To think there is nowhere within commutable distance to London that I want to live?

Any advice greatly appreciated; if you commute to London, where do you live and what is it like? I have seen some less than desirable areas and don't want to make a mistake. I'm sure there are fabulous places, I just don't know them.

Must be within commuting distance to London Bridge/Victoria.

Guildford is a lovely market town. About 45 mins to Waterloo. Good schools and a nice place to bring up kids on the whole. Or further up A3 to Weybridge or Kingston.

Bishops stortford, hertford, ware and surrounding vilages. All beautiful and very commutable. Great schools, restaurants etc etc. lovely countryside, 40 mins into London.

For a more affordable option look at knebworth or for a very affordable option Stevenage. Old town Stevenage has a touch of the upper st about it if you narrow your eyes a bit, the houses are nice Victorian/edwardian stock, the train is half an hour into King's Cross. See also Aston, Bradbury End, Knebworth. They are building new build flats and houses like mad if that's your vibe.

Some bits of Welwyn Garden city.

Further out on same line baldock and Royston.

Like a PP I'd suggest you look for somewhere you can afford as close as possible to London. Then you can just come in as you want and enjoy the real thing.

We love on Zone 4 suburbia and have plenty of wanky coffee shops. Not arty, more upright 4x4 drivers. Occasionally I need a London fix and go up to a poncey restaurant etc. It's nice. But not important on a day to day basis.

Can I ask where you live?
