To think company is taking liberties with this supposed 'payment in arrears'

A close friend recently started a new job in a small company. The job started in the last few days of June so she knew she wouldn't get paid until the next payday. However, payday has come and now she's only gotten paid for her work done in June. She's asked her boss and he said it's in the contract that she'll get paid 30 days in arrears (it's not) and she'll get paid for the work done in July at the end of August.

Her contract actually says she'll be paid in arrears which to me means she should be getting paid June & July's work this payday. I'm assuming this is how the company pays the other 6 or so employees so they may not be able to change this system, but is this normal? ID friend being shafted? I've told her to look for another job ASAP but open to other opinions.

What date is payday and what date did she start?

strivingtosucceed · 26/07/2024 12:17

She started on 25th June and payday is 26th of the month.

So her boss has misunderstood her contract and she goes back to him, or payroll.

I agree with you OP, at the end of the month you get paid for the month just completed. So at the end of July she should be paid for July's work.

There's no payroll, i think it's outsourced, but she will be speaking to someone else who can give more insight.

My thoughts exactly, does she have any recourse if they come back and confirm what her boss said?

I honestly don’t know. Seems a strange way to pay people but others could come along and say that’s how they are paid.

She needs to speak to ACAS who can put something together for her to pass to the boss,

being paid in arras is normal - as in she's not being paid the 1st July for work in July, she's being paid the end of July for work carried out IN July.
