My 7 yr old DD has the dreaded chicken pox ( she’s on day 5) but still absolutely covered. Half of his class are out cos of this

Tomorrow is my DS’s year 6 graduation and there is no one I can call to babysit ( that’s even if they would want to )

I can’t take her there as I would be exposing other kids but at the same time how can I miss my sons grad?

im torn . I plan to be on video call with her while there and the school is just down the road , a 2 min walk

not sure what I can do ?

can she go to a classmates house that also has chickenpox as you mentioned half the class have it.

Mumofthreeteenagers · 25/07/2024 19:23

Please tell me this is a hoax!

mitogoshi · 25/07/2024 19:25

I host the leavers assembly for our local church school (in my church) and only about 1/4 of the parents attended. Please don't beat yourselves up if you can't make them. And to be honest, nothing happened, hymns sung, a book given, told to have a lovely summer.

Sunshineclouds11 · 25/07/2024 19:39

She went.

Try Bubble for a babysitter. Just make it clear she has chickenpox.

Thanks all

just called the school and they said they will watch her for me in another room while I come to the leavers assembly

Just popped back to see if you made it, so glad a good solution found 🙂

Marmunia10667 · 25/07/2024 19:51

This is not a question I would even contemplate asking.

KatiesMumWoof · 25/07/2024 19:56

@confusedwithschool

how did it all go?

mamaandbabas · 25/07/2024 19:59

I thought that after 5 days, virus is not infectious?? If so can you just cover your child in Chamoline lotion to help with the itching and take her with you to the graduation?

wasdarknowblond · 25/07/2024 20:11

Wouldn't you be breaking the law?

Hello thanks for checking in.

I took her and we stayed outside the assembly hall. She is not infectious anymore as it is now 7 days . But we left after 30mins because she was still a little bit fatigued.

I have a son the same age who just had his leavers prom and assembly. I would have been gutted to have missed it and I know he would have been too. Glad the school
are helping you to meet both kids needs. Enjoy x

When my son had CP our doctor told us they are infectious until every scab is gone.

Teenie22 · 25/07/2024 20:33

Not sure they’d still be infective on day 5?

albatrossjoe · 25/07/2024 20:38

Personally I wouldn't. In general, but especially if they're unwell and not used to being alone. In the UK there's no minimum legal age, but Gov website states its recommendation is that most children under 12 wouldn't be mature enough to be left home unsupervised.

Sorry though OP, that's a rubbish situation to be in. X

MumToATallOne · 25/07/2024 21:00

Can you send a friend or relative along to be at the event for your DS if he really wants someone to be there at the event for him?

GrannyRose15 · 25/07/2024 21:01

sshh don’t tell anyone rush in and out and if anyone aske say you have a babysitter. Put her in front of the telly and she’ll be fine for a one off. Certainly wouldn’t do it on a regular basis.
By the way you graduate when you get a degree after three or four years of university study. I detest this dumbing down if my achievemenrs by applying the term to 11 year olds.

elenna55 · 25/07/2024 21:28

K0OLA1D · 24/07/2024 13:24

I was thinking 11 was a bit ott. Mine have been left from 10 alone completely for small amounts of time and now they're 10 and almost 13 they stay in all day some days in the holidays while we go to work!!

Officially you cannot leave a child under the age of 12 alone, for longer periods of time, if anything happens in your absence you would be persecuted for child neglect. The law on leaving your child on their own - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

it is Really interesting to see people getting hungover about what a child leaving Primary school is called . Whether it is called graduation, leavers assembly, it is a very huge milestone for my child and for we as parents.

thank you so much to everyone who offered kind suggestions and made me wake up my tired brain from sleepless nights to think of other alternatives. She would stay with a TA who is available as all other teachers and students would be at the assembly

"Hungover" 😂

This is terrible, terrible advice.

Also, your spelling errors and lack of punctuation are doing a great job of dumbing down your 'achievemenrs'. The 11 year olds in my class can write a lot better than you!

No, you'd be breaking the law if you had left your 7 year old at home alone.

speyside · 25/07/2024 22:04

they normally have live videos now so you can see it and celebrate together later
dont risk it remember madeleine mccann

30 minutes is a very short period of time.
