In our área we have 2 young lasds who are providing a service . They don't go inside people's homes, they are outside. They travel around on bikes with all their equipment.
They are earning their own money and working too.
Parents must be so proud.
AiBU to think mote teenagers could be like this in the holidays and weekends etc.
So much better than saying your bored and asking for money all the time from your parents.
A great story about teenagers. Some good press.

👏

These are changing a fair wage for themselves. They've made themselves a nifty little Facebook Page with pics and prices

There wouldn't be much demand for the sorts of things I'm thinking here. People have proper gardeners etc if they don't want to do jobs themselves. I wouldn't let a teen near my car to clean it. There have been kids who have tried similar but no one is interested.

I've noticed on local FB groups that any proactive teenagers asking to do jobs for people, like dog walking, shopping for elderly and baby sitting are immediately asked if they are licenced by the council/DBS checked etc and shut down. I feel like people were a lot more trusting when I was a teenager which was a fair while ago! Probably because communities aren't as close anymore maybe so people don't necessarily know people's kids on a personal level anymore.

It used to be that you could start working at 13. Nowadays it’s 16 for most jobs (even volunteering) I get it from a safeguarding perspective but I’m not sure if on balance it’s helped our teens. By the time most can work they are deep in to GCSEs and then A levels. In the old days when they could get settled into working at a younger age it was easier to work the exams round an existing job.

it’s only goi g to be the few enterprising and confident teens like the one in the example that will stand out. And as you say even jobs like dog walking are being taken by adults now.

They are really growing by word of month and reviews.

Even adults who did this as a business are praising them, not nasty at all.

Lots of people can do things but it's doing it well that Counts.
The image, the advertising, the politeness of the teenagers all helps.

What's your skin in the game OP? Are these teens anything to do with you? Hoping to bump up interest in their work?

My teenagers are lovely and don't complain about being bored or nag me for money. Why do you think most teenagers aren't similar?

ShinySteel · 26/07/2024 17:39

My teenagers work, most of their friends have jobs too.

It's good for them and gives them financial independence.

Same.

I don't get the rush to get kids out working. I like mine to enjoy the summers, out doing stuff with friends and relaxing.

I think teenagers get a bad rep nowadays (,worse than in the past,) because if the behaviour of some. It's nice to see them trying to earn an honest penny. Growing up in a popular seaside town, me and most of my friends had jobs in the tourist industry, from the age of about 13. Usually washing-up or chambermaiding in the hotels and guesthouses, ice cream kiosks, cafes etc. The school kids basically kept all the businesses going through the holiday season. Probably not massively legal but back in the 70s a blind eye was often turned
and of course no social media busybodies with smartphones snapping pics of anything that just might be slightly illegal. All the kids were minted in summer with all the money we earned😁😁

I've just been listening to Jamie Laing talking to Ali Abdaal, who trained as a doctor and is a very successful entrepreneur. He was saying he didn't grow up with a father and that if he had, his childhood would have been far more financially stable and he would have been far less likely to be an entrepreneur now. I think schools should really encourage entrepreneurship - those kids who bring sweets into school to sell them and so on could be redirected into other areas (like the boys you're talking about) rather than just having detentions instead.

Hopefully earning enough to replace the bikes when they are inevitaby stolen.

This happens on my local fb group too

It's usually from actual professionals in the area - eg a young lad posted to ask if anyone wanted lawn mowing done at £10 a pop, and things like weeding etc. and all the local professional gardeners were over it like a rash. I can understand they don't like being undercut, but it's a bit mean really.

Inevitably the young people who post get entirely put off and don't bother again.

I had two 11yr old boys with buckets, soap and sponges wanting to clean my car yesterday I was so impressed, how could I say no. Never had that before.

TruthorDie · 26/07/2024 18:25

Good on them. There are some boys near me doing car washing

Bloody hell. Some people seem to permanently walk under a grey rain cloud.

Gloooooop · 26/07/2024 18:32

One of my daughters babysat so much she saved nearly £3,000 before going to uni. Her main employers lived over the road with two nice kids who were no trouble. Extra bonus was that she used the time once she put the kids to bed to do homework or revision. She felt like she was being paid to study.

I think that's an appearing part of what they are doing too. Going round on bikes with their stuff.

Doubt they will get stolen as they will always be with them. They won't be left anywhere.

Can't let stop you anyway. Anything can get stolen at any time.
