/2024 23:01

There was that programme ages ago which revealed how sometimes people with autism etc can be put in the wrong places like this wasn't there?
And not treated how they should be?
There was definitely a programme about it, something like Dispatches. I remember watching it
