To ask GP for diazapam

MUCHtodoAboutSomething · 27/07/2024 15:01

For flying. I haven't been on an aeroplane in years. I have asked the GP for acouple for flying there, and back. The GP rang me up, gave me a huge condescending lecture on addiction, and made me feel like a cross between a naughty school girl, and a drug addict. I have been directed to website links. I go on holiday in a fortnight's time!

I have said there isn't meditation, or anything that can help. It is like when people go to the dentist and they're just scared. I'm not on other drugs, and haven't asked for anything before. I know they're addictive, but I'm not sure 2 or 3 tablets will cause me to have a drug problem. If I'm honest I doubt they'll take the edge off. I took more than this years ago for a car accident, and forgot about them, and found them in the back of the cupboard, I don't have an addictive personality. What are they even for, if they won't give them out at all?

Plenty of reasons not too… they’ve probably gone against prescribing advice if they’ve given you some for flying!

Not for an acute phobia. Being mildy nervous isn't a reason, I agree, but in my case, my fear of flying was prevennting me from doing my job. The valium got me onto the plane, the phobia reduced, and after that trip, which involved a LOT of flying, the fear was much less. I still don't like flying, but I can board a plane without having a panic attack now. If the OP has a similar level of fear, then it would be perfectly legitimate to prescribe valium.

MUCHtodo, thank you. DH phobias were caused by his m walking out, then homeless as a child. Ex wife cheating multiple times, homeless because of her. Being made redundant 5 times in 8 years. He's a sarf London boy, says hypnotherapy is a load of bollox. It did help him a lot....he didn't Finnish the course, unfortunately. Me im severely claustrophobic, and have been in 3 vehicle entrapments, none caused by me. If I'm not driving, I can't bear it! I take car travel sickness pills, the ones that make you drowsy,if we're going on a longish journey. About 5 years ago,DH said I'm done with anxiety. It doesn't always work. Last weekend we had a few friends round. A couple of days before,he will get a"dodgy gut", unable to sleep. It's only just getting slightly better now,10 days in! Obviously I don't know if these pills would be suitable for you.

@Nannyfannybanny

Oh I am so sorry, that must be really difficult to deal with for your dh, and you as well. It does sound like both you, and your dh, are doing incredibly well considering all you have been through. Car accidents can mess you up for years, the brain and mind take a long time to heal. IMO medical experts expect too much too soon from people, we all handle things differently as well; one size really doesn't fit all.
The fact you're both having friends over shows how amazingly strong you are, some people wouldn't push through, and would simply curl up in bed. It is a shame your dh didn't finish the hypnotherapy course. I think sometimes people give up when they have had alot of failed treatment in the past, I have a close relative who sadly felt he was beyond help; it was very sad.

My gp surgery says clearly they will not prescribe for flying on their website

i bought some from an online pharmacy

MUCHtodoAboutSomething · 29/07/2024 11:03

I have been reading up on alternative natural medications, instead of diazapam. Has anybody tried Valarian Root? If so, did it help your anxiety? Do you have a recommendation of a good one? I am looking online, and it is minefield of brands, and types. The pill form would be the most convenient for me, I just don't know which one!

No you arent being unreasonable

As an intelligent adult, it really should be your choice

No wonder people buy random crap of the internet

MUCHtodoAboutSomething · 29/07/2024 11:06

Thank you @TheShiningCarpet how did you know it was legit? I would be so scared it would be some weird concoction, or not as advertised.

Valerian, oat and hops do help with anxiety but not much - anxiety is a complete normal body response and ideally you need to tackle it at the root

i had awful anxiety due to menopause - I found a Sensate works very well but is an expensive investment. If anxiety is “just” flying, I would just buy some diazepam from an online pharmacy (but only if you have taken before with no side effects and you understand it is very addictive)

if wider life anxiety more stringent psychological and body work needs to be done

I had taken it before knew what the pills looked like plus it was clearly an online pharmacy with specific prescribing conditions as opposed to someone selling it. I felt it was worth a punt and when it arrived it was clear it was legit.

Wentie · 29/07/2024 11:09

@annamilo you may be a substance abuse nurse but you are not a Gp. You are giving incorrect, outdated advice that is also unprofessional. You really think it’s acceptable advice to say a ‘gp can mark it down for a different reason if it’s just a couple of tablets ‘ ?!

you have no idea what you’re talking about and what the prescribing guidelines are for this.

Thank you, do you have the name of where you went? If you're not comfortable to put it in the thread, could you kindly PM with it. I took it so long ago, I have no idea what they should look like. I will try valerian root first, I guess things have different effects on different people, and it might be worth I try. I just don't know which one!

Did they offer anything at all? Propranolol is good but you have to build it up or you did when I took it.

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 11:11

Of course you could try a private gp first

I can't take propranolol, which I had to remind the GP, it plummets my blood pressure. They are snowed under, so I find they never read your record.

Surely a private appointment would cost similar to a supply from an internet pharmacy? They have to be imported (I'd say), so there is a chance (if that's the case) of them being confiscated by Customs. If they are UK based, how is this legal, unless you have a prescription and therefore, round we go again? Just wondered.

Anyway OP, I'd just go for a private script and be done with all the hand wringing and analysis. The fee you pay will be worth it in spades.

On another note, what country are you going to? EU countries (and others) don't seem to have the same judgmental nanny state attitude as the NHS GPs WRT benzo prescribing. So you could treat yourself to a GP appointment and you will get your Benzos no problem. Then you can go on loads of airplanes (trying to cheer you up!).

Online pharmacy meds are dispensed in Ireland and sent over. I've just got a painkiller order to arrive tomorrow. I knew the GP wouldn't give me what I need and I would have had to go up there at 8 am then mess around trying to get my prescription when they don't answer the phone

Haha, thank you, I hope I can go on lots of planes without fear! I'm going to Spain (not staying in an air bnb thank goodness with the demonstrations atm). Would I just go to a pharmacy in Spain? I remember a long time ago doing this when I had a viral strep infection, and was shocked they gave me antibiotics on the spot.

Did you need a prescription or is it OTC? I'm not doubting you, but I'd say for an EU (Irish) online pharmacy you would need a script for benzos etc., as there are huge controls on pharma products within the EU. But I suppose there will be some.....

halava · 29/07/2024 12:17

@MUCHtodoAboutSomething You cannot get them OTC in the pharmacy anymore in Spain, and that includes antibiotics, although in the past you could. However..... it depends on the pharmacist in some places believe it or not! My DP went to a pharmacy in Southern Spain last year looking for a sleep aid, like the drowsy anti histamine. He didn't specifically ask for any particular product, but the pharmacist handed him ten Bromazepine (benzo) on the spot. Now DP is old like me lol, and had a hangdog expression, and he slept every night of the trip, thank God (for me lol). But I'd say that was a one off. No harm in trying though!

What I meant was, go to a GP in Spain and get a repeat script for say 6 per month or whatever. That script can then be used in UK (I think), but am not sure if it would come under the prescription system in UK. Anyway I'm not advocating drug misuse, but if you can get it legally in Spain, go for it!

Sorry, just because a group of GP’s don’t prescribe it for their reasons, not all GP’s are the same. Also, it depends what country you live in. Telling me I don’t know what I’m talking about is hilarious. I am assuming you are a GP yourself being that you are telling me I don’t know what I’ve taken nursing for c exams in a few countries to be able to qualify and have worked in different countries. Maybe get your facts right before

In France they used to be able to sell them but they can’t anymore unfortunately but they are prescribed a lot more for things like flying etc then the UK

Ask a different Dr. Mine happily gives me them when I (very often) have to go in the MRI machine.

Sorry just to add. I have a English and French doctorate in nursing and as a nursing practitioner I am able to prescribe and therefore know what can and cannot be prescribed and what for, you clearly don’t know

You are right, I know a number of patients that have to be sedated with either Valium or Midas plan in the MRI machine and we also prescribe it for dental surgery
