Is it weird to ask for the same surgeon for 2nd c section?

Pregnant with no.2

Really lucked out on my first C-section. Surgeon was a lady doctor with skill of a seamstress meets da Vinci. Her surgery-ing was a work of art and at one point I even asked MN whether I should send a photo as years on it still does impress me that much on a daily basis 🤣

Just had my booking in and said I was keeping my fingers crossed I would get the same surgeon. She said you can ask! 😱

This is my dream come true!

Is this common, or weird to ask. And would a surgeon be likely to say yes?

Thank you to any out there who knows about this stuff.

Yes as she may be off duty or off sick.

shoofly · 26/07/2024 20:31

It wouldn't have occurred to me that you could ask, but if you were told you can then you might as well. Presumably it'll not do any harm.

ohmysense · 26/07/2024 20:34

I think it’s totally fine to want to be under the care of a doctor you already know is good, nothing weird at all. Just be mindful things can change very last minute and she may need to deal with another emergency or something so you might get someone else on the day.

Cryingatthegym · 26/07/2024 20:35

I felt like that after my first c section. She did a wonderful job. Had no idea you could ask for the same surgeon, but I don't think it would be weird to ask.

As an aside, all 3 of mine were done by female surgeons and all 3 have been very neat.

Gowlett · 26/07/2024 20:35

I would ask. I had brilliant doctors during EMCS, who called it quickly. But the sewing job is terrible… I have a shocking scar, which still looks as bad as the day DS was born. Luckily, I’m not a young woman so I’m not lamenting my bikini body!

Yes this is the thing isn’t it! I could get my hopes up and then nope.

But I suppose then at least I tried and it just wasn’t meant to be.

I am just so surprised that you can ask. It never occurred to me either!

Definitely ask. As long as your heart’s not set on it, it can’t do any harm.

Yes as she may be off duty or off sick.

You think it'd be unreasonable to ask because the answer might be no? Confused

i would ask if I were you. Nothing to lose in this situation!

My consultant surgeon conducted my first c section and I asked her if she would also be my consultant for my second section. She was very happy to be asked. I emailed her directly soon after finding out I was pregnant again.

That's lovely. What greater compliment could you pay!

chloechloe · 26/07/2024 20:54

No harm in asking, I hope it works out!

I had two amazing female Ob-gyns when DD1 was born and my scar is so flat and neat and barely noticeable. I’m sure they take more care than male surgeons.

I spotted one of them at the local swimming pool a few years later and had to go over and tell her how grateful I was that she looked after me so well!

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 26/07/2024 20:58

I did not know you could do this! I had a fabulous female surgeon for my 2nd CS who even cut off some excess skin before leaving the neatest scar.
For my 3rd I had a male surgeon who pulled a face at my birth plan requesting staples were not used.

JustCantBeBothered · 26/07/2024 20:59

I got the same! First baby was emergency c section, very unpleasant experience after failed attempt at vaginal birth - left with poor scar. Second baby I was in bits at having to have an elective (trauma). Met the surgeon at 25 weeks and he put me right at ease, told me I'd done the right thing etc (after two years of truly punishing myself after the failed birth). It went so smoothly, like black and white compared to first birth and he left me with a tiny pencil scar after neatening up the mess of the emergency one. Third baby I was again needing an elective and lo and behold their was my surgeon 🥰 my husband and I instantly relaxed as we went into the prep room. He was brilliant. 3 beautiful babies and as smooth and experience I could have had after the first. I owe him a lot, for my mental health.

Go for it!!

zzar45 · 26/07/2024 21:01

Never occurred to me either but worth a try! As long as you accept she might not be available on the day.

My first scar was so perfect and neat I remember thinking I hope this isn’t wasted on a first pregnancy and then it’s bodged during a second section!

SameSurgeon · 26/07/2024 21:07

Yes this exactly! I feel like I have been too lucky and I will have likely used all my luck up. So exciting that asking for same seems to be a ‘thing’ (even if little known).

And so nice to hear all these stories of people with great surgeons/ same surgeons and that the gratefulness feeling I feel so often is not weird. It makes me happy but then I also feel weird as I’m like this woman’s ultra super fan and she doesn’t know it 🤣 I wonder how many super fans she has?!

I hope some c section surgeons out there get to read this thread at some point and see how happy they make people. Threads are more often about things not going well so it’s nice to talk about positive and praise their incredible skills.

@SameSurgeon if it makes you feel better I had a second emergency section and still had a great second scar!
At first I thought it wasn’t as good, but I think my mind was comparing a 2 year healed scar to a fresh one. Now it’s fully healed, flattened out and faded it looks great.

To be honest I think most surgery scars are nice and neat these days!
I think some of the scar fear with sections is based on how they were done in the past.

Delia88 · 26/07/2024 21:22

Not unreasonable at all.

I requested the same anaethetist I had seen before and got her.

Bear in mind however that the best laid plans can go awry so you might not actually get them on the day!

dbeuowlxb173939 · 26/07/2024 21:23

No harm in asking but they won't be able to guarantee you get them

SockPuppet · 26/07/2024 21:24

My second two of three c sections were done by the same surgeon. I was so grateful because she pretty much saved my daughter’s life (second c section). Afterwards I thought she looked familiar. I eventually realised we had been at school together in a totally different area of the country!
I will always be grateful to her.
