To say I loved the opening ceremony?

I really enjoyed the show last night! It was bold and ambitious and all
Encompassing! It was a shame about the rain, but I think overall it was really great! But shocked how many utter miserable responses to it there have been!

I'm shocked that people are still complaining that there were trans people performing and a cheeky scene that insinuated a threesome! Love, passion and style are all big French themes! Can we get past the British stiff upper lip and just enjoy it for what it is?

Remember, we had David (not holier than thou) Beckham driving a boat up the Thames and loads of weird and quirky things at our opening ceremony, that would have gone over the heads of most of the rest of the world.

Irish lass here, me and my children loved it. They didn't combust into smoke by knowing some people are in a 3 person relationship, my ten year old reckons its probably a good idea because then you always have someone to hang out with.

But on here there are people practically accusing it of being porn. Forget the pearl clutching its a level beyond.

The 16 year old wasn't threatened by the drag queens either. I loved the joy, the dance, the horse on the water was amazing. We were fighting over how many people where carrying the torch and we want a go on the pole things.

I felt it was beautifully elegant and reflective of french culture with humour. The outfits were eye-catching.

My absolute favourite, actually caught me off guard was Celine singing. I know my late mum would have loved it and would have been texting us about the "running" in the library 😁

Yes yes and yes!

RampantIvy · 27/07/2024 19:23

Anyway, does anyone care any more who wins the 1500m or the modern pentathlon or the race walking or the welly boot throwing?

Well yes, millions do.
What a silly question.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 27/07/2024 19:24

I suspect the fashion show / dancing / drag queen was originally intended to be a bit shorter but was expanded because of the weather. Not many other parts would let you build in slack to make up time if you were running late because the river was unexpectedly hard going.

Which part or parts am I wrong about?

That it's a laughing stock and people don't think it's a genuine competition.

Only oddballs on mumsnet think this.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 27/07/2024 19:24

If the whole thing gets cancelled in 20 years it'll be because of a world war and climate disaster.

You are joking, surely? You think anyone believes Olympic track and field, gymnastics, swimming, power events etc etc are genuine?

EasternStandard · 27/07/2024 19:28

ghostofadog · 27/07/2024 18:04

I felt embarrassed for them, it was pretty bad. Very trashy, amateurish. Most of the dancers were really poor, I can't believe they were the best France could come up with. As for the weird drag thing and the pervy smurf guy, I mean wtf? What have men dressed up as women got to do with the Olympics and the celebration of the incredible things humans can do? None of them looked like they could run for a bus. I did quite like the galloping horse though, and the light show. I got bored and turned off before the end so missed Celine and the balloon so maybe that would have changed my mind.

It was pretty bad. Celine did a good job at the end

Oh do bore off. If you're not interested in the Olympics, why post on an Olympics thread trying to mock and belittle people who are?

I'm also guessing that a) you don't know many sportspeople, or you'd know what laughable cobblers your 'theory' is, and b) you spend far too much time on the internet.

Yes, it's a 'very online' weird conspiracy theory

AlphabetBird · 27/07/2024 19:45

I liked it! It was very eurotrash in parts, I half expected Jean Paul Gautier to pop up, but it was bold and fun, and had some really beautiful moments. We’re off to Paris next week to see some events, and I can’t wait.

My friend is a former Olympian, went to 3 games, you’re talking shite

It’s not a need, it’s an observation. Isn’t comparison generally how people measure how much they enjoy a thing or event?

Yes, I do agree with you to an extent and feel this is generally the case. It just has seemed comparing it to 2012 has taken on a bit of an edge in some comments ( not yours)

Rummly · 27/07/2024 19:59

Oh FFS. It’s nothing to do with trans.

The athletes are all drug cheats. The Russians got caught out but all countries and sports are up to it. It’s probably marginally cleaner than professional cycling, I’ll give you that.

And no, I’m not a killjoy. I just don’t like industrialised cheating and swindling - swindling being the monopolies imposed on behalf of Olympic sponsors.

The ‘sports’! This Olympics includes artistic swimming, break dancing and skateboarding (whether or not demo sports). I also think diving and rhythmic gymnastics should be chucked out.

The whole thing’s a money-based joke.

Most people who aren’t conspiracy nuts do, yes. There are occasional worries about doping, but the competition itself? Nobody doubts that.

Merrilydancing · 27/07/2024 20:07

The opening ceremony should be a celebration of the athletes and the host country and this was neither.

Having the athletes in a stadium with the crowd cheering gives them their moment to enjoy after the sacrifices made just to get there. A stadium gives a collective that the boats on the seine didn’t have.

As for the drag queens, so 2020 and Sydney did it better.

Rummly · 27/07/2024 20:08

Wendycoping · 27/07/2024 20:03

That’s kind, though unnecessary.

I only ask that you find out a bit more about the Olympics.

I also hope - genuinely - that you enjoy it. World events and shows don’t have to be perfect, or even half decent, to be spectacular.

I don't understand about the ban on netball though. So I'll go with you on that

A) he didn’t ’get his knobout’. If it were his knob it’s clearly not intentional.
B) it’s not his knob. Look properly. It’s a hole in his tights. You are seeing slightly bulgy thigh.

Clearly a hole in his tights

I mean, if it is a testicle, he wants to see a doctor as a matter of urgency.
